Match Review
: Merstham’s last game of the season saw them take on Champions elect Metropolitan Police hoping to spoil their party. Merstham had the better of the opening exchanges but with a combination of Met Police’s determination and some atrocious refereeing decisions Merstham went behind on the hour when Police were given a contentious free kick which Chris O’Flaherty then moved forward at least ten yards and placed the resultant kick past the outstretched Ian Chatfield into the Merstham goal. Merstham fought hard for an equaliser and had a few chances but all to no avail. With Chatham Town holding Bogor Regis to a surprise draw it was Met Police who finished Champions and will play next season in the Premier League. Congratulations to them - Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy

Merstham fought valiantly but suffered a narrow defeat in their final game of the season with opponents Metropolitan Police gaining promotion into the Ryman Premier as Champions. Chris O’Flaherty’s controversial second half free-kick proved to be decisive against the Moatsiders who edged the contest but finished the game with ten men after Adam Broomhead was sent off in the closing stages. It was straightforward for Met Police who knew they had to win and hope Bognor Regis Town dropped points against Chatham Town to secure the championship. However, Merstham needed to end the season on a positive note after a disastrous week which included a crushing defeat to local rivals Chipstead and the league imposing a one point deduction for fielding an ineligible player.

Harry Ottaway, Dan Harding and Sean Rivers all started upfront as the Moatsiders looked to pile the pressure on the hosts who looked nervous during the early exchanges. Omar Folkes watched his sixth minute deflected effort trickle towards goal but Met Police goalkeeper Mo Maan somehow managed to change direction and clear the ball away from danger before the ball crept into the net. Maan was finally beaten on 22 minutes when Broomhead headed Adam Moriarty’s corner at the far post but once again the hosts fortuitously survived as a defender diverted the effort off the line onto the post and away from goal. The home side created their best chance two minutes later when Eddie Smith sliced his volley wide of the target as Merstham continued to hustle their opponents in possession.

Met Police came out rejuvenated in the second half, buoyed on by the news of Chatham holding Bognor Regis at half-time, with the hosts looking their most threatening from set-pieces. Smith’s fierce low effort from O’Flaherty’s free-kick five minutes after the restart deflected just wide of the near post and two minutes later another O’Flaherty free-kick just evaded three players running in unmarked at the back post. Merstham had chances of their own as Broomhead diverted Fabio Savaira’s corner over the bar and Rivers drove a low 25-yard free-kick straight at Maan. The game controversially turned on 66 minutes when the assistant referee awarded Met Police a free-kick for a soft challenge on the right wing. O'Flaherty swept the free-kick from 25 yards over Ian Chatfield into the far corner to the relief of the players who swarmed the dugout in celebration. The Moatsiders pushed forward in search of an equaliser but with five minutes remaining Broomhead was shown a red card while arguing with the referee just before the taking of a Merstham free-kick. Carl Wilson-Dennis should have wrapped up victory late on for Met Police when the striker raced through Merstham’s defence but he blazed his effort over the bar. At the other end, the Moatsiders almost spoiled the party in the final minute of injury time when Michael Corbett’s long throw caused chaos inside the penalty area but Dean Gunner could only prod his effort wide from six yards. Met Police waited anxiously for a couple of minutes after the final whistle for Bognor’s result but ecstasy soon swept the pitch as they could finally celebrate becoming Ryman League Division One South champions.

Match Review
: The last home game of the season and the fans were hoping to celebrate Easter with three points knowing a point deduction was in the pipeline. But this was not to be and they left the Moatside feeling disappointed by a below par performance and the fact they just could not find the back of the net. Chipstead were clearly a notch above Merstham and deserved their win. Surprisingly Andy Martin only named three subs limiting his options especially after playing two games in three days both of which were unseasonably hot. - Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy

Merstham slumped to another defeat after a lacklustre performance against local rivals Chipstead in their final home game of the season. Chipstead claimed the bragging rights with two goals in each half and will now finish the season above The Moatsiders in the league although home fans will be more upset at the manner of the defeat rather than the score line.

Merstham started brightly as Ryan Watts broke forward in the second minute and drove a low left-footed effort straight at goalkeeper Martin Grant. The visitors grew stronger as the half progressed and took the lead with their first attack on 19 minutes as Billy Harding’s effort deflected off Michael Corbett to give the visitors a fortuitous lead. The Moatsiders looked lethargic in possession with too many long balls going astray whereas Chipstead started to overpower their opponents in midfield and should have doubled their advantage after 38 minutes. Ian Chatfield’s poor clearance fell straight to Harding but fortunately Corbett managed to track back and block the striker’s effort away for a corner. However, Merstham switched off from the resulting Alex Wilks corner as an unmarked Harding at the back post fired his volley back across goal for Ray Freeman to tap home from close range.

Chipstead continued their dominance in the second half and put the game beyond doubt nine minutes after the restart. Freeman’s scintillating pace on the left wing took him past Dean Gunner into the penalty area and he slid the ball across for Wilks to convert from six yards. The Moatsiders showed some signs of a fightback on the hour mark when substitute Sean Rivers instantly controlled Ottaway’s high ball inside the area but he dragged a low right-footed effort inches wide of the far post. Two minutes later, Grant needed to be on his toes to tip a Rivers header over the bar following Gareth Graham’s free-kick. Chipstead added a fourth in the final five minutes as AJ Morrison superbly curled a 20-yard effort into the far corner but with only four wins at the Moatside all season home fans will be hoping for better times next term.

Match Review: Neither team were able to produce a winner in this evenly matched game between two mid table sides.  Both goals came early on, Merstham taking the lead in the third minute when Dan Harding’s precise lob left the Blues keeper, Matt Pegler rooted to the spot.  Fleet fought back strongly and squared things just before the half-hour when Chris Page’s fine cross was headed home by Johnnie Dyer. Both teams had several chances in the second half with both keepers making important saves but neither team could break the deadlock
- Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy

Merstham continued their recent good form after a battling draw in the scorching heat against Fleet Town.

With both sides safe from relegation, the fixture had little importance but the Moatsiders showed their desire from the outset scoring inside the opening three minutes. Harry Ottaway flicked on Ian Chatfield’s goal kick towards Dan Harding and the striker cleverly looped the ball over an advancing Matt Pegler into an empty net to give Merstham an early lead. Merstham had opportunities to double their lead but they failed to test Pegler. Harding sliced his eighth minute volley wide from Michael Corbett’s long throw and four minutes later Dean Gunner’s ferocious 25-yard goal bound effort deflected off the back of Ottaway’s head. Fleet grew stronger as the half progressed and the hosts equalised with their first effort on-target after 28 minutes as Johnnie Dyer glanced home Chris Page’s pinpoint cross.

The home side drove forward in the second half as Darren Campbell fired a dangerous effort inches over the crossbar three minutes after the restart.  Moments later, Dyer skilfully turned on the edge of the area to deceive Merstham’s defence and tried to find the corner but the effort drifted just wide of the target. Both teams looked exhausted in the later stages although Merstham kept pushing forward and they could have snatched a late victory. Sean Rivers burst through on-goal with ten minutes remaining after Fleet defender Marc Vockins slipped but the striker rushed his shot and blazed his first-time effort over the bar. The Moatsiders created an even better chance as Ottaway raced through Fleet’s defence on the stroke of injury time. Merstham’s top scorer tried to lift the ball over Pegler but unfortunately he could not get enough elevation on the effort and the keeper comfortably caught the ball to keep the scores level.

Match Review: The result somewhat flatters promotion chasing Whitehawk who were matched by Merstham on many occasions with the only real difference being that the Hawks put away their chances and Merstham just couldn’t. With four goals on the day Whitehawk took their impressive league scoring tally to 99 and incredible 40 more than the Moatsiders. Merstham can be proud of their performance albeit a little shaky in defence however with Dulwich Hamlet’s 5-3 win over Chatham Town Merstham can now look forward to another season in the Ryman League. - Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy

Merstham’s recent revival came to a crashing end as Whitehawk illustrated their promotion aspirations with a clinical display in front of goal. Caretaker Manager Andy Martin set The Moatsiders a challenge to remain unbeaten until the end of the season and they bounced back after an early setback as Dan Harding cancelled out Sam Gargan’s opener. Ben Godfrey restored Whitehawk’s lead before the interval and second half strikes from Gargan and Pat Harding gave the visitors a well-deserved victory.

In a frenetic first half, Merstham started with the same intensity they had shown following their late victory over Burgess Hill Town. Harry Ottaway put the home fans on their feet in the fourth minute when the striker superbly lifted the ball over defender Marc Pullen’s head but unfortunately he fired his 20-yard volley over the crossbar. Whitehawk grew into the match and managed to take the lead after 17 minutes when Gargan headed home a pinpoint Jeryl Hughes cross. However, their lead lasted less than four minutes as Adam Moriarty’s clever pass sent Dan Harding through on-goal and the striker drove a low left-footed effort across Lloyd Anderson into the bottom corner. Merstham should have taken the lead on 24 minutes when Ottaway flicked on Michael Corbett’s long throw but Bradley Duke somehow managed to head the ball over the bar from less than six yards with the goal at his mercy. This proved to be pivotal as Whitehawk regained the lead seven minutes before the interval as Merstham failed to clear Stuart Tuck’s free-kick and Ben Godfrey managed to blast a ferocious effort past Ian Chatfield.

Merstham again started the second half the better of the two teams with Corbett’s long throw causing more chaos inside Whitehawk’s defence as Sam Fisk needed to hook Dean Gunner’s effort away before it trickled into the net. Then disaster struck five minutes after the restart as Whitehawk were gifted a penalty after Ottaway handled inside the area while trying to head clear a Hughes corner. Gargan dispatched the spot kick into the bottom right corner to give the Moatsiders a mountain to climb. The visitors with their two-goal advantage dictated the pace for the remainder of the game but to their credit Merstham never gave up as Dan Harding and Gunner both hit the woodwork in the closing stages. Whitehawk added a fourth in the final minute of the ninety while on the counter as Godfrey went round Chatfield and squared the ball across for Pat Harding to tap home to take their scoring tally to 99 for the season.

Merstham fans may not look back at the game with any affection but they will be encouraged to see their team create chances against a side pushing for promotion and with Chatham Town losing they can look forward to another season in the Ryman League.

Match Review: You could forgive me if I skipped to the final three minutes of this game (the exercise would do me good) where the game was won and lost and emotions ran high. In the final minute of normal time substitute Fabio Savaira popped up and put Merstham into the lead to the exaltation of their fans who were convinced to a man that Merstham had pulled off a fantastic win against their high flying opponents. So you can imagine their dismay when straight from the restart Danny Curd levelled for the home side instantly wiping the smiles off the Merstham players and fans faces. But this was a new Merstham, a Merstham that wouldn’t lie down, and in the second minute of added on time Merstham dealt a crushing blow to the promotion chasing Hillians when Leon McDowell restored the Moatsiders lead to the jubilation of their fans. For the first time this season the Merstham team were warmly clapped off the field and was that a wry smile seen on the face of Manager Andy Martin as he acknowledged the applause?. - Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy

Leon McDowell scored in the dying seconds as Merstham incredibly snatched a late victory against Burgess Hill Town with all three goals coming in second half injury-time. Fabio Saraiva edged Merstham ahead on the stroke of 90 minutes before Danny Curd equalised in the third minute of stoppage time in what most people believed to be the final kick of the game. Then, less than 60 seconds later, Harry Ottaway took the ball around goalkeeper Tom Betts and squared the ball across to McDowell for the winner to put any fear of relegation for the Moatsiders into the distant memory.

For all the late drama, Burgess Hill could have taken the lead twice in the opening ten minutes. Ian Chatfield superbly turned a powerful Danny Gainsford header round the post at full stretch from Sam Tucknott’s free-kick. From the resulting Tucknott deep corner, Lloyd Cotton’s header back across goal ensured a goalmouth scramble around the six-yard box with Michael Corbett eventually clearing the ball off the line. Burgess Hill managed to dictate the game in the first half and created the better chances. Cotton’s pinpoint pass put Curd through on-goal after 28 minutes but the striker dragged his low effort wide of the far post. Then, Neil Watts managed to get in front of Bradley Duke but could only head Cotton’s dangerous first-time cross over the bar as the hosts failed to find the breakthrough before the interval.

Merstham battled back in the second half personified by Harry Ottaway’s work rate and determination to link-up play from the long balls the team delivered up to the striker. Ottaway almost scored on 69 minutes after striking a 25-yard effort with the outside of his right boot but the shot was always curling away of the far post. Ten minutes later, Ottaway cut inside from the left wing and unleashed a ferocious drive from the edge of the area which Betts almost split into the goal. Burgess Hill looked dangerous on the counter and when Tucknott managed to turn past Adam Broomhead on 72 minutes it looked as though the striker just needed to roll the ball past Chatfield but fortunately for the visitors his low effort drifted the wrong side of the post. All the magic happened shortly after the fourth official announced the three minutes of injury time. Burgess Hill defender Tom Parkinson mistimed his headed clearance following Ottaway’s dangerous cross towards the back post and allowed Saraiva to head the ball home from eight yards for the lead. The hosts had a penalty appeal turned down after Tucknott’s cross struck Chris Head on the arm from point-blank range before deflecting out of play. Merstham failed to clear their lines from the resulting corner and Danny Curd managed to scramble home the equaliser to the relief of the Burgess Hill fans. However, their joy was short-lived as McDowell grabbed the winner having been on the field less than five minutes with the travelling fans staying to celebrate and congratulate the players as they came off the pitch.

