Match Report:
David Kirkaldy
Merstham’s season came to a faltering end after Hythe Town staged a late
fightback to ensure they finished above the Moatsiders in eighth place.
Joe Holland opened the scoring for Merstham after 40 minutes but Dave
Cook struck inside the final five minutes as Hythe finished one place
above the Moatsiders in the league table and ahead only on goal
difference. Hayden Bird decided to give a few of his fringe players a
chance as Holland, Justin Hemmings, James Fray, Elliott Jones and Andre
McCollin all made an appearance in the starting line-up.
Both sides created early chances as Hythe’s Brendan Cass saw his header
pushed away by Merstham keeper David Wilkinson while at the other end
McCollin blasted wide after latching onto a long ball over the visitors
defence. Hythe begun to assert their authority in midfield but could not
create a clear cut opening as James Dryden headed Aaron Lacy’s cross
over from 12 yards and moments later Cook’s fierce 20-yard effort sailed
over the crossbar. Then against the run of play, Merstham took the lead
five minutes before the interval when Holland nipped ahead of Tom
Parkinson at the near post to convert Rob Carter’s low cross and score
his first goal for the Moatsiders. |

Merstham’s five game
winning streak came to a frustrating end after they were held by
Eastbourne Town. Roscoe Dsane’s superb solo effort gave Merstham the
lead on 52 minutes but Matt Ferdinando equalised 14 minutes later for
the hosts in a lifeless end of season clash with both teams
demonstrating they had nothing left to play for. The Moatsiders welcomed
back fan favourite Fabio Saraiva into the starting line-up but prior to
kick off came an announcement that the game would be delayed by up to 15
minutes as Merstham had to change their kit. The referee forced the
visitors to change from their traditional amber colours to Eastbourne’s
red away strip as the colour was deemed to be too similar to their
opponent’s yellow and blue shirts.

Match Report:
David Kirkaldy
Merstham sensationally recovered twice against local rivals Whyteleafe
to keep their winning streak alive with their fifth consecutive victory.
In an eventful game, Merstham were lethargic for the opening hour as two
goals from Ian Selley put Leafe in a commanding position despite former
Moatsider Adam Broomhead’s sending off midway through the second half.
However, two goals in seven minutes from Adam Moriarty and Liam Wright
turned the game around for Merstham to claim an unbelievable victory
over their struggling neighbours.
Whyteleafe fighting for survival at the bottom of the league table
started with Omar Folkes, Louis Clark and Broomhead who were looking to
prove themselves against their former team mates. However, it was
Merstham who created the first chance after 20 minutes when Gunner
powerfully headed Peter Wedgeworth’s free-kick but Leafe goalkeeper Paul
Smith gathered the effort at the second attempt. Both teams struggled to
cope with the difficult playing surface due to the heavy overnight rain
as Folkes demonstrated when he lashed a 20-yard volley out for a
throw-in. However, a piece of individual brilliance saw Whyteleafe take
the lead on 33 minutes when Selley saw his stunning free-kick sail over
the wall and curl past the outstretched hand of Wilkinson into the top
left hand corner. The Moatsiders equalised on the stroke of half-time
when Smith pushed out another dangerous Wedgeworth free-kick but this
time Gunner quickly pounced on the loose ball to slot the rebound home
from close range. |

Match Report:

Roscoe Dsane
scored twice as Merstham courageously came from behind against Worthing
to record their fourth successive league victory. Ryan McBride put the
visitors in the lead midway through the first half but they failed to
capitalise on their dominance and allowed Merstham back into the contest
when Dsane equalised from the penalty spot after the interval. The
momentum of the game shifted and the Moatsiders grabbed the elusive
winner in the final five minutes when Dsane pounced on a defensive
mistake to spark rapturous celebrations amongst the home faithful.
Worthing’s frustration boiled over in stoppage time when Sam O’Reegan
was sent off after being shown a second yellow card. Merstham reverted
back to using Dsane as a lone striker but the hosts found themselves
immediately on the back foot in the opening two minutes. Tom Lawley
dispossessed full back Peter Wedgeworth on the edge of the area but the
midfielder dragged his low shot wide of the far post. Merstham’s first
opportunity came after 19 minutes when Worthing’s Glen Woodburn
attempted to clear Adam Moriarty’s low cross from the right and the ball
ricocheted off Elliott Jones but drifted agonisingly past the near post.
Woodburn was again involved three minutes later when his short back pass
put his own goalkeeper Alan Mansfield in trouble with Dsane charging him
down. Mansfield miscued his clearance but the keeper avoided further
embarrassment by chasing down the loose ball and clearing the danger.
Worthing started to dictate proceedings and took the lead on 27 minutes
when Tom Manton’s pass sliced through the middle of Merstham’s defence
to McBride who slotted a low effort past keeper David Wilkinson from 15
yards. The visitors continued to dominate with Merstham barely getting
out of their own half and Wilkinson needed to react quickly to block
Lawley’s improvised flick after O’Reegan headed Darren Budd’s corner
towards goal. Moments later, Lawley beat Wilkinson with a fierce low
drive across goal but Rob Carter was in the right place to clear the
effort off the line and keep the Moatsiders within touching distance
going into the interval. Merstham came out
rejuvenated in the second half and created their first threatening
effort five minutes after the restart when David Graves met Wedgeworth’s
corner with a looping header but the effort went wide. The Moatsiders
continued to apply pressure and were awarded a penalty on 68 minutes
when Matt Hurley clipped Liam Wright from behind after the winger used
his scintillating pace to burst into the area from the left wing. Dsane
converted the spot kick into the bottom left corner for his first goal
in four games to put Merstham back in contention for a victory that
looked out of their reach at half-time. The Moatsiders new found
tenacity saw them venture forward in search of a winner and they were
rewarded with four minutes remaining. Dsane pounced onto Hurley’s poorly
directed header towards his own goal and the striker took the ball
around Mansfield who had rushed quickly off his line before lifting the
ball into an empty net. Fears of a late equaliser were alleviated
slightly when O’Reegan was shown a red card following a second booking
for a late challenge on Sam Tucknott as the Moatsiders held off a late
onslaught to claim a fourth successive victory for the first time in
over three years. |

Match Report:

Merstham discovered three is a magic number as they recorded a third successive victory despite scoring all three goals against Sittingbourne. Andre McCollin scored twice to put the Moatsiders in control before the break but a determined Sittingbourne rallied back in the second half when Rob Carter’s own goal set-up a nervy final twenty minutes. Merstham went into the match as overwhelming favourites following victories against Corinthian-Casuals and Whitstable Town while their opponents were free-falling down the table after going nine games without a win. The Moatsiders reverted back to a traditional 4-4-2 formation pairing strikers McCollin and Roscoe Dsane together for the first time and the combination proved deadly inside the opening ten minutes. Dsane chased down Sam Tucknott’s long clearance following a Sittingbourne corner and the striker slid the ball across the penalty area to McCollin whose first-time effort with the outside of his right boot past curled away from keeper Adam Woodhead into the far corner. Sittingbourne responded well to going behind early as Robert Lyall headed Anthony Hogg’s corner over the crossbar and Chris Edwards 25-yard screamer flew just wide of David Wilkinson’s post. Merstham almost doubled their lead on the half hour mark when Dsane poked Peter Wedgeworth’s low free-kick just wide of Woodhead’s near post but the Moatsiders persistence finally paid off on the stroke of half-time. Wedgeworth and Liam Wright combined down the left wing to find McCollin on the edge of the area in plenty of space and the striker sensationally curled a sensational effort past the outstretched hand of Woodhead into the net off the far post to hand Merstham a two-goal advantage at the interval. The Moatsiders grabbed the early initiative in the second half but were denied by Woodhead after the keeper blocked Dsane’s one-on-one effort with his legs and comfortably caught a James Evans 30-yard drive. Merstham almost extended their lead on the hour mark after a cleverly worked Wedgeworth set-piece saw Dsane set-up Tucknott who drove a low first-time volley across goal but Lyall was waiting on the goal line to clear the effort away from danger. This proved to be crucial as seven minutes later Sittingbourne were handed a fortunate lifeline when Carter was caught unaware by Joe Nwoko’s cross-shot as he diverted the ball into his own net off his thigh. The hosts pressed forward in search of an equaliser and in the final minute of the ninety Hogg’s quickly taken free-kick saw Nwoko whip in a dangerous cross from the right but Elie Kayembe’s header flew wide of the far post. Sittingbourne still had time for one last Hogg corner in the third minute of stoppage time and even sent Woodhead forward. Merstham cleared their lines and found Tucknott streaming forward with an open goal in front of him but with Sittingbourne players chasing him down the winger fired a tired effort agonisingly wide with the final chance of the game. |

Match Report:
David Kirkaldy
Merstham courageously fought back to snatch a dramatic injury time winner as George Benner’s own goal ended Whitstable Town’s five game winning streak. James Evans spectacular volley put the Moatsiders ahead but Dane Luchford and Stuart Vahid converted two Jake Beecroft set-pieces to gift the advantage to the visitors before the interval. Fabio Saraiva equalised from the penalty spot before a topsy-turvy finale saw three red cards and Benner convert Roscoe Dsane’s cross into his own net in stoppage time to hand Merstham the most unlikely of victories. The Moatsiders recalled David Graves and Elliott Jones to the starting line-up replacing Rob Carter and skipper Adam Moriarty who dropped to the bench alongside top goalscorer Dsane. A special red ball was used for this weekend’s Ryman League matches due to Sport Relief although the ball only lasted 90 seconds as Luchford launched the ball out of the ground and into the trees behind the Church End stand. Merstham made a perfect start when Evans caught his first-time volley perfectly and the 25-yard drive took visiting goalkeeper Dave King by surprise as the ball flew into the net in the seventh minute. The Moatsiders created a couple of good opportunities to double their lead but James Fray directed a 30-yard effort inches wide of the far post and Saraiva struck a free-kick just over the top right hand corner. However, disaster soon struck when the visitors equalised after 24 minutes when Luchford bundled home Beercroft’s low driven free-kick from the halfway line as the momentum quickly shifted in Whitstable’s favour. Vahid had a goal ruled out for offside on 33 minutes before he made amends five minutes later when the striker managed to get in front of Dean Gunner to powerfully thump a header past David Wilkinson following a Beercroft corner. Gunner was substituted moments later much to the defender’s frustration who reacted angrily by taking off his shirt and confronting manager Hayden Bird on the touchline. It could have been worse for Merstham as the visitors continued to dominate aerially but Benner could only head another dangerous corner straight into Wilkinson’s arms as the Moatsiders somehow managed to hold out to half-time. Merstham continued to look lethargic after the interval but the game turned again on 56 minutes when the referee awarded a penalty to the Moatsiders after Whitstable’s James Morrish clumsily barged into the back of Elliott Jones. Saraiva confidently despatched the spot kick into the bottom left corner despite King diving in the right direction. The game became ill-tempered when the referee decided to send a player off from each side in quick succession. James Fray was the first to go on 78 minutes following a dangerous tackle on Gary Sayer by the left touchline. Then six minutes later Whitstable’s Laurence Harvey was shown a straight red after pulling back substitute Dsane with the striker bearing down on-goal. Both sides searched for a winner in the latter stages but in the second minute of injury time Merstham broke on the counter with Dsane galloping forward from the halfway line. Dsane glided past Sayer into the penalty area where his low cross was met by Benner who slid in and diverted the ball past King into his own net to the jubilation and disbelief of the home fans. There was still time for Merstham’s Andre McCollin to be shown his marching orders after the striker received a second yellow card but the Moatsiders held on to claim back-to-back home victories for the first time since the end of November. |