Match Review: Merstham won their second game this year by doing the double over Godalming Town to the rapturous applause of their fans as they edged closer to safety. Harry Ottaway notched up his 17th goal of the season; although the jury is still out on a goal awarded to Dean Gunner in Tuesday’s draw against W&H. It was a scoreline that rather flattered the visitors as Merstham missed several clear cut chances. All round it was another good performance and with some very difficult games ahead it was just the boost the team and Manager needed. - Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy

Merstham recorded their first home victory in over five months against Godalming Town to help ease their relegation fears. Harry Ottaway’s solitary first-half strike finally gave Andy Martin his first win as Caretaker Manager in his tenth game in charge to lift The Moatsiders eight points clear of second-bottom Chatham Town with five games remaining. Merstham welcomed back fan favourite Craig Vernon to The Moatside who despite playing for the club for the majority of the season is playing against them for the second time after beginning the season with Horsham YMCA.

There was little action in the first half with both teams struggling with their form in recent weeks but it was Merstham who took the initiative after 21 minutes. Dan Harding looped the ball over Vernon’s head to put Ottaway through on-goal and the striker superbly lifted his effort over goalkeeper James Norris into an empty net. Godalming started to edge back into the contest towards the end of the half after a case of mistaken identity as Merstham’s Adam Broomhead was booked despite Michael Corbett making the challenge on Gabriel Odunaike. From the resulting free-kick, James Evans floated the ball towards Adam Foulser at the back post but he headed the ball over the bar. Then, Odunaike failed to connect with Rishi Nankani’s cross in injury time when he only needed to head the ball home from six yards.

Both teams created opportunities early in the second half as Dean Gunner volleyed over the bar for Merstham from Corbett’s long throw. While at the other end, Ian Chatfield parried Matt Powell’s powerful 30-yard effort to Damian Smith who put the rebound into the side netting from an acute angle. The Moatsiders thought they had doubled their advantage on 66 minutes when substitute Sean Rivers had the ball in the net but the linesman adjudged the striker had strayed offside after Norris parried Gunner’s fierce low effort. Moments later, Harding blazed Ottaway’s low cross over the bar from less than six yards with the goal gaping at his mercy. Godalming had a chance to equalise in the final ten minutes after James Hennessy drove past Broomhead into the penalty area and lifted an effort over Chatfield but Corbett superbly managed to track back and head the ball off the line. Vernon was booked in the final few minutes after a challenge on Ottaway much to the delight of the home fans. The former Moatside favourite was in good spirit throughout the game and regularly smiled at the home fans jeers but laughter soon turned to concern around the ground after Hennessy had to be stretchered off after an innocuous challenge on the touchline. With Godalming down to ten men, having used all their substitutions, Merstham should have put the game beyond doubt in injury time when Omar Folkes raced through the visitors defence with Adam Moriarty in close support. Moriarty unbelievably decided to stop his run as Folkes approached the penalty area and when the midfielder squared the ball across the box, with Norris fast approaching, there was no one there to convert the easy chance. Fortunately, the missed opportunity had no bearing on the final result and for the first time since the end of October, Merstham fans could finally celebrate the jubilation of a home victory.

Match Review: Merstham came away from this game not only with their first point for a month but with a morale boosting performance that bodes well for the future. Being the underdogs it came as no real surprise to the home fans that Merstham went behind after twenty minutes through a Bakary Bojang goal. But this was a smarter looking Merstham side that took up the challenge so it was quite a setback when the Swans doubled their lead less than ten minutes into the second half. Yet again Merstham rallied and this time it paid off as Dean Gunner snatched one back. Instantly the Merstham faithful, and I do mean faithful, got behind their side in a way that had been missing for sometime at Moatside. Twenty minutes later leading scorer Harry Ottaway knocked in his 12th league goal of the season to earn Merstham a well deserved point. - Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy

Merstham produced a sensational fightback from two goals down to rescue a point against play-off chasing Walton and Hersham. Bakary Bojang and Reis Stanislaus left Merstham facing a two-goal deficit for the third consecutive match. However, this time The Moatsiders showed plenty of passion and determination to turn the game on its head with goals from Dean Gunner and Harry Ottaway in eleven second half minutes.

There was little action in an uninspiring first half as Merstham continuously deployed a long ball game and failed to grasp any momentum in the match. Walton managed to gain the upper hand and took the lead after 21 minutes as Ian Chatfield dropped Richard Taylor’s long punt up-field straight to the feet of Bojang who prodded the ball home from close range.

The second half begun in similar fashion to the first with Merstham chasing Walton shadows and the visitors unsurprisingly doubled their advantage on 52 minutes. Stanislaus chased down a long ball over the top of Merstham’s defence and took the ball around Ian Chatfield before squeezing an effort through the legs of defender Chris Head inside the near post. Walton should have put the game beyond doubt on the hour as Bojang raced through and lifted the ball over the oncoming Chatfield but fortunately for Merstham the effort clipped the top of the crossbar before going over. The Moatsiders capitalised on their lucky escape displaying the fighting qualities that has been lacking in recent weeks as they started their comeback six minutes later. Adam Moriarty’s 25-yard goal bound effort deflected off a Walton defender and looped into the penalty area. Goalkeeper Gareth Williams came to collect the ball but fumbled under pressure and Merstham somehow managed to scramble home the rebound with Gunner credited with the final touch. The home side, now in the ascendancy, probed for an equaliser but Omar Folkes and Dan Harding both crashed efforts against the post as it looked destined to be one of those unlucky nights for The Moatsiders. Merstham brought on Sean Rivers as an extra striker and the change had an immediate effect on 77 minutes. Ottaway found space inside Walton’s penalty area and the striker guided the ball underneath Williams to spark rapturous celebrations amongst the home faithful. Merstham rode their luck again in the final ten minutes as Kieran Knight headed Gary Frewin’s corner against the crossbar but The Moatsiders deservedly held on to pick up their first point at home in over two months.

Match Review: Despite the result Merstham are gradually looking better and fitter even with the inclusion of new signings Gareth Graham and Adam Broomhead who are clearly not match fit. The other ‘new’ signing, a former Moatside regular, Dean Gunner seemed to step back comfortably into the Merstham defence but his current partners don't match aptitude of Craig Vernon and Chris Boulter of two seasons ago. After four games without a goal it was good to see Sean Rivers pop up and score late in the second half a little too late to have any real effect on the game but had Merstham taken their chances in the first half things could have been so different. - Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy

Merstham scored their first goal in five games but two first-half strikes gave Ramsgate an unassailable lead. Liam Quinn and James Gregory gave Ramsgate the lead before Sean Rivers scored for The Moatsiders with ten minutes remaining but after a tense finale it proved to be just a consolation. The Moatsiders welcomed back top scorer Harry Ottaway who scored the only goal in the season’s earlier fixture between the two teams.

Since that fixture in December, The Moatsiders have only claimed nine league points and they made the worst possible start as Quinn headed home Mitchell Sherwood’s third minute corner to gift Ramsgate an early lead. Merstham looked their most dangerous through set-plays and were unlucky not to have equalised after Ollie Gray headed Michael Corbett’s long throw onto his own crossbar.  Moments later, Ottaway flicked another Corbett long throw to the back post where Dean Gunner was waiting but he headed over the bar from less than six yards. Merstham created their best chance on 23 minutes as Omar Folkes played a one-two with Dan Harding and struck a low shot across goal but keeper Jack Smelt managed to divert the effort with his foot. This proved to be pivotal as Ramsgate doubled their lead ten minutes later as another Sherwood cross on the right found Gregory on the edge of the area and the defender arrowed a low volley into the opposite corner.

The Moatsiders fought back in the second half creating a couple of half chances as Gunner headed over Bradley Duke’s cross and Sean Rivers lifted an effort inside the area over Smelt but unfortunately onto the roof of the net. Ottaway epitomised Merstham’s passion and determination and after 75 minutes the striker drove past a couple defenders and struck a fierce 20-yard effort agonisingly just over the bar. Merstham gave themselves a lifeline on 81 minutes as Sean Rivers headed Adam Moriarty’s free-kick past Smelt for their first goal in almost eight hours of football. The Moatsiders pressed forward in the final few minutes, firing shots from all angles, but Ramsgate managed to cling on for the victory.

Match Review: Merstham failed to score for their fourth consecutive game as they went down 3-0 away at Walton Casuals. In the first half the Moatsiders held their own and put together some neat episodes of play but all without reward. The second half saw the now familiar lack of stamina in many of the Merstham players and the very physical WC side were quick to take up the advantage with two goals from Chris Drake and a late goal from Kofi Lockhart-Adams. Merstham showed some improvement but must look to get some points to make absolutely sure of Ryman League football next season.- Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy

Merstham failed to score for the fourth consecutive game after being overpowered by a physical Walton Casuals side. On a glorious sunny afternoon The Moatsiders created the better chances in the first half, but the gloom of recent weeks returned in the second as two goals from Chris Drake and a late strike from Kofi Lockhart-Adams gave Casuals a comfortable victory.

In a frenetic opening both teams had a great opportunity to take an early lead. Drake quickly anticipated Michael Corbett’s fourth minute header back towards his own goal and lifted the ball over Ian Chatfield but fortunately for Merstham the effort drifted the wrong side of the far post. The Moatsiders came even closer to scoring in the ninth minute as debutant Joshua Smith’s diving header from Adam Moriarty’s deep cross came crashing back off the post. Merstham pressed hard and forced the Casuals midfield into mistakes but they could not find the breakthrough. Sean Rivers pulled his one-on-one effort wide of the far post and Daniel Harding’s first-time volley flew agonisingly over the bar just minutes before the interval.

Casuals imposed their physical game on The Moatsiders in the second half and their pressure paid off nine minutes after the restart. A good flowing move down the right wing saw Liam Wright square the ball inside to Drake who blasted an effort past Chatfield from the edge of the area. The home side doubled their lead on 65 minutes after Chatfield innocuously slipped and allowed Drake to tap the ball into an empty net for his second of the match. Merstham pushed forward and brought on defender Craig Vernon to play upfront in the final ten minutes but the tactical switch made little difference as Casuals grabbed a third on the counter in injury time. Daniel Lawson put Lockhart-Adams through on-goal and the substitute casually rolled the ball into the bottom corner to leave Merstham fans apprehensively looking towards the bottom of the league.

Match Review: Merstham were demolished by a clinical display of football from Leatherhead who, had they broken into a sweat, could have easily reached double figures. A hatrick for the Tanners from Tommy Hutchings and a late goal from defender Liam Pestle made sure they stayed in the promotion hunt leaving Merstham without a win in their last eight games. The Moatsiders seemed to lack ambition and direction and looked as if they just can’t wait for the season to end. It’s going to be very hard for Manager Andy Martin to motivate a team that just doesn’t want to play; perhaps he should take them to see some of our Youth teams who simply play for the love of the game and want to win against anything that is thrown at them. Several Merstham fans left early to chants from the Leatherhead supporters of “We can see you sneaking out” which did bring a wry smile to the faces of those who stuck it out. .- Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy

Merstham slumped to their heaviest away defeat of the season against promotion chasing Leatherhead. The Moatsiders were outclassed in every department by a Leatherhead side who won without getting out of second gear thanks to a Tommy Hutchings hat-trick and a late goal from Liam Pestle.

There was little goalmouth action in the first twenty minutes until a little ingenuity from Harry Ottaway. The Merstham striker cleverly chipped the ball over a defender’s head and struck a fierce volley from 25 yards but the effort fell straight into the hands of goalkeeper Chico Ramos. Leatherhead took the lead three minutes later following a scramble inside the penalty area. The ball fell kindly to Hutchings with his back to goal and the striker managed to turn and shoot through the legs of Bradley Duke across goal into the far corner. Mu Maan’s sliced volley came back off the crossbar for Leatherhead on 30 minutes before Merstham created their best chance four minutes later. Omar Folkes put Dale Marvell’s corner back into the box towards Freddie Myers but the midfielder managed to head over the bar from just six yards.

Leatherhead dictated the pace of the game in the second half and put the game beyond doubt eight minutes after the restart as Hutchings converted Greg Andrew’s cross at the near post. Dale Marvell had a couple of speculative long range efforts for Merstham before Hutchings grabbed his third on 74 minutes as he drifted unnoticed into the penalty area and headed a cross from the left into the opposite corner. The Moatsiders looked one-dimensional throughout the contest resorting to long balls and the midfield failing to win any second balls. In contrast, Leatherhead could have reached double figures with the amount of chances they created. Pestle eventually added a fourth in the final minute of the ninety with a low volley from ten yards to compound Merstham’s miserable Friday evening.

Match Review: Merstham were warmly welcomed at Salters Lane and turned on a vastly improved performance in a hard fought goalless draw giving Merstham 23 away points compared to only 14 at home. Both keepers played a considerable part in keeping the two sides’ level although strikers from both teams had their chances..- Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy

A much improved Merstham showed plenty of desire, passion and commitment after a hard fought but ultimately goalless draw against Faversham Town. Both sides had chances to claim victory in the second half but the game will only be remembered for the events in injury time as Faversham’s Damian Abel was sent off after making an obscene gesture to one of his own fans.

There was little action in an evenly contested first half although the linesman provided some light entertainment when the game had to be stopped after the official lost his right boot. After the match resumed, Merstham had the first shot in anger on 23 minutes. Harry Ottaway flicked the ball past Jack Baldwin and struck a fierce right footed effort across goal but Simon Overland managed to push the ball past the far post. Moments later, Faversham should have taken the lead after Dane Luchford met Tom Hickman’s cross before Ian Chatfield could catch the ball but luckily for the keeper the header looped over the crossbar.

Faversham started the second half brightly with Abel blasting an effort over from 12 yards and Ashley Brown heading Dave Botterill’s corner just over the bar. The hosts continued to pile on the pressure and Luchford was denied a terrific goal after Chatfield managed to get his hand onto the midfielder’s thunderous 20-yard effort that looked destined to fly into the top corner. Merstham brought on Ross White for the final 15 minutes and the striker almost scored with his first touch after running onto Ottaway’s header but Overland did well to push White’s low effort to safety. The Moatsiders attacked with conviction in the last quarter of the match which saw Ottaway twice denied in the final ten minutes. Firstly, he watched Shane Hamshare clear his header from a Freddie Myers corner off the line and minutes later Overland managed to tip another Ottaway header over the bar. Chatfield denied Matt Bourne in the closing stages after the defender headed Luchford’s corner straight into the keeper’s arms from close range before the bizarre injury time incident. After Abel was flagged offside, a member of the crowd questioned the striker’s commitment to the team. Abel reacted angrily and made a gesture towards the spectator. The referee immediately brandished the red card and Abel needed to be hauled away from going into the stand to leave a sour taste to a largely forgettable match.

Match Review:. A poor and bitterly disappointing performance from a jaded looking Merstham team who weren’t a patch on the side that drew at Worthing on Saturday; it was their fifth home defeat on the bounce and the Moatside faithful are voicing their concerns as to why Merstham have such a poor home record. Let’s take nothing away from Whyteleafe they are a side on the up and have three fine goal scorers in Fred Flemming, Chris O’Flaherty and Ryan Thomas and it was Flemming and Thomas who rained heavily on Merstham’s parade. Fans were also surprised when, at 3-0 down, Andy Martin sent on two debutants and didn't look to the experience of Michael Corbett and Freddie Myers. So not a good result with Faversham Town and Leatherhead waiting in the wings.- Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy

Merstham crashed to another home defeat after an abysmal performance against Whyteleafe. Optimism surrounded The Moatside after Saturday’s entertaining draw away at Worthing but two first half goals from Fred Fleming and another from Ryan Thomas after the interval saw Merstham continue their disastrous home form.

Merstham survived an early scare when Whyteleafe were awarded a penalty after Craig Vernon needlessly lunged at Fabian Batchelor. Dan Frith drilled the spot kick straight down the middle but luckily Ian Chatfield managed to save the effort diving away to his right with his legs. However, the relief was short lived as an unmarked Fleming headed Frith’s deep corner into the roof of the net to give the visitors a deserved lead after 20 minutes. Whyteleafe doubled their advantage just eight minutes later after Chatfield spilt another dangerous Frith cross and the ball fell kindly to Fleming who volleyed home his second past a couple of defenders on the line. Dale Marvell had a couple of speculative long range efforts for Merstham before Harry Ottaway had The Moatsiders best chance but he headed Marvell’s corner into the side netting just before the interval.

It was the same story in the second half as Merstham failed to string two passes together and chased their opponents’ shadows for long periods of the game.  Whyteleafe managed a third on the counter after 53 minutes as Thomas struck a low right footed drive off the inside of the far post. Merstham made a triple substitution on the hour as Danny Davenport, Leon McDowell and Steve Rollinson came on but all three failed to make any impact on the match. The Moatsiders only shot on-target came fifteen minutes from time but goalkeeper Michael Lidbury superbly backpedalled to tip over Ottaway’s looping 25-yard effort.

Merstham showed little ingenuity in the attacking third and with only one victory in twelve games the fans are anxiously looking down the table.

Match Review: A fine and a much improved performance by Merstham was let down by conceding two second half goals when they were 3-1 up, possibly a combination of a new look side and not being able to quite match Worthing for fitness, something the new management team have made a priority and is rapidly improving. Sean Rivers made a fantastic debut for the Moatsiders scoring twice then turning provider for the returning Harry Ottaway. Worthing looked the better side as the second half progressed scoring twice through Callum Saunders and an equalising goal from Terry Dodd. - Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy

Merstham let a two-goal lead slip as Worthing fought back to earn a point after a rollercoaster second half of attacking football. Sean Rivers scored twice on his debut and Harry Ottaway grabbed the third to give The Moatsiders a commanding lead and dent Worthing’s 125th anniversary celebrations. However, Callum Saunders and Terry Dodd hauled the hosts back into the contest and Worthing buoyed on by a vociferous home crowd almost snatched victory in the closing stages but were twice denied by the crossbar.

Rivers made the perfect start to his Merstham career as Worthing goalkeeper Tony Di Bernando’s headed clearance fell straight to the striker who lobbed the ball over the keeper for the his first goal after just six minutes. Worthing found it difficult to break down Merstham and the hosts took 35 minutes to create their first clear-cut opportunity. Tom Manton drifted past a couple of players and put George Gaskin through on-goal but Ian Chatfield superbly managed to get his hand to Gaskin’s low effort that looked destined for the bottom corner.

Merstham made two changes at the interval bringing on Freddie Myers and Steve Rollinson and once again The Moatsiders got off to a flying start. Rivers unleashed a furious drive from 20 yards that flew past Di Bernando into the top corner just two minutes after the restart. Worthing fortuitously reduced the deficit on 54 minutes as Saunders’ acute angled cross on the right by-line looped over Chatfield into the net. But almost immediately Merstham regained their two-goal advantage. Rivers headed Chatfield’s route one ball into Ottaway’s path and the striker majestically looped the ball over defender Steve Metcalf with his first touch and tucked his effort into the bottom corner with his second. Saunders converted his second on 61 minutes volleying Tom Lawley’s cross at the far post and the hosts equalised ten minutes later as an unmarked Terry Dodd headed home a Saunders corner from close range. The equaliser dramatically shifted the momentum towards Worthing and Saunders hit the crossbar less than a minute later from Tom Manton’s low cross. Merstham had their chances to snatch the winner but Ottaway could not keep his volley down from Rivers’ cross and Myers crashed his effort into the side netting after bursting through the hosts defence towards the penalty area. Worthing struck the woodwork again on 81 minutes as Gaskin poked John Lansdale’s long throw onto the bar. Moments later, Dodd had the victory in his sights when the striker rounded Chatfield on the edge of the area. But from out of nowhere Bradley Duke managed to slide-in and clear the striker’s goal bound effort as Merstham somehow escaped the south coast with a point.

Match Review: With Craig Vernon injured during the warm-up Manager Andy Martin made an inspired change bringing in Bradley Duke who played a well deserved ‘Man of the Match’ game and was a motivating force to those about him. Merstham had several chances in the first half but nothing really to write home about. If there is a legacy leftover from Graeme Banyard’s reign it’s the lack of fitness through an almost non-existent training regime one thing Andy Martin is already getting to grips with. This proved to be the case in the second half as Whitstable gained the upper hand as Merstham flagged but it wasn’t until the last kick of the game that The Oystermen tore the heart out of Merstham through Gareth Cornhill. - Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy

Gareth Cornhill’s injury-time strike gave Whitstable Town victory after Merstham’s woeful second half performance. Despite the late drama, it was an afternoon when entertainment was at a premium although the heavy pitch played its part as both teams found it difficult to muster any momentum. It could have been so different for Merstham who weathered the early storm to create the best first-half chance as Freddie Myers struck the post but thereafter The Moatsiders failed to create any chances of note in the second.

Caretaker Manager Andy Martin brought Bradley Duke and Fabio Saraiva into the first eleven to shore up the defence and the changes had a positive effect. Colin Harvey did well to put Lloyd Blackman off his twelve minute effort after the striker went through on-goal and slipped at the pivotal moment. Then minutes later, Duke’s last ditch tackle prevented Ian Pulman from adding to his twelve goals this season. Merstham had ten set piece opportunities but only tested Shaun Smith once as the keeper somehow managed to get fingertips to Dale Marvell’s 30 yard free-kick after 15 minutes. The Moatsiders created their best chance on 35 minutes as Freddie Myers burst down the left wing towards goal and crashed a fierce low effort against the near post. Marvell and Adam Moriarty had speculative long range efforts before the break but neither troubled Smith as a goalless first half drew to a close.

Whitstable dominated after the interval and should have taken the lead after 58 minutes but Dan Wisker incredibly managed to scoop Louis Smith’s cross over the bar from six yards. Merstham barely threatened the host’s penalty area let alone their goal in the second half and had to withstand late Whitstable pressure. Steve Rollinson produced a perfectly timed tackle to deny Pulman ten minutes from time and when an unmarked Dan William headed Cornhill’s free-kick over the bar in the final minute of the ninety, the match looked destined to finish goalless. But in the third minute of injury time, Saraiva sliced his clearance to Cornhill who danced past a couple of Merstham players and fired his shot across Rob O’Hara into the top corner with the final kick of the game.

Match Review: If new Manager Andy Martin had any worries about how things would go on his first game in charge they were dispelled by some fine play from a positive looking Merstham side. With several forced changes due to injury it was a different looking Merstham side that took on local rivals Chipstead. Chips took an early lead through prolific goalscorer Ray Freeman but twenty minutes later a combination of Freddie Myers and Tiago Andre gave Andrade his third goal in his third appearance and it finished 1-1 at the break. It was Freeman again who put the home side in front but not for long. With twenty minutes left to play Dale Marvell headed home a corner for the equaliser. Merstham began to look tired but managed to hold on for the draw. - Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy

Merstham produced a gutsy fightback to come from behind twice and earn a deserved point against local rivals Chipstead. Ray Freeman gave Chipstead the lead early in each half but Tiago Andrade and Dale Marvell equalised to give Merstham’s Caretaker Manager Andy Martin his first point. Martin made a number of changes to the starting line-up including promoting Colin Harvey from the reserves, switching Dale Marvell into the centre of midfield and restoring Craig Vernon to the captaincy.

Chipstead dominated the early exchanges and took the lead inside ten minutes as Freeman took advantage of Steve Rollinson’s slip inside the area and chipped the ball over an advancing Rob O’Hara into the far corner. Merstham grew into the match and created their best chance on 29 minutes. Troy Ferguson fizzed the ball into the path of Freddie Myers but goalkeeper Joe Grant quickly rushed off his line to block his effort and Ross White volleyed the rebound over the bar. White made amends three minutes later after capitalising on a poor Chipstead free-kick to put Andrade through on goal and the striker slipped the ball past Grant for his third Merstham goal in consecutive games. O’Hara kept Merstham on level terms as the keeper saved from Freeman’s turn and shot inside the area and then pushed Liam Grier’s low effort that looked destined for the bottom corner round the post.

Chipstead regained the initiative in the second half as Kofi Quarty danced through into the penalty area on the hour mark and supplied Freeman with his second as he fired his effort into the top right corner. Merstham fought back but found Grant in terrific form as he tipped over Adam Moriarty’s volley from a Myers corner and then the keeper superbly held onto Marvell’s 25-yard looping effort. However, Merstham finally found a way through on 78 minutes as Marvell rose highest to powerful head Freddie Myers’ corner past Gant into the net. Chipstead had a penalty appeal turned down in the closing stages after a goalmouth scramble. Then, Merstham had their own chance to sneak victory in injury time but Troy Ferguson blasted the ball over the bar in front of an open goal as both teams had to settle for a point.

Match Review: Merstham played some of their best football this season in the first half of this match with Tiago Andrade scoring his second successive goal in his first start for the club replacing the injured Harry Ottaway. But after taking a 2-0 lead through Ross White ten minutes into the second half Merstham seemed to switch off and Dulwich began to dominate play with a long ball tactic. This was rewarded minutes later when Ray Powell brought Dulwich back into the game. Looking by far the fitter of the two sides the visitors equalised with Powell getting his second. Merstham looked like they were going to hang on for a point when up popped Nyren Clunis in the 90th minute to snatch all three points from a downcast Merstham.. - Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy

Merstham suffered late heartbreak as Nyren Clunis’ dramatic injury time strike sealed an unlikely victory for Dulwich Hamlet. In a topsy-turvy encounter, Ross White and Tiago Andrade gave The Moatsiders a comfortable two goal lead. But Ray Powell struck twice in nine minutes as the momentum shifted towards the visitors and Clunis snatched the points in the final minute of stoppage time. Injuries to Harry Ottaway and goalkeeper Ian Chatfield paved the way for Andrade to make his first start following his debut goal against Walton Casuals and assistant coach Dave Tidy made a rare appearance in goal for Merstham.

Dulwich dominated the early exchanges but Tidy kept out Quade Taylor’s timid fifth minute shot from close range which should have been buried and then Merstham rode their luck as Rob Gradwell’s looping effort bounced off the post. Merstham started to pass the ball around with conviction and deservedly took the lead on 31 minutes. Andrade’s perfectly weighted pass put White through on-goal and he confidently slotted the ball under James Dunn. Tidy made a couple of good saves before the interval as he pushed away Clunis’ low drive from 25 yards and then the keeper held onto Gradwell’s turn and shot inside the area to keep Merstham ahead at the break.

Merstham looked dangerous on the counter and managed to double their advantage on 54 minutes as Andrade smashed home a fierce volley from Dale Marvell’s cross. Andrade almost sensationally grabbed another just two minutes later but his cheeky back heel from David Smith’s low cross was unfortunately directed the wrong side of Dunn’s near post. Merstham looked in control but disastrously Dulwich grabbed a lifeline out of nowhere on the hour mark as Powell played a one-two with Dean Carpenter on the left wing and prodded a low effort past Tidy into the bottom corner. Powell grabbed his second of the match on 69 minutes after the striker was left unmarked at the back post from Junior Kadi’s corner and the striker blasted his effort into the roof of the net. The momentum was firmly with the visitors but Merstham had their chance to sneak a victory with five minutes remaining. Smith burst past Lewis Goncalves on the right but as the winger was about to unleash his shot the ball bobbled up in front of him and fell straight into Dunn’s arms. It looked as though the game was headed for a draw but in the third minute of injury time Dulwich threw caution to the wind and Omer Lawson’s low cross from the right was converted into the net by Clunis to shatter Merstham’s resistance with virtually the last kick of the game.

Match Preview: Possibly one of Merstham’s worst performances this season, compounded by the bully-boy tactics of a desperate Walton Casuals players and bench whose aim was to win this match at any cost, made this a game to forget. Merstham looked indifferent and struggled for possession as they slid to the biggest defeat of the season and probably wished that the fog had descended much earlier on in the game. Still it did hide some of their embarrassed faces as they made their way back to the changing room at the end of the game. - Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy

Merstham suffered their heaviest defeat of the season after they were thrashed by Walton Casuals.