Match Report:
David Kirkaldy
Fabio Saraiva’s first-half strike sunk Corinthian-Casuals to help Merstham record their first away victory in three games. Saraiva emphatically blasted a first-time effort that flew past goalkeeper Adam Peck after 15 minutes following good work by Andre McCollin to keep hold of possession during a Merstham counter attack. Casuals rallied back in the second half but could not find a breakthrough after keeper David Wilkinson thwarted David Ocquaye’s close range header by pushing the effort onto the crossbar. The Moatsiders recalled skipper Adam Moriarty and right back Aaron Fray into the starting line-up while Rob Carter partnered Dean Gunner for the first time in the heart of the defence. Merstham started brightly and should have taken the lead inside the opening two minutes when McCollin managed to clip his cross from the left by-line to an unmarked Sam Tucknott but he blazed his effort over from six yards. The visitor’s dominance finally paid off on the quarter-hour when McCollin majestically controlled Tucknott’s long ball out of the air and the striker laid the ball across for Saraiva who fired a vicious shot across Peck into the roof of the net for an early lead. Merstham almost doubled their advantage on 32 minutes when Peck rushed outside his area to head clear a James Evans long ball with McCollin again chasing and the rebound fell to Saraiva who drove a low first-time effort from 35-yards but the ball drifted the wrong side of the post. Casuals best chance of the first-half fell to Ocquaye five minutes before half-time after he controlled a Matt Ellis corner on his chest but the striker blasted his effort out of the ground much to the frustration of the home fans. There was a role reversal after the interval as Casuals looked dangerous every time they ventured forward. Danny Green tried an ambitious overhead kick eight minutes after the restart following another dangerous Ellis set-piece but the effort flew towards the corner flag although Wilkinson was soon called upon to make two outstanding saves. Firstly, the keeper tipped Ocquaye’s header onto the crossbar after the striker managed to glide in-between two defenders to flick-on Francois Gabbidon’s long throw at the near post. Then from the resulting Ellis corner, Wilkinson needed to be on his toes as he back-pedalled across his goal line to push the set-piece onto the roof of the net with the ball seemingly looping over his head towards the far corner. Merstham made a double substitution on 75 minutes with James Fray and Elliott Jones replacing wingers Tucknott and Liam Wright and the changes almost made an immediate impact. Fray’s pinpoint through ball put Roscoe Dsane through on-goal and he managed to take the ball around Peck but after being forced wide of the goal no-one had ventured into the area to convert the striker’s low cross. Casuals started to run out of ideas and with the clock ticking down the hosts looked at their most dangerous through set-plays. Merstham kept their focus with Gunner sniffing out the danger to the majority of the attacks to secure Merstham’s second clean sheet in three games and revive their pursuit for a place inside the top ten. |

Match Report:
David Kirkaldy
Merstham suffered another tale of away day heartbreak after showing
great tenacity to take the lead against title-chasing Whitehawk in a
dramatic finale. Liam Wright looked like he had snatched a victory for
the Moatsiders with just eight minutes remaining but strikes from Lee
Newman and Joe Keehan turned the game in Whitehawk’s favour to maintain
their quest for promotion.
Merstham faced a daunting trip to the south
coast against a side who had won their previous four league games and
the visitors had to cope without their skipper Adam Moriarty who was
missing his first game of the season.
Manager Hayden Bird decided to freshen up the starting eleven as Andre
McCollin and James Fray replaced first team regulars Roscoe Dsane and
Sam Tucknott who both dropped to the bench.
On a glorious sunny afternoon by the seaside, the first-half descended
into a gloomy proposition for the Moatsiders with the visitors having to
rely on their goalkeeper David Wilkinson to keep them in the contest.
Wilkinson pushed Sam Gargan’s low driven free-kick away for a corner on
the half-hour and then the shot stopper produced a heroic save to deny
Gargan again just before the interval when the striker’s fierce volley
from ten yards saw the keeper majestically leap to tip the ball over the
bar with his fingertips.
Merstham responded early in the second half when Fabio Saraiva’s 30-yard
long range effort flew just over the bar five minutes after the restart.
Whitehawk’s dominance came back into the forefront but Gargan was again
denied on the hour mark when his looping header was cleared off the line
by Merstham defender Dean Gunner. The Moatsiders went straight up the
other end as McCollin managed to barge his way past two defenders but
unfortunately dragged his effort wide with only the keeper to beat. Then
came the turning point on 67 minutes when the referee blew his whistle
for a foul after Gunner tugged on Newman’s shirt on the edge of the
area. After consulting with his assistant, the referee awarded Whitehawk
a penalty but Wilkinson again denied the hosts by saving and keeping
hold of Paul Armstrong’s spot kick low down to his left. Merstham
continued to frustrate their opponents and the hosts were left stunned
on 83 minutes when Wright’s low 25-yard drive nestled into the bottom
right corner to put the Moatsiders within sight of an unlikely victory.
However, Whitehawk responded emphatically as less than two minutes later
Newman managed to get on the end of a Josh James long ball to fire past
Wilkinson into the roof of the net. The momentum had now swung towards
the hosts and they grabbed the winner on 88 minutes following a long
throw-in that saw Keehan poke a low effort into the bottom right corner
to leave the Moatsiders devastated after a thrilling finale. |

Match Report:
David Kirkaldy
Roscoe Dsane’s first-half strike was enough to claim a hard-earned victory for Merstham against struggling Walton Casuals. There were few chances in this cagey encounter but the Moatsiders put on a stubborn defensive display to frustrate their opponents for much of the game. Both sides were looking to improve after suffering defeats in their previous two matches but there was initially little to choose between the teams after a scrappy opening period. Merstham created a great opening in the ninth minute when Fabio Saraiva ran onto Liam Wright’s cross but the midfielder snatched at his volley and fell kindly into the arms of Casuals keeper Gareth Williams. There was plenty of industry on display from both sides but with a distinct lack of quality or adventure going forward until the Moatsiders broke the deadlock on 27 minutes following a cleverly worked short corner routine. Saraiva played a one-two with Sam Tucknott and drove a low cross towards the near post where Dsane converted from close range despite the striker having to take two swings at the ball. Merstham continued to apply the pressure till the interval but Dsane saw a fierce effort superbly tipped over the crossbar by the fingertips of Williams while in stoppage time Peter Wedgeworth’s toe-poke brushed into the side-netting to keep the visitors within touching distance at half-time. Casuals made their intentions clear within the opening minute of the second half as Kwabena Agyei tried to lob keeper David Wilkinson from 30 yards. Although the effort never threatened Merstham’s goal, the visitors looked to be more adventurous when they ventured forward and created their best chance of the match ten minutes after the restart. Danny Fernandez cleverly spun past defender Rob Carter on the edge of the area before unleashing a ferocious drive at Wilkinson who was fortunate to block the shot using his left shoulder to deflect the effort up into the air and then the keeper reacted quickest to catch the ball at the second attempt. The Moatsiders continued to ride their luck on the hour mark when a David Graves clearance fell to Casuals striker Adam Fletcher ten yards out but he dragged his first-time volley horribly wide. Merstham spurned a great chance to double their lead on 66 minutes when Wright lifted an anxious Moatside crowd after darting past three Casual defenders but his finish failed to match his spectacular run as his low effort drifted wide of the far post. Wilkinson was again called into action five minutes to deny substitute Glenn Stanley from close range following a quickly taken Craig Lewington free-kick. The same two combined from the resulting corner but Stanley could only head Lewington’s dangerous set-piece over from eight yards. Merstham should have put the game beyond doubt in the final five minutes when Elliott Jones somehow crashed Wright’s low cross from ten yards against the bar with the goal gapping in front of him but the Moatsiders managed to survive a late onslaught to seal the points. |

Merstham suffered late heartbreak as Burgess Hill Town recovered from a goal down in the final twenty minutes to snatch an unlikely victory. Dan Clarke’s ninth-minute header gave the hosts an early lead before two goals either side of the break from Liam Wright put the Moatsiders in control. However, Merstham crumbled after Kenny Pogue equalised on 70 minutes and in a frenetic finale Pat Harding grabbed a last-ditch winner on the stroke of ninety minutes. The hosts were quickly into the ascendency when Tyrone Berry’s fifth minute pinpoint cross from the left was powerfully headed home by Clarke to give third from bottom Burgess Hill a dream start. Merstham settled down into the contest by utilising both wingers and almost equalised on 22 minutes after Wright was brought down on the left by-line. James Evans whipped a dangerous free-kick over the head of goalkeeper Joel Harding but unluckily for the Moatsiders the effort rebounded off the far post and came back across the face of the goal before being cleared away. Merstham continued to press forward but were denied by Joel Harding who comfortably saved Aaron Fray’s deflected effort and then he denied Roscoe Dsane at his near post after the striker dispossessed defender Marc Munday. The Moatsiders created their best chance on 40 minutes after Dsane chased down Fray’s long ball and lobbed a first-time effort over an oncoming Harding but unfortunately the striker also lifted his effort over the crossbar. Finally, Merstham managed to breakthrough on the stroke of half-time when defender David Graves drove from the halfway line towards the Burgess Hill penalty area. Graves superbly picked out Wright on the edge of the area and the winger drove a low left-footed effort across goal into the bottom right corner to equalise for the Moatsiders heading into the interval. Merstham continued to dominate in the second half and took the lead on 65 minutes when a James Evans corner was cleared to Wright who stuck a volley from 25 yards through a crowd of players into the net off the far post. It looked as though the Moatsiders would stroll to a comfortable victory but for the second game in succession they became complacent in possession and five minutes later they allowed Burgess Hill back into the game. Adam Moriarty lost the ball to Pogue inside his own half and a clever one-two with Pat Harding ended with the striker firing a fierce low half-volley past keeper David Wilkinson into the bottom corner. The momentum had now shifted to the hosts who kept Merstham pegged inside their own half for the final ten minutes. Max Miller should have scored when he lifted his one-on-one effort with Wilkinson over the keeper but the ball bounced just wide of the post. Wilkinson did redeem himself two minutes later when he kept out Pat Harding’s volley from close range. However, Merstham’s resistance finally gave way on 89 minutes after they failed to clear Fred Foreman’s corner. Munday’s low deflected shot on the edge of the area fell to Pat Harding and although Wilkinson saved his initial effort the rebound fell kindly for the striker who slotted the ball past a defender on the line to gift Burgess Hill their first home victory this year. |