The visitors dominated from the outset and made the perfect start as Luke Evans scrambled home Mark Nicholls eighth minute corner. Casuals created plenty of chances and had the ball in the net when Charlie Ide burst through Merstham’s defence on 24 minutes but the referee blew his whistle after the striker fouled Freddie Myers on his way through. The visitors deservedly doubled their lead on the half hour as Nicholls lifted the ball into the path of Craig Totton who blasted the ball past Ian Chatfield from ten yards. Casuals continued to dictate proceedings as Merstham failed to string two passes together and to make matters worse the visitors were awarded a controversial penalty ten minutes into the second half. The linesman adjudged Bradley Duke had brought down Ide even though the referee was closer to the incident and initially dismissed the visitors appeal. Ide confidently struck the spot kick into the bottom left corner to effectively end the contest. Merstham did create some good openings thereafter as Matt York headed John Hamsher’s free-kick over the bar, Troy Ferguson dragged his low volley just wide of the far post and David Smith blazed an effort wide after goalkeeper James Warrington dropped Dale Marvell’s cross. The Moatsiders finally managed a consolation on 80 minutes after a terrific solo effort saw substitute Tiago Andrade run past two defenders and strike a low shot across Warrington into the far corner. The final ten minutes became farcical as fog descended on Moatside but the bad weather could not stop Casuals scoring two late goals. Liam Wright converted Ide’s low cross from eight yards after 82 minutes to restore their three goal cushion. Then, Chris Drake added a fifth in injury time by going round Chatfield and slotting the ball into an empty net to compound Merstham’s miserable evening.

Match Review: A good result for Merstham and a excellent first half performance highlighted by a stunning goal from Dale Marvell which must rank as one of Merstham’s best this season. The second half saw Godalming up a gear and it was no real surprise that they got an equaliser through Antonio Simeone. But Merstham, so often on the wrong end of a late goal, popped up with an 87th minute winner from Ross White, his third in seven appearances. - Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy

Merstham secured their first victory this year after a courageous display against Godalming Town. The Moatsiders extracted revenge for their extra time defeat in the Surrey Senior Cup a couple of weeks ago with a late show of their own as Ross White struck in the final ten minutes to seal their first win in six league games.

Merstham welcomed back Robb Sheridan after he rejoined the club following a four month absence and pushed Adam Moriarty into a five man midfield. The change had an immediate impact as Merstham dominated the first half. They should have taken the lead in the seventh minute as Harry Ottaway broke through Godalming’s defence and tried to lift the ball over Jamie Norris but the striker could not get enough elevation on his shot and Norris comfortably caught the ball. The Moatsiders major threat came down the right wing and on the half hour Norris spilled David Smith’s cross towards Ottaway who hooked the ball goalwards but Antonio Simeone managed to get back to clear the danger. It was a moment of magic that broke the deadlock for Merstham on 36 minutes as Dale Marvell capitalised on a poor Norris clearance and hit a thunderous effort to give the visitors a deserved lead before the interval.

Godalming fought back in the second half as Gavin Smith almost repeated his cup heroics but Ian Chatfield superbly denied the striker’s turn and shot after Merstham failed to clear James Evans corner. The hosts did equalise on 67 minutes when an Evans free-kick was spectacularly volleyed into the far corner by Simeone. The momentum was now with Godalming and they had an opportunity to win the match but Gabriel Odunaike directed an Evans cross wide from six yards. Then, against the run of play, Merstham incredibly snatched victory on 86 minutes as Ottaway latched onto Jordan Cheadle’s long ball and squared the ball across the box to White for the easiest of finishes. Godalming almost equalised two minutes later but Chatfield somehow managed to get his hands onto Evans’ deflected effort and push the effort onto the post as Merstham held on to record their first victory of 2011.

Again Merstham failed to put away their chances, even top scorer Harry Ottaway hasn’t managed to score this year and the frustration shows. Burgess Hill had their fair share of chances in the first half and finally broke the deadlock on the hour through Lloyd Cotton. Somewhat surprisingly John Hamsher replaced Craig Dunne with twenty five minutes to play and it was obvious he was not quite match fit which when pushing for an equaliser was probably not the wisest move. The Moatsider’s evergreen keeper Ian Chatfield had yet another brilliant game making several crucial saves limiting the Hillians to a single goal. - Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy

Merstham lost ground on the playoffs after Lloyd Cotton’s second half strike gave fellow contenders Burgess Hill Town a well deserved victory.

A scrappy opening saw the visitors create the better chances as Matt Percival’s 25 yard free-kick flew just wide of the post and Ian Chatfield denied Danny Curd after a good double save from close range. Merstham got themselves into promising positions but failed to get on the end of dangerous crosses. They had their first shot on target after 26 minutes as Neil Watt’s mistimed clearance fell to Michael Corbett who saw his effort parried away by Joel Harding. The home side survived a scare on the half hour as Curd drifted round Chatfield and squared the ball to Steve Harper but Chatfield recovered in time to put Harper off his shot as he blazed his effort wide. Merstham sprung into life in the final five minutes of the half when Corbett flicked on Matt York’s long ball into the path of Harry Ottaway who went round Harding but the keeper quickly got back up on his feet to deny the striker. Chances came at both ends as Corbett headed Dale Marvell’s cross straight at Harding and at the other end Chatfield had to be alert to save at Curd’s feet as the striker was running through on-goal but it remained goalless at the break.

Burgess Hill recaptured the momentum in the second half and took the lead on the hour mark when Cotton managed to expertly loop the ball over Ian Chatfield before the keeper could clear the danger from outside the area. Chatfield kept the home side in the game two minutes later getting fingertips to Harper’s low driven effort that looked destined for the bottom corner. It took Merstham until the final ten minutes to mount a fight back but found Harding in superb form to keep out the onslaught. Harding denied Harry Ottaway at his near post after great work by David Smith to burst past Will Berry on the right wing. Then the keeper quickly rushed out to deny Dale Marvell after Ottaway had put the winger through on goal. Chatfield denied substitute Darren Boswell in injury time after another one-on-one chance went begging for the visitors but they had done enough to secure victory. For Merstham, the disappointing result leaves them without a win in their last five league matches and their challenge for a playoff spot in disarray.

Match Review: This was, to use an old cliché, a game of two halves. Merstham held their own in the first half and could have possibly gone in ahead at the break. But come the second half and Bognor Regis showed why they are one of the favourites for promotion this season. They simply outclassed Merstham with three well taken goals. Merstham can take some pride from the game as better sides have come up against the Rocks and fared worse. - Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy

Merstham were left to rue their first half chances as a well organised Bognor Regis Town displayed their promotion credentials. Troy Ferguson cancelled out Ben Johnson’s opener for The Moatsiders but Bognor displayed their killer instinct with three second half strikes leaving Merstham without a win in four league games.

Bognor broke the deadlock in the seventh minute as Aaron Murphy allowed Johnson to turn inside the area and he cleverly chipped the ball over Ian Chatfield to gift the visitors an early lead. Merstham fought back and created two good opportunities to equalise but found visiting goalkeeper Craig Stoner in excellent form. First, Stoner spread himself to deny Troy Ferguson from Michael Corbett’s long throw. Then the keeper superbly saved Ross White’s effort when the midfielder burst through Bognor’s defence following Harry Ottaway’s flick on.   The pressure finally paid off for Merstham on 27 minutes as Stoner parried Ottaway’s low effort and Ferguson reacted fastest to equalise. Both teams had chances to take the initiative before the break but Jason Prior headed Johnson’s free-kick onto the crossbar for Bognor and Stoner again denied Merstham saving Corbett’s one-on-one effort with his legs.

Bognor made a fast start after the interval and two minutes into the second half Prior burst past Matt York down the left wing and picked out Luke Nightingale who crashed his effort against the post. Nightingale collected the rebound and pulled the ball back for James Crane who swept the ball home for the visitors to retake the lead. Merstham were unlucky not to draw level on 55 minutes after an unmarked Ross White headed home Dale Marvell’s cross but the assistant put his flag up for offside to cut short the home fans celebration. This proved to be pivotal as just three minutes later Bognor doubled their lead after Prior this time burst down the right side and put a low ball across the box towards Nightingale who made no mistake from six yards. Bognor added a fourth on 71 minutes as Johnson dispossessed York and played Nightingale through on-goal and the striker buried his effort for his second of the match.

Merstham grabbed a consolation twelve minutes from time after Marvell headed substitute David Smith’s pinpoint cross into the roof of the net but it was too little too late as Bognor demonstrated what The Moatsiders need to do if they are to achieve a playoff spot.

Match Review: Yet another home draw in the league making it four on the trot; not an ideal way to push for a play-off place. After netting four times on Saturday Merstham seemed to have reverted to their old form of not being able to score as they should have killed off the game in the final twenty minutes. One positive point was the re-emergence of striker Ross White who now has two goals in his last two appearances to add to the fourteen he has scored so far for the reserves this season.  Whyteleafe on Friday night should be three points in the bag but then again we thought that against Corinthian-Casuals back in November. - Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy

Merstham squandered another lead at home after a lacklustre performance against Faversham Town. Ross White opened the scoring for the Moatsiders in the tenth minute but Matthew Bourne’s wonder strike just before the interval saw Merstham draw their third consecutive league match.

Merstham took the lead slightly against the run of play as Dale Marvell’s cross found its way through to White at the back post and he swept the ball home for an early lead. The home side created the better chances in the first half but failed to test goalkeeper Bob French. On the half hour mark, Billy Marshall side stepped Sam Gore inside the area but his weak shot was easily held by French. Moments later Craig Dunne ran onto White’s cross but the midfielder failed to control his first time shot as he lofted the effort over the bar. Faversham hardly threatened Merstham’s goal and when the home side headed away Dave Botterill’s 43rd minute corner it looked as though they had cleared the danger. But, Bourne picked up the loose ball 35 yards from goal and struck a ferocious effort that flew through a crowd of players into the bottom left corner for undoubtedly one of the goals of the season at the Moatside.

Faversham grew in confidence in the second half as Ian Chatfield twice came to Merstham’s rescue. First, Chatfield clawed away Dane Luchford’s close range header at the far post. Then the keeper gathered Damien Abel’s fierce effort, catching the ball at the second attempt while on the ground. Michael Corbett came on for Merstham in the final ten minutes and almost made an instant impact as his low effort struck the post and rebounded back to Troy Ferguson whose shot from ten yards crashed into the same post. Faversham almost won the match in injury time but Matt York cleared Botterill’s effort off the line and although this match was not a classic it will be remembered for Bourne’s superb equaliser to make the scoreline 1-1 on 11/1/11.

Match Review: At last Merstham found their goal scoring touch but unfortunately, it seems, at the expense of their ability to protect keeper Ian Chatfield. Put that aside and an eight goal thriller is far better to watch, from a supporter’s point of view, than the 0-0 draw some had predicted for this game. Merstham went behind on four occasions but goals from Marshall, Cheadle, Duke and a superb headed goal from substitute Ross White brought them back into the game and they managed to hang on for the draw. - Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy

Merstham came from behind four times to rescue a point against Chatham Town in an enthralling eight goal thriller.

Chatham took the lead against the run of play after 18 minutes as Billy Shinners headed home Anthony Hogg’s cross before Ian Chatfield could reach the ball at the far post. Billy Marshall blazed a long range effort over the bar on 27 minutes but found his goal scoring touch three minutes later with a terrific solo effort after beating two defenders and slotting the ball past goalkeeper James Tedder. Merstham survived a scare in the final five minutes of the half when Chatfield struck his clearance against Shinners but luckily the ball ended up drifting away from goal. However, Chatham did regain the advantage on 42 minutes as Brad Potter headed a long ball towards Leroy Huggins who cleverly headed the ball over Chatfield into the net. Merstham incredibly bounced back just two minutes later as Jordan Cheadle headed Dale Marvell’s corner in from close range to send the two sides level at the break.

The action in the second half showed no signs of slowing down as Chatham scored three minutes after the restart. Merstham failed to close down Potter on the edge of the area and his low shot deflected past Chatfield into the bottom left corner. The Moatsiders should have equalised after 56 minutes but an unmarked Harry Ottaway headed wide from eight yards with Tedder in no man’s land. Fortunately, Merstham put the disappointment behind them and found the target three minutes later as Bradley Duke glanced in another dangerous Marvell cross. Chatham edged ahead for the fourth time on 68 minutes as Shinners unleashed a spectacular volley from 25 yards that looped over Chatfield for his second. After an action packed second half, Merstham did not deserve to leave empty handed and with seven minutes remaining Marvell picked out Ross White whose superb diving header flew past Tedder into the far corner to equalise. Both sides had chances in the final minutes, most notably Shinners in the dying seconds but Chatfield denied the striker his hat-trick from point blank range and as the final whistle blew everyone stood up to applaud the players effort after this hugely entertaining match.

Match Review:  If there is anything to blame for Merstham losing this cup tie it’s their failure to score from the numerous chances their flowing football creates. With the exception of Harry Ottaway, who took his tally to 14 goals in all competitions this season, the Moatsiders seem to have forgotten how to hit the back of the net. Take nothing away from Godalming they are a good determined side who fought and played hard. Merstham lost two key players in the first hour, Craig Vernon with a suspected hamstring injury and Louis Clark who took a nasty blow to the cheek, which didn’t help their cause. - Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy

Merstham threw away a place in the Surrey Senior Cup third round as reigning champions Godalming Town snatched victory in extra time. The Moatsiders looked destined to progress following Harry Ottaway’s second half header but Gavin Smith equalised in injury time to send the tie into extra time. Smith stabbed home a second in the first period and although Godalming were later reduced to ten men, Merstham could not find a way back into the match.