Stones’ skipper Graeme Andrews gave the visitors the lead just twelve minutes in but from then on until the last ten minutes of the game it was the Moatsiders who looked the more dominant levelling through Fabio Saraiva in the 77th minute. Maidstone regained the lead two minutes later through Baff Addae and leading scorer Shaun Welford made it 3-1 just minutes later. Match Report:
David Kirkaldy
Merstham threw away the chance to cause a huge upset against promotion
chasing Maidstone United. Graeme Andrews gave the visitors a first-half
lead before Fabio Saraiva forced an equaliser for Merstham with thirteen
minutes to play. However, the Moatsiders failed to take advantage of the
shift in momentum and allowed Maidstone to grab three goals in the
remaining time.
The visitors started strongly and following a succession of early
corners Alex Waugh headed Tommy Osborne’s second minute set piece over
the bar. Merstham’s first opportunity came on seven minutes when Adam
Moriarty’s deep cross was met by Roscoe Dsane but the striker volleyed
wildly over. However, it was Maidstone who made the early breakthrough
after twelve minutes when another dangerous Osborne corner saw Andrews
chest the ball down unopposed before volleying past David Wilkinson from
ten yards. The visitors began to dictate possession and they had a great
opportunity to double their lead on 35 minutes when Waugh chased Alex
Flisher’s long ball and lobbed the ball over Wilkinson but David Greaves
managed to clear the effort away before the ball trickled over the line.
Moments later, Merstham almost equalised when Saraiva let fly from 20
yards but unfortunately his effort clipped the outside of the left hand
post. Maidstone continued to look a threat every time they ventured
forward and when Waugh knocked the ball past Wilkinson in injury time
for Buff Addae to chase it looked like the visitors were going to extend
their lead but the striker dragged his low effort wide of the far post.
After their lucky escape at the end of the first-half, Merstham came out
rejuvenated after the break and were unlucky not to equalise on 51
minutes after Dsane was denied twice. Firstly, the striker lifted the
ball over oncoming keeper John Whitehouse but Andrews managed to head
the ball off the line and then from the rebound Dsane saw his volley
crash against the post from an acute angle. Tragedy struck on the hour
mark when play was stopped for over five minutes after Maidstone’s
Michael Phillips suffered a serious knee injury and had to be replaced
by debutant Karl Murray. Once the game restarted, Merstham kept up the
pressure on their opponents but Dsane was again denied on 66 minutes
after his fierce effort was parried away by Whitehouse and Saraiva saw
his follow-up effort blocked. The Moatsiders finally equalised after 77
minutes when substitute Dean Gunner whipped in a deep cross on the right
and an unmarked Saraiva guided his header into the far corner. However,
less than two minutes later Merstham switched off from a Flisher long
throw as Addae powered his way through a crowded area to bundle
Maidstone back into the lead. Things got even worse for the hosts on 81
minutes when Flisher’s through ball saw Shaun Welford advance into the
area and strike a fierce effort past Wilkinson to gift the visitors a
two-goal advantage. Merstham cut the deficit back down to one with just
four minutes remaining when Saraiva’s deep free-kick into the box saw
Liam Wright ghost in-between two defenders and flick his effort into the
net from close range. There was still hope for a Merstham equaliser when
the referee signalled five minutes of stoppage time but this optimism
faded when Flisher was left one-on-one with Wilkinson in the final
minute and although the midfielder’s first effort was saved he converted
the rebound to clinch a dramatic victory. |

Match Report:
David Kirkaldy
Merstham battled to a narrow victory over Godalming Town despite playing with ten men for over an hour. Roscoe Dsane scored the only goal midway through the first-half but the game will be remembered for a ridiculous sending off to Merstham’s James Evans who was shown a second yellow card for taking a free-kick too early. Merstham named an unchanged side following their courageous defeat against league leaders Bognor Regis Town but the hosts had to survive an early scare in the second minute. Ben Edwards dispossessed Justin Hemmings on the edge of the area but fortunately for Merstham his central defensive partner David Graves threw himself in the way to deflect the winger’s effort away for a corner. The Moatsiders grew into the contest despite the wet and heavy conditions as Sam Tucknott had the first effort in anger on 13 minutes firing a low 20-yard effort straight into Godalming keeper Jake Somerville’s hands. Merstham kept pressing and took the lead seven minutes later following a superb passing exchange in midfield. Fabio Saraiva’s perfectly weighted through ball picked out Liam Wright driving forward on the left wing and his low cross was converted by Dsane from close range to claim his fifteenth goal of the season. The game took a bizarre twist on the half hour mark when the referee handed Evans his marching orders after taking a quick free-kick. The midfielder had already been booked ten minutes earlier for a late tackle on Darren Wheeler who had to be substituted due to the injury sustained in the challenge. The referee brandished the second yellow card instantly but it appeared he only realised he needed to show a red card after asking Evans to show him his shirt number. However, Godalming could not utilise their one-man advantage as the stop-start nature from the referee’s whistle to book two of their players in quick succession in conjunction with the treacherous conditions put a damp squib on the contest going into the interval. Godalming came out fighting in the second half and almost equalised on 63 minutes when Scott Harris headed Ryan Lake’s corner across goal for Dan Read but he headed his effort against the crossbar from only six yards out. The visitors continued to push forward in the final stages but Warren Harris and substitute George Short were both denied by Merstham keeper David Wilkinson blocking the fierce efforts away at his near post. Then in the dying minutes, a scramble inside Merstham’s penalty area saw Edwards fire an effort goalwards but he could only watch with despair as his deflected shot crept just wide of the post as the Moatsiders survived the onslaught to record the double over their higher placed opponents. |

And it was Merstham’s new style of play that dominated much of the first half and they could easily have been 4-1 up the break if it hadn’t been for a ‘Man of the Match’ display by Rocks goalkeeper Craig Stoner. BRT got back into the game in the second half scoring their second ten minutes in but Merstham fought bravely to limit them to the two goals. If only they had put away their early chances the Moatsiders could well have come away three points to the good. - Johnny Moatside
Match Report:
David Kirkaldy
Merstham’s hopes of recording back-to-back league victories for the first time under Hayden Bird were dashed by league leaders Bognor Regis Town. The Moatsiders controlled the opening 20 minutes but failed to capitalise on their dominance as James Crane put the hosts ahead four minutes before half-time. Bognor grew in confidence in the second half and clinched the points through substitute Ashley Robinson’s 30-yard screamer ten minutes after the interval to stretch their lead at the top of the table to six points. With eight of the 10 games in the division postponed due to the freezing temperatures, Merstham had the opportunity to climb back into the top ten after thrashing promotion-chasing Folkestone Invicta in their previous outing. However, the Moatsiders were without the hat-trick hero of that game Harry Ottaway through illness but were able to recall top goalscorer Roscoe Dsane back into the starting line-up. After three pitch inspections at Nyewood Lane, the match was officially given the green light an hour before kick-off with Merstham starting in the same swagger that destroyed Invicta. Fabio Saraiva’s sixth minute free-kick clipped off the top of the crossbar while four minutes later they were almost gifted an early lead when Darryl Woolers cleared Liam Wright’s cross inches past his own post. Bognor’s first chance came from Crane after 12 minutes but his long range effort not only cleared the bar but also went out of the ground. Sam Tucknott proved to be a constant threat for the Moatsiders and his dangerous cross on 14 minutes saw Dsane head towards the far corner but Bognor keeper Craig Stoner pulled off a superb one-handed save to scoop the ball away. Four minutes later, Dsane was again denied by Stoner when the striker ran onto Peter Wedgeworth’s long ball and fired a low left-footed effort across goal but the keeper made another terrific save to keep the scores level. Tucknott blasted an effort from just outside the penalty area on 20 minutes into the side-netting as Merstham looked to be in total control of the contest. Bognor only managed to create their first meaningful attack after 33 minutes when a swift counter attack saw Ben Johnson run unopposed towards goal but the winger’s shot from the edge of the area whistled past the post. Merstham wasted another glorious chance on 39 minutes when Liam Wright’s tame header following Rob Carter’s cross was comfortably saved by Stoner. The Moatsiders paid the price just two minutes later when Bognor took an undeserved lead as an unmarked Crane managed to keep his composure and instinctively volleyed home Johnson’s corner from less than ten yards. Merstham continued to push forward but Stoner continued his faultless display in Bognor’s goal after blocking Dsane’s close range effort from Saraiva’s cross to keep the hosts in command going into the interval. After stealing the advantage, Bognor made a double substitution at half-time with Callum Sherriff and goalscorer Crane being replaced by Osa Obanwonyi and Robinson to breath a new sense of purpose into the hosts. They started to show their superiority by dictating possession in the midfield and thwarted Merstham’s attacking options. It was from out of nowhere that Bognor managed to double their advantage on 55 minutes when Robinson unleashed an unstoppable 30-yard effort that flew past David Wilkinson into the bottom right corner to seal a certain victory. Bognor continued the onslaught and should have added a third when Wilkinson parried Terry Dodd’s shot towards Steve Harper but the striker somehow headed the rebound wide from less than five yards out. The Moatsiders could not grasp a foothold in the second half as the hosts continued to look comfortable in the final stages. Merstham’s best effort saw substitute Joe Holland’s looping header clawed away by Stoner from underneath the bar to leave The Moatsiders wondering what might have happened if they had taken one of their early chances. |

And it was the Merstham contingent of twenty or so faithful followers that were the most vociferous as ‘Man of the Match’ Harry Ottaway found the back of the net in the 55th minute for a hard worked hat-trick and Merstham’s fourth. It was the Moatsider’s finest win of the season and no little credit to new manager Hayden Bird who has made his team more of a ‘team’. But let’s not get too carried away there’s another tough test for ‘Bird’s Babes’ at home to another promotion contender, Maidstone United, on Saturday and as Greek philosopher Aristotle once said ‘One swallow a summer does not make’ Merstham must not think that this win guarantees everything will be fine from now on, complacency is a cruel master. - Johnny Moatside
Match Report:
David Kirkaldy
Merstham fans couldn’t believe their eyes after witnessing an awe-inspiring display after Hayden Bird claimed his first victory as manager and shatter promotion chasing Folkestone Invicta’s unbeaten home league record. Harry Ottaway’s hat-trick helped the Moatsiders claim their biggest scalp of the season and inflict revenge on Invicta after they suffered the reverse scoreline in their earlier encounter this season. Merstham handed a debut to new right back Robert Carter and recalled left winger Liam Wright to the starting line-up allowing attacking midfielder Fabio Saraiva a free-role to support Ottaway through the centre. The Moatsiders impressively started at a fast tempo and came close to taking the lead in the second minute as Saraiva’s 20-yard free-kick from the right was turned over the crossbar by Invicta goalkeeper Jack Delo. Merstham continued to put pressure on the hosts and deservedly took the lead when Ottaway side footed Carter’s cross from the edge of the area into the net in the tenth minute. A second goal looked inevitable two minutes later when Liam Wright won a 50-50 challenge with Delo after the winger chased Saraiva’s long ball but no Merstham attacker was inside in the area to convert Wright’s looping cross. The action continued at a frenetic pace as Invicta responded when Stuart King’s blocked shot rebounded to Josh Burchill but his follow-up effort was comfortable saved by keeper David Wilkinson. Merstham’s new attacking style saw the visitors dominate possession but with a slender lead, the Moatsiders needed to secure a second goal but Delo was on-hand to deny the visitors with two spectacular saves. Firstly, the keeper parried Wright’s header away following Tucknott’s deep cross from the right. Then he superbly denied Ottaway after Invicta centre-back Frankie Chappell slipped allowing the striker to run towards goal. However, the Moatsiders did eventually double their lead on 28 minutes when Wright’s pinpoint cross picked out Saraiva who glanced his header past Delo just moments after he had been unable to get his head onto a Tucknott cross. It could have been worse for Invicta before the interval but Delo performed heroics by superbly tipping Wright’s fierce 25-yard effort onto the crossbar to give the hosts a chance of mounting a fightback in the second half. Invicta’s hopes were quickly dashed as Merstham extended their lead just four minutes after the restart when Ottaway slotted home Saraiva’s inch-perfect through ball into the bottom right corner. The hosts were left shell-shocked after 54 minutes when Ottaway completed his hat-trick after a quickly taken corner saw the striker glance home Tucknott’s cross to the sheer disbelief of the away fans. Merstham almost added a fifth on 66 minutes but Delo continued his impressive form to deny Ottaway from close range after he instinctively turned the striker’s effort round the post despite moving in the opposite direction. Folkestone never gave up hope of scoring a consolation and they created their best chance from Antonio Gonnella’s corner on 72 minutes but Simon Austin’s looping header was cleared off the line by Justin Hemmings to keep Merstham’s clean sheet intact. Although the result will only hamper Folkestone’s promotion ambitions, Merstham fans will look forward with great anticipation to the rest of the campaign after witnessing a glimpse of what the future holds. |

Merstham goalkeeper Joe White had a game to forget after looking culpable in all three goals during the defeat against promotion chasing Dulwich Hamlet. White saw strikes from Ethan Pinnock and Nyren Clunis sail over his head into the net while Frankie Sawyer rolled a low effort past the nonchalant keeper as Hamlet cruised to a comfortable victory. Merstham manager Hayden Bird made five changes from the defeat at Ramsgate and handed debuts to centre-back David Graves, left-back Peter Wedgeworth, central midfielder James Evans and winger James Fray. The Moatsiders squandered an early chance when Fabio Saraiva’s low fifth minute cross picked out Roscoe Dsane six yards out but the striker under pressure from defender Lewis Goncalves could not direct his effort goalwards. Hamlet started to put pressure on Merstham’s goal but were gifted the lead on 17 minutes after a mistake by White saw Pinnock’s free-kick from the right touchline catch out the keeper who let the ball fly over him into the far corner. The visitors grew in confidence dictating possession with their crisp passing style while Merstham let their frustration boil over with Dean Hamlin, Adam Broomhead, Graves and Evans all receiving yellow cards in the first-half. Merstham did create a couple of openings towards the end of the half but Hamlet shot stopper James Tedder brilliantly saved Fray’s fierce 25-yard effort. Then moments before the break, the keeper rushed off his line to deny Fray again after a poor headed clearance by defender Francis Duku. The home faithful remained upbeat during the half-time interval but this quickly evaporated as lightning struck twice just 20 seconds into the second half when Clunis clipped his cross from the right wing over White into the net. Merstham never gave up hope embodied by striker Harry Ottaway who single-handedly created their best chance on 55 minutes when he cleverly lifted the ball over the head of Duku but unfortunately he snatched his first-time shot and the effort fell safely into Tedder’s hands. The Moatsiders continued the onslaught as Fabio Saraiva’s free-kick flew just over the crossbar, Adam Moriarty’s 20-yard piledriver whistled inches past the post and Ottaway headed Liam Wright’s corner into the side-netting. However, Hamlet looked dangerous on the counter attack and the visitors put the result beyond doubt on 75 minutes when Clunis played a clever through ball to leave substitute Sawyer bearing down towards goal. The striker rolled a left-footed shot across goal and while White was casually strolling towards the far post expecting the shot to dribble wide, the ball came off the inside of the post and trickled into the net to seal a deserved victory for the visitors. |

Merstham grabbed one back late in the game when Liam Thomas headed home a Sam Tucknott free kick however on the stroke of time Michael Yianni gave Ramsgate their fourth. - Johnny Moatside
Match Report:
David Kirkaldy
Merstham flattered to deceive as Hayden Bird’s first game in charge
ended in defeat despite the Moatsiders taking the lead against Ramsgate.
After a bright opening, Roscoe Dsane’s penalty gave Merstham the lead
midway through the first half but two goals in five minutes from Ian
Pulman and Stephen O’Brien put the hosts in control before the interval.
Simon Pettit extended Ramsgate’s lead before Liam Thomas set-up a tense
finale but the hosts put the result beyond doubt in stoppage time
through Michael Yianni to leapfrog Merstham in the table.
Merstham players were eager to impress their new manager and made a
promising start when Sam Tucknott headed Dsane’s cross from the left
narrowly past the post inside the opening two minutes. The Moatsiders
looked comfortable in possession spreading the ball around from
side-to-side with conviction and were rewarded for their persistence on
20 minutes. Fabio Saraiva’s fierce effort from the edge of the area was
parried away by goalkeeper Danny Twyman and the rebound fell to Liam
Wright who was bundled over inside the area. The referee pointed to the
penalty spot and Dsane confidently despatched the kick into the bottom
right corner to send Merstham into a deserved lead. Ramsgate fought
their way back into the contest and to make matters worse for Merstham
they gifted their opponents their equaliser on 37 minutes. Thomas under
hit his pass back to David Wilkinson allowing Pulman to round the keeper
and slot the ball home into an empty net. The game completely changed
with Ramsgate now in the ascendency and they took the lead two minutes
before half-time. Pettit’s long throw was flicked on at the near post
towards O’Brien who managed to get in front of his marker to prod the
ball past Wilkinson from close range to leave Merstham reeling at the
interval.
The Moatsiders regrouped in the second half and should have equalised
three minutes after the restart but an unmarked Dsane volleyed Liam
Wright’s cross wide from ten yards with the striker showing his
frustration by placing his hands over his face. Ramsgate again exploited
Merstham’s weakness at defending set-plays on 66 minutes when O’Brien’s
free-kick saw two Ramsgate players waiting unmarked at the far post as
Pettit headed home for a two-goal advantage. Merstham lost their cutting
edge upfront and creativity in midfield with the second half seemingly
passing them by. Then from out of nowhere, the Moatsiders grabbed a
lifeline after 78 minutes when Tucknott’s free-kick saw Thomas unleash a
bullet header that flew past Twyman to cut the deficit back down to one
goal. Merstham pressed forward in the final stages but failed to unlock
a resolute Rams defence and Yianni took full advantage of the open space
left by the visitors in the third minute of injury time clipping an
effort over Wilkinson to seal victory for Ramsgate. |

Match Report:
David Kirkaldy
A resurgent Merstham snatched a late victory against Faversham Town after recovering from a goal down in the final ten minutes. Adrian Stone put the visitors ahead ten minutes into the second half when keeper David Wilkinson dropped the striker’s outstretched effort into the goal. However, Fabio Saraiva and Omar Folkes spared the keeper’s blushes with two sensational strikes from outside the penalty area to give Merstham their first victory in five league games. The Moatsiders made a couple of changes with Harry Ottaway returning after injury and Tommy Youle starting his first match in the centre of midfield but both teams struggled to make any impression during the early exchanges. Roscoe Dsane fired the first shot in anger after 15 minutes driving a low 25-yard effort straight at Faversham keeper Robert French but it was the visitors who created the first clear cut chance on the half hour. After a poor defensive clearance by Liam Thomas, Dave Botterill clipped the ball back in-behind Merstham’s backline to Stone whose first-time volley was parried away for a corner by Wilkinson at his near post. From the resulting Botterill corner, Ashley Brown managed to ghost in-between his marker and Wilkinson but could only head the ball over the crossbar from less than five yards out. The Moatsiders created a couple of opportunities with half-time looming as Liam Wright and Ottaway both had efforts that crept agonisingly wide of French’s right-hand post with the scoreline remaining goalless at the interval. Merstham sprung into life in the second half and three minutes after the restart Sam Tucknott galloped forward on the counter following a poor Faversham free-kick. Tucknott and Dsane combined to put Ottaway one-on-one with French and the striker cleverly opened his body to clip the ball over the keeper who went to ground early but unfortunately the effort rebounded off the bar. Then almost inevitably disaster struck on 55 minutes as Faversham took the lead completely against the run of play thanks to a blunder from the normally-reliable Wilkinson. Stone managed to direct Aaron Quain’s deflected cross towards goal which should have seen Wilkinson take a routine catch but the ball fell out of the keeper’s grasp into the goal to gift the visitors the lead. Despair soon turned to disbelief for the home fans on 75 minutes when the referee waved away Tucknott’s penalty appeal after Sam Gore appeared to have clipped the winger following a mazy run into the box. It looked as though it was going to be one of those days for Merstham but five minutes later the referee awarded the Moatsiders a free-kick after Folkes was tripped just outside the area. The home fans waited with bated breath as Saraiva stepped up to take the free-kick and he duly delivered looping his effort over the wall and into the bottom right corner leaving French rooted to his spot. Merstham were now in the ascendency and struck the killer blow on the stroke of ninety minutes when Omar Folkes superb 25-yard drive flew into the bottom left corner to spark euphoric celebrations around the Moatside. |