Merstham should have been out of sight in an enthralling first half which saw the hosts squander chance after chance. Their best opportunity came ten minutes before the break when a three-on-one counter attack saw Dale Marvell burst through the Godalming defence down the left wing. Marvell played the ball across the penalty area towards Ottaway in the centre and with only the goalkeeper to beat from eight yards the striker’s effort drifted agonisingly wide. Merstham finally broke the deadlock after 56 minutes as Ottaway powerfully headed home Billy Marshall’s cross to breathe a huge sigh of relief around The Moatside. Merstham looked to double their advantage but despite controlling the game for long periods, they failed to display the killer instinct in the attacking third.  Godalming pushed forward in the final stages and in the third minute of stoppage time Smith headed home Rishi Nankani's deflected cross to send the game into extra time.

Godalming goalkeeper Paul McCarthy was called into action early on tipping Marshall’s fierce effort over the bar before Smith prodded home Chris Kiganda’s low cross for the lead in the 99th minute. The visitors were reduced to ten men moments later when Miles Mitchell received his second yellow but Godalming held on to end Merstham’s cup dreams for another season.

Match Review:  Sittingbourne fans were heard to say this was a fair result but Merstham will see this as two points dropped as Paul Semakula’s equaliser to Billy Marshall’s fifteenth minute goal had clearly gone out of play before it was played back in to the Merstham box. Both referee and linesman were duped by the Brickies’ forwards as the Merstham defence stood and waited for the goal kick to be awarded. On a brighter note it was good to see Craig Dunne make an appearance after a long layoff due to injury and new Skipper Matt York looked comfortable in the role. - Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy

Merstham remain within touching distance of the playoffs after a battling performance against Sittingbourne. Billy Marshall scored his first goal since September to give Merstham an early lead but Paul Semakula controversially equalised for the visitors on the stroke of half-time.

Merstham started the New Year positively and took the lead after 15 minutes. Harry Ottaway skilfully turned Nick Reeves on the edge of the area and fired a low cross towards Marshall who converted the simplest of finishes. Sittingbourne should have equalised eight minutes later but Matt York superbly cleared Tom Bradbrook’s effort off the line when the striker just needed to roll the effort past the defender at the far post. Dale Marvell created a couple of openings on the half-hour. First, the winger drifted inside from the left and flashed an effort just wide and moments later Marvell fired narrowly over after Ottaway dummied Marshall’s cross. A goalmouth scramble from a dangerous Joe Horlock cross saw Merstham clear another Bradbrook effort off the line before the visitors scored a dubious goal before the break. Hicham Akhazzan played a one-two on the left but appeared to leave the pitch before receiving the ball back and with Merstham defenders appealing for offside Semakula blasted home the equaliser.

Sittingbourne dominated after the interval with Bradbrook causing chaos to Merstham’s defence. First, the striker glanced a Ryan Golding cross wide of the far post. Moments later, he fired a 25-yard effort straight at Ian Chatfield. Finally, another Horlock cross saw Bradbrook head straight at Chatfield from close range all within the opening ten minutes of the second half. Merstham created a couple of opportunities as Ottaway headed Marvell’s cross over the bar and David Smith’s audacious lob was caught by a back peddling Matt Reed. But for the majority of the half every time Merstham cleared the danger, Sittingbourne just kept coming straight back. Ian Chatfield produced a great double save to deny substitute Jaie Nuttall 15 minutes from time as the visitors failed to breakthrough Merstham’s resistance. Craig Dunne made his comeback in the final ten minutes after being injured for five months and almost made an immediate impact as he struck a first-time volley from 20 yards wide of the post but in the end both sides settled for a point.

Match Review:  In the dying seconds of the game Harry Ottaway grabbed his thirteenth goal of the season, a ‘13’ that was to prove lucky for Merstham, and secured all three points to keep the Moatsiders in touch with the play-off places. Both teams were visibly tired at the end of the games as flowing football was made difficult by the heavy and very bumpy pitch. Ian Chatfield in the Merstham goal made several crucial saves to keep the scores level but it was the Rams who must have felt devastated as Ottaway tucked away the match winning goal in the 89th minute. - Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy

Harry Ottaway scored a dramatic winner in injury time as Merstham snatched victory against Ramsgate. The game looked as though it was heading for a goalless draw, but with 90 minutes on the clock Ottaway took Jordan Cheadle’s long ball in his stride and slid a low effort past Jack Smelt to spark euphoric celebrations amongst the away bench and travelling fans.

The Moatsiders returned to action following a three-week break due to the bad weather and initially looked rusty as the hosts piled on the early pressure. Ian Chatfield fumbled Mark Lovell’s twelfth minute header but fortunately for the visitors the ball crept over the crossbar. Chatfield was again called into action five minutes later after a one-two with Lovell put Warren Schulz through but the keeper superbly blocked Schulz’s effort with his feet and quickly scrambled to hold onto the rebound. Merstham’s best chance came on the half-hour as Ottaway picked out Michael Corbett but the striker failed to wrap his left foot around the ball and his effort trickled wide.

After an uninspiring first half, Merstham came out stronger in the second and should have taken the lead on 68 minutes. Smelt came out of his area before Ottaway could reach a long ball and the keeper headed the ball straight into Corbett’s path but with defenders in front of him the striker could only his effort over the empty goal. Moments later, Ottaway controlled Dale Marvell’s cross on his chest and volleyed agonisingly over the top right corner. Marvell arrowed an effort inches wide of the post after 72 minutes and six minutes later Ottaway sliced a volley wide of the target while bearing down on goal. Merstham survived a late scare as Billy Marshall gave the ball away to Gary Lockyer following a short corner and presented Ramsgate with a two-on-one counter attack. Lockyer squared the ball across to George Amber but Wes Goggin superbly managed to direct Amber away from the goal and allowed Merstham defenders to recover and clear the ball from danger. Chatfield saved Lockyer’s 25-yard free-kick low to his right on 89 minutes and just a minute later Merstham sealed victory as Ottaway slotted home to keep The Moatsiders in touch of the playoffs.

Match Review:  A dismal display by Merstham who were lucky not to concede more goals against a resolute Casuals side whose league position belies their ability. Merstham looked lost throughout the game with only glimpses of what they are capable of achieving. Was complacency to blame? You decide. - Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy
Merstham threw away victory for the second successive weekend after a dismal display against struggling Corinthian Casuals. Louis Clark put The Moatsiders ahead early in the second half but Casuals responded with two goals in five minutes to leave Merstham fans wondering what was worse, the team’s performance or their failure to close out matches. After conceding a late equaliser to Eastbourne Town last weekend, Corinthian Casuals presented an opportunity to get back on track as they occupied the bottom of the table having only won two league games this season. But it was Merstham who failed to make an impression on the match, resorting to route one football on a smooth playing surface and letting Casuals dictate possession.

The hosts should have taken the lead on 18 minutes as Kane Sergeant skilfully sidestepped two Merstham players and put Robert Stevenson through on-goal but Ian Chatfield superbly turned the striker’s effort onto the post. From the resulting corner, Chatfield prevented another certain goal as he saved a Wayne Finnie header at the far post when it looked as though the defender just needed to nod the ball into an empty net. Merstham barely threatened the Casuals goal in the first half and their only chance came after 28 minutes when Craig Vernon headed Jordan Cheadle’s free-kick straight at keeper Luke Naughton. The hosts kept pressing and were unlucky on the half-hour mark as Sergeant’s 25-yard free-kick came back off the inside of the post and across the goal line where Bradley Duke bravely cleared the ball off the line before Casuals attackers could pounce for a tap-in.

Merstham looked brighter after the interval and within minutes Harry Ottaway latched onto a long ball but with Naughton caught in no man’s land the striker pulled an effort just a whisker past the post. The Moatsiders surprisingly took the lead on 53 minutes after a one-two between Louis Clark and Billy Marshall saw Clark drive straight through the heart of the Casuals defence and lift the ball over Naughton for his first Merstham goal. It looked as though the visitors were on their way to three points but from out of nowhere Saheed Sankoh’s superbly struck first time volley from 20 yards flew through a crowd of players into the bottom corner for the equaliser on 75 minutes. This sparked an action packed finale as both teams searched for a winner but it was Casuals who scored the decisive goal five minutes later as Stevenson reacted quickest from a rebound to fire home from close range. Merstham found it difficult to unlock the Casuals defence in the final minutes with David Smith’s looping cross coming off the top of the bar the closest the visitors came to an equaliser. Former Merstham striker Mu Maan almost rubbed salt in the wound as he struck the post with his powerful 25-yard effort but Casuals deservedly celebrated moving off the bottom of the table while Merstham have plenty to ponder if they want to consider themselves playoff contenders

Match Review:  A fine solid performance by Merstham that ended in heartache as Eastbourne Town equalised in the final minute of added on time. Harry Ottaway had given Merstham the lead on 32 minutes when he despatched a Michael Corbett pass. New signing Matt York gave added strength to the defence and looks a good prospect for the club. As the game neared the end the Merstham supporters were already preparing to celebrate another three points but they hadn’t counted on the determination of Town’s Skipper Greg Manton who took a great delight in silencing them. - Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy
Merstham suffered late heartache after Eastbourne Town snatched an equaliser with the last kick of the game. The Moatsiders took a first half lead through in-form striker Harry Ottaway but invited pressure on themselves after the interval and Greg Manton broke their resistance in the final minute of injury time.

Merstham started on the front foot as Dale Marvell poked Michael Corbett’s long throw over the bar in the fourth minute and two minutes later Ottaway breezed past three defenders but struck his effort wide of the far post. However, the hosts survived a scare on 23 minutes as Matt Fernando took Danny Simmonds cross in his stride and struck his effort against the crossbar. Merstham managed to edge ahead eight minutes later after Eastbourne failed to clear a free-kick and Michael Corbett fired a low cross to the far post where Ottaway was waiting to tap home for his fifth goal in a week. Ottaway continued to impress and the striker clipped the top of the bar following Merstham’s best move of the match with an effort that looked destined for the top corner just before half-time.

Eastbourne piled on the pressure in the second half and came close to an equaliser when Sam Crabb crashed his 20-yard effort against the crossbar on 56 minutes. Merstham threatened briefly as Corbett fired a couple of decent efforts from outside the area but saw both efforts easily saved by Kieron Thorpe. Although Merstham restricted Eastbourne to long-range efforts, they struggled to keep possession of the ball in midfield and had to deal with wave after wave of attacks. Crabb curled another effort just wide of the far corner, Charlie Farmer struck a low volley from a corner into the side netting and Evan Archibald headed Liam Wright’s cross inches wide from with less than five minutes remaining. Merstham looked as though they had seen off their opponents. But in the third minute of stoppage time they failed to clear the danger and Manton scrambled the ball over the line to leave The Moatsiders with that sour taste of two points dropped.

Match Review:  This game showed how Merstham can bounce back after a disappointing performance. Although HYMCA scared the pants off the Merstham teams by taking a 2-1 lead through two goals from former Merstham striker Gavin Gordon they hadn’t counted on this match turning into the ‘Harry Ottaway Show’. Four goals from the Moatsiders front man and one from Dale Marvell assured them of all three points and took the up to sixth place in the league. - Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy
Harry Ottaway struck four times to help Merstham recover from an early setback in an entertaining eight goal thriller against Horsham YMCA.

Horsham started brightly and deservedly opened the scoring after 18 minutes. Ian Chatfield could only parry Scott Kirkwood’s fierce effort straight to former Merstham striker Gavin Gordon who made no mistake from close range. The early goal brought The Moatsiders to life and they equalised on the half-hour mark as Ottaway cleverly spun round his marker and diverted Adam Moriarty’s deep cross underneath goalkeeper Mark Fox into the corner. Horsham managed to restore their advantage just three minutes later as Gordon superbly headed Fabian Brown’s cross into the top left hand corner leaving Chatfield rooted to his goal line. The Moatsiders again responded quickly but few would have predicted the nature of their equaliser. Dale Marvell’s cross from 40 yards floated over the Horsham defence but incredibly bounced over Fox and drifted into the far corner. With luck on their side, Merstham pivotally stuck a killer blow on the stroke of half-time. Ottaway with his back to goal from 20 yards, turned and unleashed a powerful low effort that nestled inside the far corner to give The Moatsiders the lead for the first time.

Merstham confidently expressed themselves in the second half and doubled their advantage ten minutes after the restart as Ottaway headed home a Freddie Myers cross to seal his hat-trick. The Moatsiders looked comfortable with their two goal cushion but on 64 minutes disaster struck. Chatfield came out to collect a long ball but with Craig Vernon back peddling towards his own goal, the defender headed the ball over his goalkeeper and allowed Joey Collewijn to convert the simplest of finishes to set up a tense finale. But Merstham made sure of victory in the final five minutes as another Myers cross picked out Ottaway who looped his header over Fox and although the keeper got his hands to the ball, he could only push the effort into the roof of the net leaving the striker to celebrate his magical night.

Match Review:  If you listened to the Merstham fans as they left Stompond Lane after this match many would tell you that this was the worst game they has seen Merstham play this season and they probably weren’t wrong. Manager Graeme Banyard was attending a wedding so was fortunate enough to miss his team’s poor performance. The problem was they didn’t play as a team it was a simple case of eleven individuals doing what they each thought best. W&H took the lead in the 24th minute through Dean Thomas but Merstham drew level within ten minutes when stand-in centre forward Michael Corbett netted for the Moatsiders. The second half was nearly all dominated by a rampant Swans side that was hell bent on revenge for Merstham knocking them out of the Surrey Senior Cup. And they were rewarded for their determination with two late goals through Scott Todd and Gary Frewen. Merstham’s ‘Man of the Match’ adjudicator decided that no player was worthy of the title although it was suggested that the unused subs, Aaron Murphy and Dan Coles could be chosen as they hadn’t made a mistake during the game. A bit harsh you may think and I expect a little criticism for my criticism but I’m only saying what of the majority of the Merstham faithful were thinking. - Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy
Merstham’s seven match unbeaten run came to a disappointing end after a lacklustre performance against Walton and Hersham. The Moatsiders, optimistic after beating their opponents in the Surrey Senior Cup, struggled to string two passes together whereas Walton in contrast looked hungry for revenge right from the first whistle.