Merstham looked a little lost without the tireless work of Harry Ottaway who was sidelined through an injury gained in the Chipstead game. Sam Tucknott was as relentless as ever and provided the vital ball to give Merstham the lead on ten minutes through Liam Wright. Just before the break Jerome Maledon levelled for the Swans and that’s how the result remained. You may say you must take the positives from these games but quite frankly the only positives taken were that we know what the negatives are; a bit harsh maybe. - Johnny Moatside
Match Report:
David Kirkaldy
A renewed sense of optimism swept through Merstham fans at the dawn of a new year after watching their team dominate the opening half against Walton and Hersham. Liam Wright headed the Moatsiders in front on 12 minutes but déjà vu struck as another lapse in concentration at the end of a half saw Walton’s Jerome Maledon equalise in the final minute of the first-half. Walton continued to apply the pressure in the second half but was denied by an in-form David Wilkinson between the sticks to leave Merstham recording their third successive one-all scoreline during the festive season. Merstham were without their target man Harry Ottaway through injury but started impressively as Wright poked Sam Tucknott’s dangerous low cross just wide of the near post inside the opening three minutes. The same two combined ten minutes later when Tucknott’s scintillating pace took him past Shaun Elliott and the winger delivered a pinpoint cross to the far post where Wright was waiting to nod the ball home for an early lead. Walton battled back into the contest but every time they managed to get into a promising position the final ball let the hosts down. Merstham needed to take advantage of their opponents disastrous start and created a glorious opportunity to double their lead on 40 minutes after a disappointing Walton free-kick led to a three-on-one counter attack. Roscoe Dsane squared the ball across to Wright on the edge of the area but instead of passing back to Dsane, he decided to go for glory with goalkeeper Rodney Chiweske quickly closing him down and the striker wildly blasted his effort over the bar much to the frustration of Dsane and the travelling fans. Worse was to follow on the stroke of half-time when Victor Kiri picked out an unmarked Maledon on the edge of the area and the midfielder struck a low left footed effort into the bottom right corner for the hosts to equalise moments before the interval. The second half took 15 minutes to produce the first clear cut chance and it fell to Walton’s Dan Morris whose 20-yard driven effort was superbly saved by Wilkinson with his fingertips to turn the low shot around his right hand post. Wilkinson came to Merstham’s rescue again two minutes later making an instinctive save to deny Phil Williams tipping his header from Elliott’s deep cross over the crossbar. Walton’s bright spell seemed to spur the Moatsiders back onto the front foot but this time Chiweshe kept the hosts in the game pushing Fabio Saraiva’s header at the far post over the bar. Moments later the keeper majestically leapt to tip Saraiva’s free-kick 25-yard free-kick over that looked destined to finish in the top corner. Walton continued to push forward in the final 15 minutes but Wilkinson produced a couple of spectacular saves to deny the hosts a late victory. First, Wilkinson blocked another Morris effort at his near post and then the keeper denied Williams inside the area after Merstham failed to clear Liam Collin’s free-kick as the Moatsiders barely held on to claim another point. |

For all the bits in between I’ll leave you to read David’s (Kirkaldy) match report. Merstham got off to a glorious start when Alim Sesay found the back of the net with just 48 seconds on the clock and 88 minutes later former Moatside defender Russell Bedford shattered the dream of three points for the home team. - Johnny Moatside
Match Report:
David Kirkaldy
Merstham finished the year with a damp squib after conceding a late equaliser against local rivals Chipstead on a wet and dreary Friday evening. Alim Sesay gave the Moatsiders a perfect start after scoring in the opening minute but they failed to build on their early advantage and paid the price when Russell Bedford equalised on the stroke of ninety minutes. Merstham recalled influential centre-back Liam Thomas and midfielder Sesay to the starting line-up while Fabio Saraiva made an uncustomary appearance at left back. Spectators were still taking their seats when Chips goalkeeper Martin Grant parried Liam Wright’s fierce effort into the path of Sesay who slotted home from six yards to gift the Moatsiders an early lead within the first 50 seconds. Merstham were unlucky not to double their lead on 16 minutes as Roscoe Dsane’s powerful 25-yard drive rebounded off the inside of the post and bounced away to safety. Chipstead created their first chance three minutes later when Marcus Cassius opened up Merstham’s defence and tried to find the bottom corner with a low effort but he directed his shot the wrong side of the post. The Moatsiders continued to dominate but could not find the target as Harry Ottaway drove his snapshot wide on 23 minutes after a clever ball over the top from Fabio Saraiva while Dsane volleyed Sam Tucknott’s cross just wide of Grant’s near post on the half hour. The visitors sprung into life six minutes later when Jason Goodchild’s floated cross fell to an unmarked Alex Wilks at the back post. Wilks drove a fierce effort straight at keeper David Wilkinson who amazingly blocked the shot with his legs before collecting the ball at the second attempt to keep Merstham’s one-goal advantage intact at the interval. Chipstead continued to apply pressure in the second half as Wilkinson had to be on his toes three minutes after the break to claw a header from his own defender round the post that looked destined to be looping over his head. It almost cost Merstham as from the resulting Callum O’Shea corner an unmarked Matt York headed inches wide of the target at the near post. As conditions deteriorated so did the quality of the contest with both teams employing long balls with passing becoming treacherous on the wet surface. Chipstead kept pressing forward but Wilkinson again saved from Cassius on 82 minutes tipping his fierce first-time shot over the bar. Merstham survived the onslaught and started to express themselves in the final five minutes but Grant came to the visitors rescue rushing off his line to deny Ottaway while comfortably catching Dsane’s tame 12-yard effort. It looked as though the Moatsiders had seen off the threat from their rivals until Bedford ran into the box to convert Tom Battens cross at the far post to deny Merstham, who will hope a new year provides brighter results. |

The team as a whole let down Caretaker Managers Antony Williams and Rob Smith with a tired and ignominious performance. After going down to 10 men early in the game when Fabian Batchelor was red-carded it was former Moatside favourite Kwabena Agyei who gave the visitors the lead shortly before half time. Merstham equalised four minutes after the break through Louis Hollingsworth and then looked as if they wanted to get home to finish off the Festive leftovers. . - Johnny Moatside
Match Report:
David Kirkaldy
Merstham failed to display their killing touch in front of goal against struggling Whyteleafe despite the visitors playing the majority of the game with ten men. Fabian Batchelor was shown a red card after appearing to elbow Louis Clark inside the opening 15 minutes but Leafe recovered to take the lead on 37 minutes following a piece of individual brilliance from Kwabena Agyei. Louis Hollingsworth equalised for the Moatsiders four minutes into the second half but neither side could muster a winning goal and settled for a point apiece in this exhilarating Boxing Day local derby. Merstham made a couple of defensive changes after the humiliating loss to Crawley Down as Jamie Pearson debuted at left back while Dean Gunner made a welcome return to the starting eleven. Whyteleafe had to recover from an early setback when Batchelor was harshly sent off after 14 minutes when the striker's flailing arm caught Clark in the face but there appeared to be little aggressive intent in the incident. Merstham did not utilise their one man advantage and paid the price on 37 minutes when Leafe cleared a poorly executed Sam Tucknott free-kick to launch a quick counter attack. Agyei stumbled over the ball on the edge of the area but the striker was allowed to turn and majestically chipped the ball over goalkeeper David Wilkinson into the far corner to give Whyteleafe an unexpected half-time lead. The Moatsiders quickly bounced back in the second half when Hollingsworth headed home Fabio Saraiva’s dangerous corner after 49 minutes to put the momentum back into Merstham’s hands. Roscoe Dsane should have put the hosts into the lead on the hour mark after getting on the end of Harry Ottaway’s low driven cross but unfortunately the striker miscued his effort over the bar from less than five yards. Merstham again went close on 72 minutes when Ottaway glanced Saraiva’s free-kick towards goal before keeper Paul Smith could gather the cross but Dan Aldous managed to hook the ball off the line to avert the danger. Dsane again wasted a glorious chance five minutes later when Ottaway flicked on Wilkinson’s long ball and the striker lifted his effort over Smith’s head but the ball agonisingly bounced the wrong side of the post. Both sides created late chances to steal the victory but Leafe’s Fred Fleming headed Ashley Snadden’s free-kick onto the crossbar with just five minutes remaining. Then in injury time, Merstham substitute Tommy Youle headed Dsane’s cross inches wide of the far post to leave both teams having to share the spoils. |

Ten minutes after the restart Jamie Cade put the Anvils back into the game with a well taken penalty and from then on they didn’t look back. An error by Merstham keeper Joe White gifted Tom Burton a goal to give Crawley Down the lead. Heads went down and ten minutes later leading scorer Luke Blewden made it 3-1 to the home side. Crawley Down added a fourth minutes later when Cade grabbed his second. It was a bitter disappointment to the travelling fans and especially to Managers Antony Williams and Rob Smith who were hoping that a win would help them get the job permanently. As reason for the defeat? Were the Moatsiders up against two tough opponents; Crawley Down and Merstham Complacency? - Johnny Moatside
Match Report:
David Kirkaldy
Merstham went from ecstasy to despair as their recent good form took a nose dive after Crawley Down came from behind to thump the Moatsiders with four second half goals. Liam Thomas gave Merstham the lead five minutes before half-time but the pivotal moment came on 56 minutes when Crawley were awarded a penalty after Nathan Simpson tripped Tom Burton inside the area. Jamie Cade confidentially despatched the spot kick to equalise and thereafter it was one-way traffic with further strikes from Burton, Luke Blewden and Cade gifting the home side a resounding victory. Both teams went into this game in good form after winning their previous two league games without conceding a goal but it was Merstham who started brightly using their direct style to get into promising positions down the flanks. Crawley goalkeeper Mark Zawadski denied Harry Ottaway in the seventh minute when he had to backpedal to tip the striker’s looping header over the bar from Nathan Simpson’s cross on the left by-line. Merstham should have taken the lead on the half hour mark when Ottaway’s precision pass put Roscoe Dsane through on-goal and the striker tried to go around the advancing Zawadski. Dsane was forced wide of the goal and decided to cut back inside rather than shoot from an acute angle and stab a low effort towards goal but unfortunately Ashley Jones was waiting on the goal line to clear the danger away with ease. The Moatsiders did take the lead after 40 minutes when centre back Thomas managed to glance Fabio Saraiva’s dangerous free-kick with the back of his head beyond Zawadski for a deserved lead at the interval. Crawley had barely registered an attack but that changed ten minutes after the restart when Burton managed to pip Simpson to the loose ball just inside the area and Cade blasted his penalty into the net to equalise for the hosts. Louis Hollingsworth replaced the influential Thomas on 62 minutes following an injury to the defender but worse was to follow when Crawley took the lead just three minutes later. Merstham goalkeeper Joe White dropped Frazer Logan’s corner straight to Burton who bundled the ball into the goal from close range. The Moatsiders lost their confidence and looked all at sea defensively while lacking an attacking outlet to disrupt the home side’s momentum. Crawley clinched the points after 77 minutes when Cade headed a seemingly hopeful long ball through the middle into the path of Blewden and the striker confidently lifted the ball over the head of White into the net. The hosts added a fourth on 81 minutes on the counter attack when Blewden repaid the favour to an unmarked Cade who headed home from eight yards to leave Merstham fans scratching their heads as to what went drastically wrong. |

Merstham breezed into the lead with just two minutes on the clock as Roscoe Dsane grabbed his eleventh league goal of the season followed twenty minutes later by Harry Ottaway’s strike. On the stroke of half time Fabio Saraiva added Merstham’s third silencing the home crowd. The Gs came out determined to get back into the game and for awhile they were looking good but this was cut short within fifteen minutes of the restart when a perfect cross from Ottaway found Liam Wright in acres of space to make it 4-0 to the visitors. - Johnny Moatside
Match Report:
David Kirkaldy
Merstham claimed their biggest victory of the season after breezing past Godalming Town with a phenomenal four goal display. Roscoe Dsane inspired the Moatsiders scoring in the opening 75 seconds with Harry Ottaway, Fabio Saraiva and Liam Wright completing the rout to bring an early Christmas present to the Merstham faithful. On a freezing Tuesday evening, Merstham started on fire when Ottaway headed Saraiva’s cross onto the bar but Dsane was waiting to nod the rebound home from close range to gift the visitors an early lead. Merstham continued to overpower their opponents in midfield with Saraiva driving a low 25-yard effort against the post on 18 minutes before the Moatsiders doubled their advantage six minutes later. Ottaway played a one-two with Dsane on the edge of the area and slid a low effort past goalkeeper Jamie Norris onto the far post but this time Merstham were not to be denied by the woodwork as the ball came off the inside of the post and past the goal line before Norris could gather the rebound. Godalming were unlucky not to grab a goal back on the half hour after Gavin Smith rattled a 30-yard effort against the crossbar that sent reverberations around the ground. The Moatsiders killed the game off on the stroke of half-time when the ball fell to Saraiva on the edge of the area and he majestically side-footed a low effort into the bottom right corner to wrap up a three goal lead at the interval. Godalming came out fighting in the second half and created a couple of glorious opportunities inside the opening ten minutes. Dan Read’s low effort across goal forced Merstham goalkeeper Joe White into his first save with his outstretched left foot and then an unmarked Smith headed Ryan Lake’s corner narrowly wide from less than six yards out. Merstham knocked the confidence back out of the hosts on 59 minutes when Godalming’s Adam Foulser failed to deal with Ottaway’s low driven cross and Liam Wright pounced at the far post to slot home the Moatsiders fourth. It should have been even worse for Godalming four minutes later but defender Wes Harrison managed to scramble Adam Broomhead’s header off the line from a dangerous Sam Tucknott corner. The hosts thought they had been awarded a penalty on 75 minutes when the referee pointed to the spot following Louis Clark’s mistimed tackle on Scott Harris but to the annoyance of the home fans the linesman correctly advised the referee that the challenge happened outside the area. Then five minutes later, Merstham were awarded a penalty when Norris brought down Dsane following a swift counter attack with the striker trying to take the ball past the goalkeeper. Dsane took the spot kick himself but blazed his effort over the bar much to the satisfaction of the aggrieved home fans but at the full time whistle it was Merstham who celebrated successive league victories and back-to-back clean sheets for the first time since the end of August. |

Merstham dominated much of the play looking comfortable in every area of play. But the star of the game was Moatside’s Sam Tucknott who just seems to be enjoying his football more and more and that has resulted in him earning the ‘Man of the Match’ for two of the last three games. Eastbourne rarely troubled keeper David Wilkinson giving Merstham their first clean sheet since late August. A good result which sets them up nicely for a tough away game at Godalming Town on Tuesday evening. - Johnny Moatside
Match Report:
David Kirkaldy
Sam Tucknott netted twice to help Merstham ease to a comfortable victory over mid-table rivals Eastbourne Town. After an evenly contested opening, Tucknott brought the game to life after 28 minutes when he sensationally struck a 20-yard effort that flew into the net off the underside of the crossbar much to the amazement of the home crowd. Eastbourne rarely ventured into Merstham’s penalty area and it took until 42 minutes for the visitors to create their first clear-cut chance. A free-flowing move down the right ended with Owen Kassack clipping an effort over Merstham keeper David Wilkinson from ten yards but fortunately for the Moatsiders his shot crept just over the bar. Merstham picked up their intensity and doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time. Substitute Harry Ottaway, who had replaced the injured Colin Hartburn after 36 minutes, played the ball through to Roscoe Dsane and the striker confidently slotted a low effort past Kieron Thorp into the bottom corner for his eleventh goal of the season. Merstham continued to pile the pressure on their opponents in the second half with Ottaway winning every ball in the air and this allowed Tucknott, Dsane and Liam Wright to run in-behind Eastbourne’s defence on a regular basis. The tactic almost worked perfectly ten minutes after the restart when Ottaway headed on Wilkinson’s goal kick to Dsane who prodded an effort past Thorp but defender Nicholas Fogden managed to block the attempt on the goal line following a last-ditch sliding clearance. Eastbourne squandered the chance to claw their way back into the contest on 70 minutes when Nathan Crabb pounced onto Thorp’s long clearance. Crabb tried to lift the ball over Wilkinson’s head but the keeper comfortably caught the ball to deny the visitors a late lifeline. Merstham took full advantage of a tiring Eastbourne defence by adding a third in injury time when Ottaway dispossessed Adam Davidson to set up a three-on-one counter attack. Ottaway picked out Tucknott inside the area and the winger fired a low effort across Thorp into the bottom left corner to put the icing on the cake for the Moatsiders who celebrated only their second victory in seven league games. |

Then to rub salt into the wound Hythe added a third through Jimmy Dryden with just a few minutes left to play. - Johnny Moatside
Match Report:
David Kirkaldy
Merstham succumbed to another away day misery as Hythe Town comfortable eased to their third successive victory. Two first half goals from Craig Thompson gave the home side a commanding lead before Roscoe Dsane brought Merstham back into contention before the interval. However, the Moatsiders failed to unlock a stubborn Hythe in the second half and the hosts made sure of their victory ten minutes from time through Jimmy Dryden’s overhead kick to climb above Merstham in the table. The game began in a lively fashion with both teams playing an open attacking style. Hythe thought they had taken the lead in the eighth minute when Dave Cook headed Aaron Lacy’s long throw towards Dryden waiting unmarked at the back post but the assistant raised his flag to deny the hosts an early lead. Merstham ran straight down the other end and almost scored when Harry Ottaway combined with strike partner Dsane but he could only prod a low effort towards goal which was easily saved by keeper Paul Egan’s feet. Hythe started to dominate the contest after winning all the second balls in midfield and they deservedly edged ahead on 22 minutes. Nick Reeves pumped a long ball forward to send Brendon Cass and Thompson through on-goal. Merstham keeper David Wilkinson raced off his line but could not prevent Cass from squaring the ball across to Thompson who slotted the ball home into the unguarded net. Merstham had chances to equalise but Dsane headed Sam Tucknott’s cross just wide of the far post and Tucknott blazed an effort into the side netting following a counter attack from a Hythe free-kick. Hythe took full advantage by extending their lead on 40 minutes when Thompson majestically headed Dryden’s cross back across Wilkinson into the top corner for his second of the afternoon. Merstham quickly bounced back as less than a minute later Dsane evaded Hythe’s offside trap to take the ball around Egan and slip the ball into the empty net to cut the deficit in half by the interval. Unfortunately, Merstham could not build on this momentum in the second half as the visitors kept over-hitting their set-plays. The Moatsiders created their best opportunity after 63 minutes when an unmarked Ottaway somehow headed Adam Moriarty’s cross over from just eight yards out. Merstham started to show their urgency in the final 20 minutes but could not unlock the opposition and the visitors finally put the result beyond doubt on 81 minutes. The Moatsiders headed away another dangerous Lacy long throw but with his back to goal Dryden produced a spectacular overhead kick from ten yards that nestled into the far corner to send the home fans delirious and leave Merstham to contemplate their future. |

Merstham found themselves outclassed by Bognor Regis Town who
illustrated their promotion credentials after scoring four goals without
reply for the second consecutive weekend. Ben Andrews and Steve Harper
struck inside the opening half hour for The Rocks before Jason Prior and
James Crane completed the rout in the second half.
After a frenetic opening, Merstham created the game’s first effort in
anger on 13 minutes. Sam Tucknott raced onto Harry Ottaway’s glancing
header and unleashed a vicious drive from 25 yards but keeper Craig
Stoner managed to get his hands onto the effort before scooping the ball
away at the second attempt while racing back towards his goal line.
Bognor looked dangerous from set-plays and deservedly took the lead on
21 minutes after Adam Moriarty failed to clear Ben Johnson’s low corner
allowing Andrews to fire home through a crowd of players. The Rocks
stunned Merstham by doubling their lead just eight minutes later when an
unmarked Harper planted his bullet header past keeper Joe White
following a Daryl Wollers cross. Merstham mounted a fightback and were
unlucky not to cut the deficit when Fabio Saraiva saw his low 20-yard
drive cleared off the line by Jon Marzetti after Stoner had blocked Omar
Folkes initial effort from close range. Moments later, Stoner was called
into action again this time reacting superbly to deny Folkes deflected
effort by changing direction to push the effort wide of the post and
keep their two-goal advantage intact at the interval. |