Merstham came close to taking a first half lead. Steve Rollinson glanced a Freddie Myers free-kick inches past the post in the tenth minute and Harry Ottaway’s far post header was tipped over by Roberto Gagliardi midway through the half. But, Walton fought hard for every ball in midfield and edged ahead in this scrappy encounter after 24 minutes. Gary Frewen played the ball inside to Dean Thomas on the edge of the area and as the Merstham defence backed off, Thomas fired a low shot into the bottom left corner. The lead lasted only eight minutes as Ottaway drove down the right side and picked out Michael Corbett in the middle who confidently slotted the ball past Gagliardi for his first Merstham goal.

Walton continued to dominate possession in the second half but Merstham were able to threaten on the counter. Ottaway played Dale Marvell through in the 54th minute but the winger failed to test Gagliardi as he blazed the ball over the bar with a wild effort. Moments later, Ottaway broke again down the right in similar fashion to the earlier equaliser but this time a brilliant interception by defender Sam Labinjo prevented Corbett from putting The Moatsiders in the lead. Merstham’s failure in the attacking third proved to be pivotal as Walton turned up the heat and forced the visitors deeper inside their own half until finally with 15 minutes remaining the inevitable happened. Phil Williams evaded two challenges on the right wing and his low cross picked out an unmarked Scott Todd in the centre who squeezed the ball past Ian Chatfield from six yards to restore Walton’s advantage. With less than ten minutes left Merstham brought on Billy Marshall and Ben King upfront but they made no impression on the game as Walton wrapped up the victory in the final minute of normal time when Frewen converted Kenny Ojukwu’s cross with a diving header at the far post to sum up a disappointing day for The Moatsiders.

Review:  For the second week running Moatside was brought alive by some nail biting football and a hail of goals. Thirteen goals in two games may be a spectator’s delight however Graeme Banyard may have a different tale to tell; one of frustration as he watched his side battle for points against a very strong Worthing team whose position in the league belies their ability. And again like last week it was an own goal that gave Merstham the lead when Worthing Skipper Tony Timms put into his own net. Worthing equalised just six minutes later through Tom Lawley and twelve minutes into the second Merstham regained the lead with a goal from leading scorer Harry Ottaway. However goals from Terry Dodd and Mike Huckett put the Rebels in front with just minutes left to play. But the hadn’t counted on the determination of Jordan Cheadle who snatched an equaliser in the last minute of the game. - Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy
Jordan Cheadle bagged another late goal as Merstham salvaged a point against a resilient Worthing side. In similar fashion to last season’s meeting between the two sides where Merstham snatched a late victory, Worthing looked as though they had secured the three points going into injury time. But The Moatsiders ‘never say die’ attitude saw Cheadle grab a late goal for the second successive match to help Merstham extend their unbeaten league run to six games.

After a scrappy opening, Worthing came closest to breaking the deadlock on 33 minutes. Tony Timms met Luke Gedling’s corner at the far post but Ian Chatfield could only parry the effort towards Terry Dodd who somehow headed the rebound over from six yards. Merstham started to impose themselves on their opponents in the final five minutes of the half. Dale Marvell forced keeper Michael Hunter to tip his long range effort over the bar. Then from the resulting Freddie Myers corner, Timms diverted Tony Reid’s header into his own net for the lead. The Moatsiders could have doubled their advantage before the break after Hunter dropped Marvell’s corner but the ball fortuitously rebounded off the post and straight back into the keeper’s arms.

An action packed second half saw Merstham miss a glorious chance within the opening minute as Harry Ottaway headed Wes Goggin’s cross wide with only a defender on the line to beat. They paid the price as Worthing equalised just two minutes later after failing to clear Luke Gedling’s long throw, Tom Lawley waited unmarked at the back post to volley past Chatfield. Ottaway restored Merstham’s lead on 57 minutes after he latched onto Bradley Duke’s cross and the striker confidently lifted the ball over the advancing Hunter into the corner for his fifth goal in the last four games. Worthing squandered chances themselves as Chatfield tipped over Terry Dodd’s fierce shot and the keeper then managed to get fingertips to deflect Ryan McBride’s one-on-one effort onto the post. But the visitors turned up the heat and scored two goals in quick succession. Chatfield superbly saved Tom Manton’s low drive but the rebound fell kindly for Dodd to convert on 73 minutes. Then seven minutes later, Mike Huckett slotted home after a clever one-two with McBride on the edge of the area to give the visitors the lead with less than ten minutes remaining. Merstham pressed forward and finally in the first minute of injury time Cheadle poached at the far post from another dangerous Myers corner. History almost repeated itself as Ottaway’s late effort flew into the side netting but both sides will be relieved and frustrated at the same time with a point following this topsy-turvy encounter

Review:  If Merstham Manager Graeme Banyard had any hair he would have been pulling it out as he watched this game of ‘pinball’ football. Three times Merstham took the lead and three times Whitstable Town drew level it wasn’t until the dying minutes of the game that up popped Jordan Cheadle to secure all three points for the Moatsiders leaving no time for the Oystermen to reply. Merstham were gifted an own goal in the sixth minute when Jim Sherman put into his own net. This was followed by two trademark goals from Harry Ottaway before Cheadle’s match decider. - Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy

Jordan Cheadle secured Merstham’s third successive league victory in the dying minutes following a seven-goal thriller against Whitstable Town In an enthralling encounter. The Moatsiders edged their noses ahead three times before being pegged back each time but with 88 minutes on the clock Cheadle fired home a free-kick from 20 yards to seal an unforgettable victory.

Merstham made the perfect, if a little fortuitous; start when David Smith’s sixth minute effort deflected off the knee of Whitstable defender Jim Sherman for an early lead. The Moatsiders should have been four goals up inside the first 25 minutes after Harry Ottaway, Tony Reid and Wes Goggin all squandered golden opportunities on the wet, slippery surface. Their failure in front of goal came back to haunt them as Whitstable equalised on 29 minutes after Cheadle failed to clear Tom Parker’s cross and Ian Pulman was waiting at the far post to slot home. Merstham retook the lead six minutes before the interval as Ottaway poked home Dale Marvell’s low cross at the far post to give the hosts a deserved half-time lead.

Both teams pressed forward in the second half in an atmosphere which resembled a cup tie. But after 52 minutes, it was Whitstable who again drew level as Ian Chatfield dropped Dan Wisker’s corner straight to Stephen Lloyd who prodded the ball home from six yards. Just four minutes later Merstham regained the initiative as Ottaway converted Reid’s cross from close range in similar fashion to his first. However, the lead lasted less than two minutes as Wisker’s audacious chip from 20 yards looped over Chatfield into the far corner. The equaliser spurred on Whitstable who almost took the lead on 74 minutes as Pulman charged down Chatfield’s clearance but the ball drifted wide when it could have easily ended up in the back of the net. Merstham brought on Billy Marshall for the final 20 minutes in search of a winner and with three minutes remaining Ottaway was fouled just outside the area. Initially, the referee judged the defender had won the ball but reversed his decision after seeing the linesman flag. Cheadle blasted the free-kick low past a helpless Kevin Fewell into the far corner to send the home fans euphoric and brought an exciting climax to the second half of wonderful end-to-end football.

Review:  A gritty determined performance from Merstham maintained their unbeaten away record in the League this season. Both sides had their chances, Wes Goggin, scorer of the only goal of the game, came close as did Dale Marvell and veteran keeper Ian Chatfield was called upon to make some fine saves as Hamlet looked for an equaliser. A good tight team performance from the Moatsiders lifts them to seventh in the League. - Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy
Wes Goggin’s strike twelve minutes from time snatched another late victory for Merstham as they maintain their unbeaten away record in the league. The Moatsiders found themselves constantly under pressure from Dulwich but remained solid defensively and Goggin superbly took his chance in the final stages to steal three points and lift Merstham above their opponents into seventh.

Dulwich came into the game in tremendous form after winning their last five league games and almost took the lead inside the first ten minutes when a defensive mix-up between Craig Vernon and Ian Chatfield saw Jason Pinnock’s effort rebound back off the post. Merstham grew into the match and Dale Marvell curled an effort inches wide of the far post after 15 minutes. Two minutes later they created their best opening as David Smith took advantage of a slip by Dulwich defender Lewis Gonsalves to burst into the box but James Dunn produced a good save to push the winger’s effort away from goal. Sol Pinnock tore apart Merstham’s defence midway through the half and supplied two dangerous crosses on the left wing but Chatfield was on his toes to first deny Jason Pinnock from close range and then the keeper parried Tom Lancaster’s low effort. Although the game was fast and furious, chances were scarce. On the half-hour mark Goggin blazed over after Dulwich failed to clear Smith’s cross and Sol Pinnock fired his late free-kick over the bar in an entertaining but ultimately goalless first-half.

Dulwich attacked with vigour and excitement in the second half as they created chance after chance. Sol Pinnock headed Gerry Gonnella’s free-kick over the bar and Jordan Cheadle cleared Jason Pinnock’s effort from another Gonnella set-piece off the line just minutes after the restart. Chatfield again thwarted Dulwich brilliantly holding onto Sol Pinnock’s fierce effort and Freddie Myers produced a superb last ditch tackle to deny Nyren Clunis on the hour just as he was about to pull the trigger. Dulwich fans starting celebrating after 70 minutes when they saw the net ripple following Dean Carpenter’s looping volley but the effort floated inches over the bar. But it was Merstham players and management who celebrated eight minutes later when against the run of play Marvell broke forward and found Goggin inside the area who swivelled past his marker and slotted the ball beyond Dunn into the far corner. Dulwich almost scored an equaliser in injury-time but Chatfield again came to Merstham’s rescue as he scampered across goal to turn substitute Daniel Morris’ low effort round the post as The Moatsiders held on and claimed their second successive one-nil away victory in the league.

Match Review:  Two first half goals from Harry Ottaway were enough to put Merstham through to the second round and a home tie against Godalming Town. W&H replied within minutes of the start of the second half but Merstham were able to deal with any further threat from the Swans. - Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy
Harry Ottaway helped Merstham progress in the Surrey Senior Cup with two first-half strikes against Walton and Hersham.

Merstham took the lead against the run of play on 20 minutes as Ottaway powerfully headed home Freddie Myers first time cross. The Moatsiders pressed on and doubled their advantage on the stroke of half-time as Wes Goggin kept David Smith’s cross alive inside the area and set-up Ottaway who blasted the ball past goalkeeper David Wilkinson. Ottaway almost netted again before the interval but his low effort rippled the wrong side of the net as Merstham looked in-control of the match.

Walton and Hersham fought back and reduced the deficit just two minutes after the restart as Kenny Ojukwu fired home from Liam Collins’ free-kick. However, Walton and Hersham were forced to play the final twenty minutes with ten men after Victor Kiri limped off the field with the hosts having already made all their substitutions. Merstham comfortably saw out the remainder of the game and kept their last chance of silverware this season alive with their sights now set on Godalming Town in December.

Match Report: David Kirkaldy
Merstham suffered another disappointing early exit in a cup competition after a lacklustre display against local rivals Chipstead. Dominic O’Shea scored the only goal of the match midway through the first half for Chipstead as The Moatsiders failed to make any impression on the game.

Merstham made seven changes after the away victory against Eastbourne Town and gave opportunities to several reserve team players. In contrast, Chipstead played their first team regulars and could have been two goals up in the opening ten minutes. Adam Broomfield met Jason Thompson’s sixth minute corner at the back post but luckily for Merstham the effort deflected off Jordan Cheadle’s back. Four minutes later, O’Shea directed Ray Freeman’s cross-shot onto the crossbar. O’Shea did manage to score shortly afterwards powerfully heading home another Thompson corner after 21 minutes to give the visitors a deserved lead. Merstham could not grasp a foothold in the game and left it until the stroke of half-time to create their first opening. Ben King played Freddie Myers through on the left wing but Saturday’s hero could not repeat his feat as he fired the chance wide.

Chipstead kept up their momentum in the second half but found Ian Chatfield in spectacular form in goal. Chatfield denied Freeman tipping his deflected effort round the post within a couple of minutes of the restart and then Freeman fired over the bar eight minutes later with only the keeper to beat. Merstham created a couple of half chances as Dan Harding lifted the ball over the bar on 56 minutes and two minutes later goalkeeper Martin Grant was called into action for the first time as he produced a good reaction save to tip King’s effort over the bar. The visitors got in-behind Merstham’s defence on a number of occasions and had chances to put the game beyond doubt but Chatfield superbly parried O’Shea fierce volley away from goal and later denied Freeman again from close range. Merstham brought on Elliott Beim, John Doherty and Joe Wornham and created their best opportunity with ten minutes remaining. Russell Banyard pumped a long ball to Doherty at the far post and as he failed to direct his effort goalwards the opportunity fell to Wornham from ten yards and he blazed his effort over the bar leaving Chipstead to progress into the next round. As for Merstham, they will look to their final cup competition of the season for success as they face Walton and Hersham on Tuesday in the Surrey Senior Cup.

Match Review:  A very pleasing result for Merstham who could have scored more as yet again their chances went amiss. Merstham were much tighter in defence with the strength of Craig Vernon a dominant factor which earned him the Non League Paper’s ‘Star Man’ award. With the introduction of Dan Harding and Ben King in the second half Merstham looked far more likely to score however it took defender Freddie Myers to show the Merstham forwards how to score when he netted with just minutes left to play. - Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy
Freddie Myers clinched Merstham’s first away victory of the season after a resilient performance against Eastbourne Town. Myers grabbed his first goal for the club with six minutes remaining as The Moatsiders maintain their unbeaten away record in the league and climb into the top ten for the first time this season.