The Hillians struck back three minutes later through former Moatsider Quentin Conteh.- Johnny Moatside
Match Report:
David Kirkaldy
Merstham climbed into the top ten after claiming back-to-back home
victories for the first time since August by beating Burgess Hill Town.
Liam Wright opened the scoring inside the first 15 minutes but it took
Merstham until the final five minutes to secure the points when Harry
Ottaway capitalised on Oliver Poole’s short back pass. Former Moatsider
Quentin Conteh grabbed a consolation in the final minutes for Burgess
Hill but the visitors did not have enough time to mount a comeback.
Merstham welcomed back the returning Sam Tucknott after a four-game
absence and the hosts made a bright start by taking the lead on 14
minutes. Wright sensationally skipped past two defenders on the left
by-line and kept his composure to take the ball round goalkeeper Joel
Harding to slot the ball into the net. Although The Moatsiders gained
the early initiative, Burgess Hill managed to split Merstham’s defence
wide open on several occasions. Pat Harding blasted his effort straight
at keeper Joe White on 20 minutes after a seemingly hopeful long ball
forward while ten minutes later Jonno Melia failed to hit the target
after bursting through the middle of Merstham’s defence. The Moatsiders
had a great chance to double their lead just before the interval when a
free-flowing attacking move saw Tucknott take the ball around Joel
Harding but a heavy touch allowed Olalekan Bankhole to clear the danger.
Burgess Hill came out rejuvenated in the second half and managed to get
in-behind Merstham’s defence twice in the opening five minutes. Pat
Harding brought a good save from White diving to his right while Lloyd
Cotton blazed his effort over the bar after White denied Melia from
close range. The second half did not live up to the expectations created
in the opening minutes with The Moatsiders allowing their opponents
plenty of possession but Burgess Hill unable to unlock Merstham’s gritty
defence. Merstham finally put the game beyond doubt on 87 minutes when

Take nothing away from the Stones, who earlier in the game had lost influential midfielder Alex Flisher to a serious leg injury and goalkeeper Kelvin Jack being sent off for handling outside his area, they are a very competitive side who look certain to return to the Premier League. However Merstham looked far more settle than of late and can thank their 17-year old keeper Joe White for helping keep them in with a chance of all three points until, in hindsight, he made in ill-judged decision to come out of his area to deal for a long ball and found himself stranded.- Johnny Moatside
Match Report:
David Kirkaldy
Merstham suffered late heartache after league leaders Maidstone United
snatched a dramatic injury-time equaliser in a tale of two goalkeeping
mistakes. With the hosts dominating the first-half, the game changed on
the stroke of half-time when Maidstone keeper Kelvin Jack was sent off
for handling the ball outside his own penalty area. Merstham took full
advantage of their extra man in the second half with Fabio Saraiva
putting The Moatsiders ahead on the hour mark before Buff Addae rescued
a point for the hosts following Merstham keeper Joe White’s misdemeanour
in the second minute of stoppage time.
Merstham were looking to exact revenge on their opponents after their
humiliating defeat last month in the League Cup but it was Maidstone who
started brightly creating their first opportunity in the seventh minute.
Alex Flisher’s long throw caused chaos inside Merstham’s penalty area
with the ball falling to Alex Waugh at the back post but White superbly
rushed off his goal line to make a good block following the striker’s
fierce volley. The Moatsiders created their best effort after 16 minutes
when an unmarked Harry Ottaway managed to get his head onto Omar Folkes
deep cross but the striker could not guide his header on-target from ten
yards. Maidstone started to gain the upper hand in the contest and
almost took the lead on the half-hour when Shaun Welford converted Ellis
Green’s cross onto the left hand post. The hosts kept piling on the
pressure and should have taken the lead on 40 minutes when Michael
Phillips somehow lifted Flisher’s low cross from the left over the
crossbar with his outstretched foot from less than six yards out.
However, it was from this moment that the dynamics of the game
completely changed as Flisher was injured in the build-up to the chance
and after receiving five minutes of treatment the midfielder had to be
stretched off. Then less than 30 seconds after the game restarted, Jack
came rushing off his goal line to deal with Nathan Simpson’s long ball
but bizarrely the keeper lost his bearings and decided to catch the ball
five yards outside his area. The referee had no option but to show Jack
a red card with the goalkeeper already walking towards the tunnel when
he realised his mistake but after all the drama of the opening half the
game remained goalless at the interval. |

Merstham tried their hardest to make this a competitive match but they were not helped when Omar Folkes was sent off in the first half as a result of a poor decision by the referee. The Cards were two up at the break with goals from Paris Cowan-Hall and Wayne Gray and in the second half despite have most of the play they were unable to add to their score, a credit to the Merstham players - Johnny Moatside
Match Report:
David Kirkaldy
Merstham’s hopes of an extended run in the Surrey Senior Cup evaporated after being outclassed by Conference South side Woking. After a ten day rest, Woking fielded a strong team and they demonstrated their superiority when Paris Cowan-Hall and Wayne Gray gave the hosts a two-goal advantage inside the opening half hour. The Moatsiders hardly made an impression on Woking’s goal and when Omar Folkes was sent off after a reckless challenge on Derek Duncan just before the interval, Merstham’s dreams of a cup run were shattered. Woking dominated the early exchanges and took the lead in the eighth minute after some miscommunication between Merstham’s Adam Broomhead and goalkeeper Joe White allowed Cowan-Hall to pounce for an early lead. Unfortunately, the Moatsiders were restricted to long range efforts for the majority of the match with Roscoe Dsane and Fabio Saraiva both trying their luck from distance before Woking doubled their lead on 29 minutes. Jack King played the ball to Gray inside the area with his back to goal and the striker cunningly swivelled past Broomhead to strike a fierce low effort that beat White at his near post. Merstham’s evening took a turn for the worst five minutes before the interval when Folkes lunging tackle on Duncan saw the midfielder being dismissed leaving The Moatsiders to play with ten men for the third time in four matches. Woking continued their dominance in the second half as they bombarded Merstham’s goal with numerous crosses, corners and free-kicks but they were constantly denied by the head of centre backs Broomhead and Dean Hamlin. The Moatsiders should have been handed a lifeline on 56 minutes when Harry Ottaway was pulled down by Duncan just outside the penalty area with the striker running through towards goal. However, the referee deemed the infraction deserved a yellow card despite Duncan denying a goal scoring opportunity and from the resulting free-kick Saraiva’s effort flew just agonisingly wide of Adam Little’s near post. Woking comfortably saw out the remainder of the game to progress into the next round while Merstham have to put their cup aspirations behind them for another season and focus their attention back on the league. |

Merstham suffered another disappointing defeat against Walton Casuals after Glenn Stanley scored twice inside the opening seven minutes. The Moatsiders fought back in the second half but unfortunately Jamie Byatt’s goal was disallowed for offside and when Dean Hamlin was later sent off after receiving a second yellow card it was never going to be Merstham’s day. Merstham started with the same eleven that decimated Crawley Down in the first half on Tuesday night but this time The Moatsiders made the worse possible start falling behind in the fourth minute. After successfully defending a Merstham corner, Casuals broke forward on the counter attack with Liam Holden launching a superb 40-yard cross field pass into the path of Danny Fernandez who squared the ball across for Stanley to slot home from six yards. The bad start became a nightmare two minutes later when Stanley skilfully back heeled Holden’s cross for his second although Merstham should have been awarded a free-kick when Harry Ottaway was impeded in the build-up. Casuals could have been three goals up on 21 minutes after a flowing move between Holden, Fernandez and Stanley ended with Holden crashing an effort from the edge of the area against the underside of the crossbar. Merstham battled back into the match but frustration managed to get the better of The Moatsiders who continuously argued with the referee and his assistant which led to Hamlin’s first booking after 28 minutes. Merstham had chances to cut the deficit before the break but Ottaway headed Nathan Simpson’s cross wide from eight yards while Roscoe Dsane’s first time snapshot brought a good save from Gareth Williams diving to his left as The Moatsiders could not find a way through. Merstham thought they had scored six minutes after the restart when Adam Broomhead headed Adam Moriarty’s free-kick against the bar and Byatt converted the rebound but the linesman quickly raised his flag for offside. Things went from bad to worse on 59 minutes when Hamlin’s mistimed challenge on Alfie Arthur saw the defender receive his second booking leaving Merstham to play the remainder of the match with ten men. Casuals had a great chance to put the game beyond doubt when Merstham keeper Joe White parried substitute William Adou’s effort with the rebound falling to Holden who skied the ball over with the goal at his mercy. Merstham illustrated their poor decision making when they were presented with a free-kick 25 yards from goal with only ten minutes remaining. Instead of shooting, Fabio Saraiva played the ball short to Dsane whose effort crashed against the charging Casuals players to leave Merstham supporters frustrated and dejected as they made their journey home. |

That’s to take nothing away from the Merstham side whose improving form continued with some fine flowing football in the first half with Adam Broomhead looking particularly sharp. Four up at half time was very pleasing and the ‘Moatside Passive’ had something to cheer about, eager to watch the rout continue after the break. However there were a couple of inexplicable changes in the second half; firstly a decision to replace leading scorer Roscoe Dsane Then after Crawley Down found the back of the net through Fraser Logan there followed two more Merstham substitutions and the team's shape and authority on the game all but disappeared. The Anvils scored a second ten minutes from the end as an unmarked Tom Lyons found the target. Congratulations to the team it’s certainly a morale booster and three points gained however there is still a lot more work to do especially with the likes of Woking, Maidstone United and Bognor Regis Town on the cards before the end of the month. - Johnny Moatside
Match Report:
David Kirkaldy
Merstham recorded their first league victory in five games after scoring four goals in a sensational first half display against bottom placed Crawley Down. Liam Wright, Jamie Byatt, Harry Ottaway and Roscoe Dsane seemed to put the Moatsiders in total control before the half-time interval. However, Crawley managed to grab two consolation goals through Fraser Logan and Tom Lyons to leave the Merstham faithful with mixed feelings after watching an inept second half performance. Both teams created fantastic chances in an action packed first half where the number of goals could have reached double figures. Merstham made the perfect start when Adam Moriarty’s eighth minute corner was flicked on at the near post and Liam Wright converted from close range. The visitors had two great chances to equalise but Tom Burton could only head Logan’s free-kick wide from ten yards with Merstham goalkeeper, Joe White, left stranded inside his own penalty area. Moments later, Luke Blewden took the ball around White to leave the goal gapping in front of him but defender Adam Broomhead managed to track back and divert the striker’s effort away from goal with a last ditch sliding clearance. After surviving the onslaught, Merstham doubled their advantage on 21 minutes after debutant Byatt majestically controlled Dsane’s cross at the far post on his chest, turned inside his marker and fired into the roof of the net. The Moatsiders continued on the rampage and grabbed their third after 33 minutes when Ottaway picked up the ball from 25 yards with his back to goal and unleashed a ferocious effort that flew past Mark Zawadski in a flash. Crawley created a glorious opportunity two minutes later after Lyons lifted the ball over Merstham’s defence into the path of Burton but White made a tremendous save to parry the midfielder’s effort away from danger. Merstham added a fourth just before the interval as Dsane struck a low right-footed effort from 20 yards through the legs of Ben Swetman to nestle inside the bottom left corner and give The Moatsiders an unassailable half-time lead. Merstham began the second half in similar fashion to the first and were awarded a penalty after 53 minutes but Wright’s poorly taken spot-kick was easily saved by Zawadski diving to his right. The Moatsiders made all three of their substitutions within the first 15 minutes of the second half but the changes had a negative effect as Merstham went into their shell allowing Crawley to continuously push forward on the offensive. The visitors grabbed what looked like a consolation on 67 minutes when an unmarked Logan converted a low cross from the left wing. Then the Merstham fans really started to worry when Crawley grabbed their second with ten minutes remaining when Lyons headed home Logan’s corner. However, Crawley ran out of steam in the final stages leaving Merstham to celebrate their first victory in all competitions since |