Both sides were looking to bounce back following home defeats in the FA Trophy last weekend. However, the match started scrappy with Eastbourne looking the most threatening from set plays with Dean Brookes heading over Ashley Robinson’s ninth minute free-kick. Merstham appeared lacklustre for the opening 20 minutes but when Harry Ottaway latched onto Jordan Cheadle’s long ball and struck a low effort wide, the chance spurred on The Moatsiders as they started to impose themselves on their opponents. Two minutes later Wes Goggin turned his marker inside the area and unleashed a ferocious effort which Kieron Thorp parried away and from the resulting corner Tony Reid almost converted in the midst of a goalmouth scramble. Dale Marvell’s 26th minute corner caused more chaos inside the Eastbourne defence as Thorp instinctively denied Ottaway after the striker managed to get his foot to a high ball at the far post and ten minutes later Thorp again denied Ottaway tipping his volley from the edge of the area over the bar. Eastbourne had a great chance to score just before half-time as Peter Cooper met Robinson’s low cross but the striker lifted his effort comfortably over as the teams went in level at the interval.

The second half started in the same vain as the first with Merstham surviving an early scare as Eastbourne clipped the top of the bar four minutes after the restart. The Moatsiders brought on Dan Harding for the start of the second half and the striker injected pace and power into the attack to frighten the Eastbourne defence and Merstham once again carved out chance after chance. Marvell drifted in from the left wing on 60 minutes but saw his effort fly straight into Thorp’s arms. Marvell turned provider a minute later as his cross found Reid unmarked at the far post but the striker headed over the bar. Merstham should have taken the lead after 65 minutes. Harding used his speed and strength to burst through the Eastbourne backline and squared the ball across to Marvell at the far post. Marvell somehow failed to direct his effort goalwards with the goal at his mercy and the ball fell to Reid whose follow-up effort was blocked. For all their second half domination Merstham almost paid the price for not converting their chances as Evan Archibald broke through the visitors defence on 75 minutes but Ian Chatfield produced a brilliant double save to deny Archibald from close range. Merstham looked to FA Trophy hero Ben King for the final ten minutes and when Thorp denied the young striker from eight yards just minutes after coming on it looked as though Merstham would be leaving the south coast with just a point. But moments later, Adam Moriarty picked out Myers who drifted in unnoticed at the far post and showed the strikers how to finish as his first-time volley flew past Thorp into the roof of the net to secure a deserved first victory on the road this season for Merstham.

Match Review:  An appalling first half for the Moatsiders in a ten goal ‘thriller’ which saw them rally in the second half with a ‘Man of the Match’ performance by 17-year-old Ben King.  Merstham trailed at the break by four goals to nil with their defence in total disarray in front of a bemused Ian Chatfield who hardly put a foot wrong. Manager Graeme Banyard made two changes at half time in a desperate bid to stabilise his team but within ten minutes of the restart Merstham were 0-6 down and it looked like it could be a cricket score as the team spirit all but dried up. Then on the hour Banyard replaced Tony Reid with the impressive Ben King and things began to look up. Harry Ottaway opened Merstham’s account in the 76th minute followed quickly by a penalty by Dale Marvell. Then in the dying minutes of the game King scored twice and Merstham saw a glimmer of hope. Unfortunately it was just too late as AFC Sudbury played out time. - Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy
AFC Sudbury survived an epic second half comeback from Merstham after a ten goal thriller in a topsy-turvy cup tie. Merstham rallied back from six down to score four goals in the final 20 minutes but unfortunately time was their biggest enemy as the visitors managed to squeeze through into the next round.

Sudbury made the perfect start and took the lead in the third minute as Tom Webb’s superb first-time volley from a Dave Collins free-kick arrowed into the far corner past a stranded Ian Chatfield. The visitors doubled their advantage eight minutes later as Russell Banyard headed Webb’s corner into his own net at the near post. Merstham carved out a couple of half chances as Aaron Murphy volleyed over the bar following a swift counter attack and Tony Reid headed wide from Dale Marvell’s cross. However, the home side looked in disarray at the back and on 36 minutes found themselves three down as David Wareham and Lee Townrow combined down the left to set up Steve Wareham for a simple finish. Reid forced Sudbury keeper Richard Wilmott into his first save on 42 minutes, after turning his marker inside the area and unleashing a powerful effort at goal. But Steve Wareham struck a killer blow in first-half injury time converting brother David’s cross with a diving header to give the visitors a four goal lead at the interval.

Sudbury continued their dominance in the second half as Webb scored his second of the match on 52 minutes capitalising on Craig Vernon’s poor back pass to slot the ball underneath Chatfield. Three minutes later, Nathan Clarke headed home Webb’s corner for the visitors sixth and a feeling of embarrassment amongst Merstham fans following their sides dismal display in the FA Cup against Alton Town last month. The home side brought on promising young striker Ben King for the final 30 minutes and he made an instant impact setting up Marvell whose first-time volley flew just wide of the far post. Merstham did manage to grab a goal back on 71 minutes as Harry Ottaway headed Marvell’s cross onto the crossbar and Ottaway reacted quickest to convert the rebound. But with 20 minutes remaining surely any thoughts of a comeback was just ridiculous. Four minutes later, the impossible looked possible as the referee awarded Merstham with a penalty after King was obstructed inside the area. Marvell took the spot kick and calmly sent Wilmott the wrong way as the comeback gathered momentum. The home side needed a goal every four minutes to take the game to a replay and on 78 minutes when substitute Freddie Myers burst past two Sudbury players to go through on-goal the signs looked promising for the home faithful. Myers drove his low effort across goal but the effort drifted inches wide of the far post. The match started to fizzle out but then with six minutes remaining King scored out of nowhere with a fantastic drive from outside the area that flew into the top corner to keep Merstham’s faint hopes alive. The home side threw everything at the tiring Sudbury defence and managed to score a fourth in injury time as King headed home a Myers corner. Unfortunately, Merstham’s fight back started just a little too late although the fans will take great pride at the performance from the final 20 minutes and the emergence of a new star.

Match Review:  A disappointing result for a Merstham side who should have taken all three points but for some unlucky finishing and the YMCA keeper Mark Fox, but it was not to be. YM surprisingly took the lead on the half hour with the first of two goals by Brannon O’Neil only to be pegged back when Merstham Skipper We Goggin got on the end of a Dan Harding cross. With neither side gaining an advantage it took the home side until the seventy-fifth minute too take the lead through a fine header from Harry Ottaway. However minutes from the end O’Neil got his second goal and dispelled any hopes of Merstham gaining all three points.- Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy
Merstham suffered late heartache after a determined Horsham YMCA rescued a point with four minutes remaining. The Moatsiders looked to be on their way to a deserved victory following Harry Ottaway’s second half header but late drama saw Brannon O’Neil equalise in the final moments for YMCA.

Merstham welcomed back some familiar faces to the Moatside with Gavin Gordon and last year’s player of the season Craig Vernon playing for Horsham. Gordon who scored eight goals in the final ten games of last season for Merstham almost put the visitors ahead in the sixth minute but Ian Chatfield somehow managed to get his fingertips to his fierce effort. Mark Fox was also on good form between the sticks for Horsham as the keeper pushed Adam Moriarty’s low shot around the post on the slick wet surface. Both sides looked dangerous going forward and after 19 minutes Michael Corbett’s poor headed clearance allowed YMCA’s Joey Collewijn through on-goal but he struck his effort inches wide of the far post. Moments later, Merstham burst forward and were unlucky not to be ahead as David Smith drove his first-time shot across goal but the effort rebounded back off the post. The woodwork came to Horsham’s rescue again on 30 minutes as Jordan Cheadle’s spectacular 30-yard thunderbolt struck the post. Three minutes later the visitors fortuitously took the lead against the run of play as O’Neil’s low shot from the edge of the area deflected through the legs of Aaron Murphy and flew past Chatfield into the net. Merstham quickly put the disappointment behind them and equalised less than a minute later as Wes Goggin managed to get in front of his marker at the near post and poke home Dan Harding’s cross. Harding should have given Merstham the lead in first-half injury time after the striker skilfully turned Vernon inside the area but the striker dragged his shot horribly wide as both sides went into the break level.

The biggest cheer at the start of the second half was saved for Vernon who unsurprisingly became the first player cautioned in the contest when he blasted the ball away after the referee awarded Merstham a free-kick. The game itself turned into a scrappy affair but Merstham managed to take the lead on 75 minutes. Dale Marvell’s pinpoint cross was superbly glanced into the far corner by Ottaway for his first goal for The Moatsiders. Merstham looked to be in control but on 86 minutes their one goal advantage proved not to be enough. After Collewijn saw his thunderous long range effort rebound back off the post, substitute Eddie Walker reacted quickest and his cross found O’Neil at the far post to equalise for Horsham. An unmarked Tony Reid spurred a glorious chance for the home side in injury time as he failed to direct his header from six yards goalwards and although Merstham extend their unbeaten run to three games the result will be viewed as two points dropped.

Dale Marvell struck twice as Merstham recorded a comfortable victory against a lacklustre Corinthian-Casuals.

Merstham were looking to build on the positives following their last minute equaliser against Bognor Regis Town in midweek and signalled their intentions as early as the third minute. Marvell drifted inside from the right wing and struck a fierce shot from 25 yards that flew inches over the bar. Moments later Adam Moriarty picked out an unmarked Michael Corbett with his long ball into the box but the defender headed his effort straight into Danny Bracken’s hands. Casuals did pose a threat on the break as Ian Chatfield was forced into a double save in the sixth minute denying both Jason Turley and Dave Hodges at his near post. But for the majority of the half, Merstham controlled possession in midfield with little pressure from Casuals although they found it difficult to breakdown their opponents. Jordan Cheadle resorted to firing a low effort that drifted inches wide of the far post on 20 minutes. The pressure did finally pay off for Merstham just four minutes later as Tony Reid headed home Cheadle’s pinpoint cross from ten yards to give the home side a deserved lead. The Moatsiders continued to dominate and doubled their advantage shortly before the interval as Marvell’s superbly struck free-kick flew past Bracken into the roof of the net.

The game turned into a scrappy affair in the second half and Casuals turned to former Merstham player Mu Maan on 60 minutes to make an impact and the tactic almost worked as Chatfield denied the striker twice within minutes of coming on. Chatfield had to be alert to dive at the striker’s feet following a scramble inside the penalty area and then the keeper comfortably saved Maan’s low free-kick from the edge of the area. Merstham blew the chance to put the game beyond doubt on 75 minutes as Dan Harding scooped Marvell’s dangerous corner over the bar from six yards. Casuals managed to make the most of Harding’s miss as just one minute later Saheed Sankoh’s perfectly weighted through ball allowed Maan to roll the ball underneath Chatfield to give the visitors a glimmer of hope. But, the comeback was short-lived as Merstham turned on the style three minutes later after a flowing move saw Moriarty and Harding combine to set up Marvell who drove a low effort across Bracken into the far corner and seal Merstham’s second victory of the season.

Match Review:  After a great start with Dale Marvell scoring in the opening minute and Daniel Harding putting them two up on twenty in minutes Merstham seemed to go into their shell and by the hour mark were totally shell-shocked as the Rocks rolled over their visitor’s defence with three goals through Jason Prior, Luke Nightingale and Richard Hudson. Graeme Banyard decided to throw caution to the wind and he sent on the three youngsters who had waited patiently on the bench for their chance. And it was one of these lads, Ben King, that saved Merstham from their third successive defeat when he put the ball home in the 90th minute.- Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy
Ben King snatched an equaliser in the final minute of injury time for Merstham in a six goal thriller against Bognor Regis Town. King, drafted into the first team from the U18s due to injuries, scored in the third minute of added time to steal a point after Bognor clawed their way back from a two goal deficit following a dominate second half display.

Merstham had three youngsters on the bench but managed to make a perfect start by scoring inside the first minute as Dale Marvell drove a low effort past goalkeeper Craig Stoner into the far corner. The Moatsiders doubled their lead 20 minutes later as Tony Reid flicked Adam Moriarty’s pass into the path of Dan Harding and the striker calmly rounded Stoner and tucked the ball into an empty net. Merstham decided to sit back on their advantage and were made to pay as Bognor bounced back on 36 minutes. James Fraser managed to trick his way past Aaron Murphy on the left by-line and pick out an unmarked Jason Prior at the far post to nod home and bring the hosts back into the match. There could have been a quick equaliser for the home side as Luke Nightingale headed James Crane’s cross inches wide but Merstham barely held onto their lead at the interval.

Bognor continued to press forward in the second half and equalised just four minutes after the restart. With his back to goal, Nightingale managed to turn his marker on the edge of the area and rifle home a low effort into the bottom corner. Ian Chatfield again turned out to be Merstham’s hero as he saved a low Prior effort from Richard Hudson’s corner and moments later when Prior headed the ball into the net, the referee ruled the goal out as he judged that the striker impeded Chatfield when he came to collect the cross. However, the pressure proved too much and Bognor fortuitously took the lead after 58 minutes when Hudson’s deflected effort crept past Chatfield into the goal. Chatfield kept Merstham in the game with a fantastic double save on 70 minutes as he clawed away Fraser's curling effort that looked destined for the top corner and then he managed to get back up quickly to block Crane’s close range shot. Graeme Banyard threw the three youngsters on for the last 15 minutes and the decision paid off as King broke Bognor hearts after Stoner parried Adam Moriarty’s 25-yard effort straight into the striker’s path to grab a miraculous point for the visitors with the last kick of the game.

Match Review: Another disappointing result for Merstham as for the second week running they lost 3-0 at home. In the first half Merstham played some fine football, had their chances and were very unlucky to go behind at the close of the half. However in the second half they were simply outclassed by a very strong Met Police side that remain undefeated in all competitions this season. - Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy
Merstham were disappointedly beaten at home for the second successive week as Met Police displayed their promotion credentials. The home side fought valiantly in the first half but Craig Watkins scored on the stroke of half-time to deflate The Moatsiders and James Field added two second half goals to maintain their perfect start to the season. Home fans may have anticipated a difficult afternoon against a side undefeated this season and who have only conceded two goals in all competitions.

The hosts survived an early scare after Watkins wasted a glorious chance heading wide from six yards and Tyrone Smith’s twelve minute free-kick fell straight into Ian Chatfield’s hands. Merstham started to dominate possession and carved their best opening on 28 minutes. Dan Harding pounced onto a Freddie Myers long ball and the striker did well to lift his effort over goalkeeper Dave Smalley but the ball drifted just wide of the far post. The chances dried up and the game looked destined to be goalless at the break. But in stoppage time indecision between Michael Corbett and Bradley Duke in the heart of the Merstham defence allowed Watkins to drive through and slot the ball home off the far post.

Met Police grew in confidence in the second half and looked menacing with every attack. Eddie Smith sidefooted an effort inches wide of the far post and Chatfield needed to be alert to tip Tyrone Smith’s long range effort over the bar. The pressure finally paid off for the visitors after 58 minutes as an unmarked Field headed home Tyrone Smith’s free-kick from five yards. Eddie Smith and Tyrone Smith both struck fierce efforts against the crossbar in consecutive minutes for the Met Police midway through the half as the visitors looked to put the game beyond doubt. But on 74 minutes Merstham substitute Harry Ottaway rose highest to meet another Myers cross but Smalley superbly tipped the ball over the bar at full stretch. It proved to be decisive as two minutes later Field latched onto a long ball and cleverly prodded the ball past Chatfield to display the gulf in-class between the two teams.

As Met Police remain undefeated at the top of the table while Merstham look over their shoulders with only one win under their belt this season.

Match Review: A disappointing result for Merstham who came up against a stronger and more disciplined Leatherhead side who simply outclassed the home side. Tommy Hutchings hit the back of the net in the 25th minute to give Leatherhead the lead and with Merstham unable to make their chances count the score remained 1-0 at the break. Merstham had more chances in the second half but it was Hutchings again who put the ball in Chatfield’s goal in the 52nd minute to make it 2-0. Merstham Manager, Graeme Banyard, made three changes, Ottaway for Reid, Myers for Marvel and Harding for Cheadle but to no avail and it was Leatherhead’s Greg Andrews who put the game beyond Merstham’s reach scoring in the 70th minute. - Sue Austen

Match Review: You could be excused for thinking Graeme Banyard had fielded a different side from the one that played so well against Fleet Town. The starting line-up was the same and that’s where the similarity ended. Whitehawk were by far the more dominant side and if it hadn’t been for the heroics of Merstham keeper Ian Chatfield the Moatsiders would have made the journey home with their tails between the legs. - Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy
Merstham held on to claim a hard fought point on Tuesday night despite Whitehawk’s second half dominance. Ian Chatfield made a number of fantastic saves despite Whitehawk seizing the initiative after Josh Jones cancelled out Billy Marshall’s superb strike.

In a topsy-turvy first-half, both sides created plenty of chances. Wes Tate saw his header cleared off the line from a corner for the hosts while at the other end Jordan Cheadle’s 30 yard free-kick was superbly tipped over by Alan Mansfield. Whitehawk piled on the pressure but failed to convert a four on two break as Scott Kirkwood incredibly missed from close range with only the keeper to beat. Against the run of play Merstham took the lead after 34 minutes as Marshall sensationally lobbed Mansfield from outside the penalty area. The visitors’ joy was short lived as four minutes later Josh Jones headed home Kirkwood’s cross after Merstham failed to clear another corner.

Although the second half was halted for ten minutes following an injury to one of the linesmen, Whitehawk managed to pick up from where they left the previous half. It was only the intervention of Chatfield that kept Whitehawk at bay. First, the keeper reacted instinctively to block Jamie Brotherton’s header from close range. Then he produced a great save to parry Jones’ powerful half-volley and finally the keeper held onto Kirkwood’s low effort that looked destined for the bottom corner. Merstham’s best chance of the half came when Tony Reid glanced his header just wide of the far post from David Smith’s cross. Whitehawk pressed forward for a winner but Chatfield again denied the home side pushing a Jones cross that looked to be going over his head into the net over the bar as Merstham clung on to an unlikely draw.

Match Review: After going behind in the sixth minute when Adam Moriarty gave away a penalty, neatly converted by the Blues’ Darren Wheeler, Merstham took the game by the scruff of the neck spearheaded by a superb hat-trick by striker Billy Marshall. Further goals from Tony Reid and Daniel Harding gave the Moatsiders a well deserved victory against a formidable Fleet Town side. - Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy
Billy Marshall’s hat-trick secured Merstham their first victory of the season after a seven goal thriller against Fleet Town. The hosts bounced back - after Fleet’s Darren Wheeler tucked home a sixth minute penalty - with three goals in eight first-half minutes as the Moatsiders finally discovered their killer touch to cruise to a comfortable victory.

The match did not initially go to plan as Fleet dominated possession early-on and were awarded a penalty after Adam Moriarty tripped Wesley Harrison. Wheeler confidently stepped up and sent Ian Chatfield the wrong way to give the visitors an early lead. Merstham fought back but lacked creativity in the final third. All that changed on 25 minutes as Marshall flicked Dale Marvell’s free-kick past goalkeeper Chris Baker and off the far post for the equaliser. The home side’s confidence lifted and five minutes later Tony Reid prodded home David Smith’s dangerous cross at the near post as Merstham took the lead. And just 90 seconds later Marshall superbly lifted Smith’s long ball over Baker to spark wild celebrations amongst players and supporters around the Moatside. It could have been worse for a shell-shocked Fleet but Daniel Palfrey cleared Smith’s low effort off the line as the ball was trickling towards the goal.

Fleet started to fight back in the second half and grabbed a lifeline on 57 minutes. Johnnie Dyer latched onto a long ball and took advantage of an oncoming Chatfield in no man’s land to lob the ball into the goal. But signs of a comeback were quickly dashed as just three minutes later Marshall skilfully sidestepped a challenge inside the penalty area and tucked his low effort right into the bottom corner. Daniel Harding added to Fleet’s woes in injury time lifting the ball over Baker to round off an excellent performance and send the fans home ecstatic.

Match Review: You can see the headlines in the Alton local press stating ‘Alton Towers over a humbled Merstham’. And that’s just what happened, Merstham just weren’t good enough. With two different strikers up front Manager Graeme Banyard hoped to improve on the team’s inability to put the ball in the back of the net however nothing changed as the near misses continue. It took only ten minutes for Alton Town to stamp their authority on the game through Ian Humble. Merstham battled on but to no avail and 15 minutes into the second half Alton Town doubled their lead with Humble grabbing a second. When Merstham finally got on the score sheet they couldn’t even score it themselves as it was awarded as a Tom Brown own goal. Banyard has a tough time ahead of him as the team travel to Sittingbourne on Tuesday evening in the league. - Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy
Merstham disappointedly crashed out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle after defeat against lower league Alton Town. Ian Humble struck early in each half to put the Wessex Premier side into the next round while The Moatsiders continued to struggle in front of goal.

Alton made the perfect start in this frenetic encounter and took the lead in the tenth minute. Carl Saunders caught Merstham unaware with a short free-kick and Ian Humble blasted a 25-yard effort through a crowd of players into the goal. After failing to score from open play in their two league games, Graeme Banyard gave a start to Daniel Harding, Louis Sprosen and Harry Ottaway and the latter two combined well on 16 minutes. Sprosen lifted the ball through to Ottaway but keeper Craig Atkinson produced a brilliant save to deny the striker from close range. Atkinson continued to impress in the Alton goal after pushing a long range David Smith effort round the post and saving Dale Marvell’s fierce shot at his near post. The keeper even rode his luck at times after Michael Corbett saw his header cleared off the line from Marvell’s corner. Merstham spurred a great opportunity on 37 minutes as Harding managed to chase down Atkinson’s clearance but unluckily for the visitors the ball diverted onto the post. Harding continued to chase the loose ball and struck a follow-up effort onto the bar to sum up the visitors inept ability in front of goal.

Alton relieved to hear the half-time whistle then doubled their advantage eight minutes after the restart. Simba Miambo drove through two challenges on the right wing and squared the ball back to Humble inside the area and the striker fired home past two defenders covering on the line. Billy Marshall, Tony Reid and Freddie Myers came on as Merstham piled forward but Alton clung onto their lead although they almost converted into their own net after Smith’s low cross was turned onto the crossbar. Merstham kept pumping balls into the box and the tactic paid off as Tom Brown converted a Freddie Myers cross into his own net to give the visitors a lifeline with ten minutes remaining. Reid had the chance to save Merstham’s blushes in the dying seconds but the striker headed Marshall’s cross straight into Atkinson’s hands from six yards as Alton survived the onslaught to progress into the next round.

Match Review: A disappointing result for Merstham in the first home game of the season. Yet again it was the failure to put away chances that let the Moatsiders down against an impressive Chatham Town side. Not what the Moatsiders wanted ahead of Saturday’s trip to Wessex Premier League side Alton Town in the Preliminary Round of the FA Cup. - Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy

Merstham suffered defeat for the first time this season as a well-organised Chatham Town side maintained their perfect start. The Moatsiders made life difficult for themselves as Joe Fuller capitalised on a defensive mix-up to gift the visitors the first half lead and Callum O’Shea added to Chatham’s advantage after the break to put the game beyond reach.

In an end-to-end contest, it was the hosts who made a positive start and came closest when Tony Reid headed Wes Goggin’s cross narrowly wide in the sixth minute. At the other end, Ian Chatfield kept out O’Shea after the striker intercepted Michael Corbett’s header back towards goal. Reid had another fantastic opportunity ten minutes later after goalkeeper James Tedder failed to clear a long ball on the edge of his area but his 25-yard first time hit sailed wide. Chatham started to dictate play and fired a warning shot when Jason Barton headed inches wide from O’Shea’s cross.  But, disaster struck on the half-hour mark as the visitors took the lead. Corbett was guiding the ball out of play when Chatfield decided to come and collect the ball. The two players fell over each other on the by-line allowing O'Shea to pick up the loose ball and find Fuller who calmly finished into the empty net. Merstham pushed forward as half-time approached with David Smith causing all sorts of problems down the right wing, drove past Barton but saw his fierce low shot saved by Tedder’s legs at his near post.

Chatham regained their dominance and five minutes into the half a one-two between Brad Potter and O’Shea allowed Gary Ward a shot on-goal but the visiting captain found the side netting from an acute angle. However, the visitors managed to double their advantage on 54 minutes after a swift counter-attack ended with O’Shea side stepping Jordan Cheadle’s challenge on the edge of the area and blasting the ball into the roof of the net. Merstham had a great opportunity to get back into the game less than three minutes after the restart but Bradley Duke somehow headed Dale Marvell’s cross wide from five yards with the goal at his mercy. The hosts lost their momentum shortly after Craig Dunne left the field injured but with 15 minutes remaining Rob Sheridan put Daniel Harding through on-goal for a glimmer of hope. The striker initially did well to round Tedder but instead of shooting he decided to pull the ball across for Smith. By the time the winger controlled the ball the chance had disappeared as he was crowded out. A Cheadle free-kick from 20 yards crept inches over in the final minute but by then any come back was too late as Chatham were in-control and deservedly took the three points.

As for Merstham, they will look to find their killer touch in the FA Cup away against lower league Alton Town on Saturday to kick-start their season.

Match Review: A positive start for Merstham as the new season kicked off and despite being a draw it was the Moatsiders who dominated play throughout much of the game. They could have quite easily scored four or more if the had taken their chances a couple of which should easily have been put away. Debutant Jordan Cheadle, signed during the close season, opened the scoring for Merstham with a well taken penalty 15 minutes into the second half. However Whyteleafe pulled one back through Alec Brown and the game finished all square. - Johnny Moatside

Match Report: David Kirkaldy
Merstham were denied an opening day victory after a battling display by local rivals Whyteleafe. Jordan Cheadle gave The Moatsiders the lead from the penalty spot just past the hour but a string of good saves from Rob O’Hara kept Whyteleafe in the game and allowed Alec Brown to scramble home a late equaliser.

Merstham started brightly and should have been ahead inside five minutes. Tony Reid flicked on Wes Goggin’s high ball to set Billy Marshall through on goal but O’Hara superbly tipped the striker’s effort round the post. Whyteleafe grew in confidence as the half progressed. Stephane Gnamore narrowly flicked Chris O’Flaherty’s cross wide on 18 minutes and Merstham anxiously cleared Daryl Coleman’s free-kick on the half-hour following a goalmouth scramble.

Merstham stepped up their performance in the second half with Marshall looking lively throughout as the striker was always on the shoulder of the last defender waiting for his opportunity. Like the first half he had an opportunity minutes after the start but again O’Hara denied the striker blocking a close range toe-punt. However, Merstham’s pressure finally paid off on 61 minutes as O’Hara brought down Reid inside the area and Cheadle confidently struck the penalty past the keeper into the bottom left corner. Merstham had the chance to put the game beyond reach on 73 minutes as Goggin ran through on-goal and poked his effort beyond the oncoming O’Hara but unfortunately the effort drifted the wrong side of the near post. Then disaster struck two minutes later as Bradley Drake powerfully burst through into the area, chipped the ball over Cheadle’s head, and found Brown running through into the box. The midfielder miscued his first-time volley off the top of his shin and the ball somehow looped over Chatfield into the corner of the goal for an unlikely equaliser. The Moatsiders aggrieved by the scoreline pushed forward in search of a winner in the final ten minutes but found O’Hara in terrific form. First, he denied Goggin’s low volley from 10 yards, then a late Cheadle free-kick and finally in injury time the keeper superbly tipped over substitute Daniel Harding’s 25-yard thunderbolt that looked destined for the top corner.

Although Merstham had to settle for a point they will look at a positive start and left the fans excited to see an adventurous attacking side for the season ahead.