Merstham relinquished a winning position for the second consecutive
match as Whitehawk recorded their fifth straight victory to illustrate
their promotion credentials. The Moatsiders came from behind with Fabio
Saraiva and Roscoe Dsane scoring either side of half-time to cancel out
Joe Gatting’s opener. Whitehawk bounced back through Ben Godfrey before
Gatting scored the winner with twenty minutes remaining while signs of a
Merstham comeback were quickly dashed when Louis Clark was sent off in
the final stages. Merstham handed debuts to goalkeeper Joe White,
midfielder Liam Wright and winger Jason Henry but were still without
injured talisman Harry Ottaway.
The first-half provided little goalmouth action although Henry provided
a spark of excitement down the left wing on 22 minutes when he darted
past Joe Keenan but his fierce effort was tipped over keeper by Chris
Winterton. Gatting brought the game to life after 42 minutes when from
out of nowhere his 25-yard rocket flew past White to give Whitehawk the
advantage. However, the opening goal galvanised Merstham who struck back
in first-half injury time as Saraiva superbly struck a right footed
free-kick from 30 yards that curled past the outstretched hand of
Winterton into the top right corner.
The Moatsiders made a flying start to the second half with Richard
Morgan’s first-time volley going inches wide of the post two minutes
after the restart. Then from the resulting goal kick, Whitehawk gifted
Merstham the lead as Dsane dispossessed defender Craig Richards and the
striker confidently slotted the ball through Winterton’s legs for his
ninth goal of the season. Whitehawk quickly bounced back on 56 minutes
when an unmarked Ben Godfrey headed home a Josh James corner at the far
post to equalise. Then, the visitors completed their comeback after 70
minutes when Gatting converted Sam Gargan’s low cross from close range
to regain the advantage for Whitehawk. Merstham’s fightback crumbled
five minutes later when Louis Clark was sent off for dissent leaving
Whitehawk to close out a comfortable victory and stretches the
Moatsiders winless streak to seven games. |

Merstham suffered their fifth consecutive defeat after they pressed the
self destruct button against Maldon and Tiptree in the first qualifying
round of the FA Trophy. Ollie Berquez gave the Ryman League Division One
North side a fourth minute lead before Merstham capitulated in the
second half with Neil Cousins scoring twice in five minutes and Jack
Stevenson adding a fourth in the final minutes.
In an identical scenario to the heavy midweek cup defeat against
Maidstone United, Merstham created a glorious early opportunity in the
second minute. Nathan Simpson’s ball over the top of the visitors
defence found the run of Omar Folkes but unfortunately he sailed his
volley over the bar from ten yards. Merstham once again paid the price
for not taking their chance as two minutes later a dangerous Dave
Collins corner picked out an unmarked Berquez whose powerful header flew
past Michael Lidbury for an early lead. The visitors should have
increased their lead two minutes later when Leon Antoine brushed aside
Adam Broomhead but instead of going for goal the striker pulled the ball
back for Joe Pearman who saw his effort blocked. The Moatsiders tried to
battle back but were restricted to long range attempts. Folkes watched
his 20-yard effort turned round the post by goalkeeper Darren Beckett on
13 minutes while five minutes later Nathan Simpson tried his luck from
distance but fired narrowly wide. Merstham created their best chance to
equalise on the half hour when Roscoe Dsane controlled Gareth Graham’s
free-kick on his chest with his back to goal and the striker swivelled
round but volleyed just agonisingly wide of the far post. |

Merstham crashed to their heaviest defeat in over two years after being
thrashed by Maidstone United in the second round of the Alan Boon Cup.
Alex Waugh scored a hat-trick with Danny Lye, Alex Flisher and Tom Mills
completing the rout against a woeful Merstham side who have now lost
four consecutive matches for the first time since March 2009.
Merstham started brightly and should have taken the lead in the fifth
minute. Sam Tucknott’s deflected low cross fell to Roscoe Dsane with his
back to goal and the striker superbly swivelled past Gavin Greenfield
but unfortunately he skewed his effort wide of the far post. The
Moatsiders were left to rue the missed chance as Maidstone opened the
scoring three minutes later when James Pinnock flicked on Charlie
Mitten’s goal kick into the path of Waugh who slotted the ball past
keeper Michael Lidbury into the bottom right corner. Omar Folkes,
partnering Dsane upfront for the first time, spectacularly blazed an
effort wide from the edge of the area before Maidstone doubled their
lead on 32 minutes. Lye and Flisher combined on the right wing with Lye
receiving the ball back just inside the area and he blasted an effort
which flew past Lidbury in a blink of an eye. Maidstone grabbed their
third three minutes later when Waugh headed home Flisher’s corner from
less than six yards before the hosts added a fourth on the stroke of
half-time when another dangerous Flisher corner flew over everyone’s

Merstham surrendered their unbeaten home record after scoring two own
goals in consecutive second half minutes against Folkestone Invicta. The
Moatsiders were completely outclassed by Folkestone who took an early
lead through Richard Atkins but worse was to follow when Gareth Graham
and Dean Hamlin converted into their own net midway through the second
half. Merstham persisted aimlessly with their long ball tactic to little
effect while the visitors added a fourth through Simon Austin in the
final five minutes.
Folkestone opened the scoring after 16 minutes when James Everitt headed
Josh Vincent’s deep cross back into the six yard area where Atkins
converted his header into the corner. Harry Ottaway had Merstham’s best
chance of the half five minutes later when the striker superbly
controlled a long clearance upfield while Folkestone’s backline tried to
play offside. Ottaway cut inside and although the striker saw his
initial effort blocked he cleverly lifted the rebound over goalkeeper
Jack Delo but Frankie Chappell managed to track back on the line and
head the ball safely into Delo’s hands. Folkestone had opportunities to
double their lead when Darren Smith poked a low shot just past the post
and Atkins flew a 35-yard looping effort onto the roof of the net as
Merstham were fortunate to only be one goal behind at half-time.
Merstham stepped up a gear in the second half when Ottaway headed Nathan
Simpson’s dangerous cross just over the bar two minutes after the
restart. The Moatsiders should have equalised three minutes later when
Sam Tucknott managed to get on the end of Omar Folkes at the far post
but Delo performed heroics to scamper across his goal line and parry the
effort away from danger. Folkestone regained their grasp on the match on
69 minutes when Adam Broomhead was dispossessed by Atkins on the edge of
his area. Atkins squared the ball across the penalty area for Josh
Burchill on the left wing but Graham inadvertently diverted the pass
into his own net. The Moatsiders unfortunately repeated the feat 60
seconds later when Everitt cut inside from the left wing and unleashed a
ferocious effort that deflected off Dean Hamlin’s head into the top
right corner to put the result beyond doubt. A dispirited Merstham
failed to make any impression on the Folkestone goal in the final stages
and the visitors grabbed a fourth on 86 minutes when Austin converted
Everitt’s cross to complete the Moatsiders miserable day. |

Merstham suffered their second defeat inside a week after being handed a
footballing lesson by league leaders Dulwich Hamlet. The Moatsiders were
pegged back inside their own half for long periods of the game but
handled everything Hamlet could throw at them with ease until the hosts
edged ahead on the stroke of half-time through Sanchez Ming. Roscoe
Dsane managed to grab an equaliser from the penalty spot just three
minutes after the restart before Dulwich turned their fortune around
through Mu Maan and Frankie Sawyer to take a deserved victory.
In an uninspiring first-half, both teams struggled to impose their
styles on the game with set-pieces being wasted and passes going astray
in the final third. Merstham’s
best chance came when Fabio Saraiva’s tenth minute free-kick crept
underneath the wall but unfortunately he dragged the effort just the
wrong side of the post. At the other end, Rhys Coleman almost converted
Ming’s cross into his own net as his outstretched foot deflected the
ball inches outside the far post. Dulwich grew stronger as the half
progressed and their pressure finally paid off after 44 minutes. Saraiva
gave the ball away on the halfway line and Merstham’s defence allowed
Ming to run towards goal with the striker driving a low effort across
Michael Lidbury into the bottom right corner.
Although disappointed to go behind just before the interval, the
Moatsiders demonstrated their fighting spirit after Andy Martin brought
on Omar Folkes and Sam Tucknott for the start of the second half.
Merstham were gifted a penalty just three minutes after the restart when
Peter Adeniyi handled inside the area. Dsane stepped up and confidently
converted the spot kick into the right corner sending Hamlet goalkeeper
James Tedder the wrong way. The equaliser seemed to spur on Hamlet who
responded emphatically as two minutes later Sol Patterson-Bonner struck
the post with his first time effort following Ming’s dangerous low cross
into the area. Dulwich managed to regain their advantage on 54 minutes
as former Moatside favourite Maan popped up unmarked and headed home
Patterson-Bonner’s corner from eight yards out with no defender guarding
the posts. Dulwich continued on the rampage pulling Merstham apart at
will and they extended their lead on 63 minutes. Maan’s cross field pass
found an unmarked Sawyer bearing down on-goal and he struck a low
right-footed effort across goal into the bottom left corner to put the
game beyond Merstham’s reach. The
hosts could have added a fourth after Merstham were carved open yet
again but substitute Kevin James struck the post from his one-on-one
chance in the final minutes. |

Merstham squandered their chance to progress further in this season’s FA
Cup after being knocked out by AFC Sudbury in the second qualifying
round. In a fiercely competitive cup-tie, second half strikes from
Sudbury’s Nathan Clarke and David Lorimer were enough to end Merstham’s
FA Cup dreams for another season. However, the pattern of the game could
have been different if Merstham had converted their first-half chances
but unfortunately for the Moatsiders they found goalkeeper Danny Gay in
tremendous form.
Gay was first called into action on eight minutes after Louis Clark
volleyed Fabio Saraiva’s corner from eight yards but the effort fell
straight into the keeper’s arms. The keeper again needed to be on his
toes four minutes later when he quickly rushed off his goal line to deny
Omar Folkes after Harry Ottaway flicked on Michael Lidbury’s goal kick.
Merstham then wasted their best chance on 15 minutes when Ottaway raced
through towards goal but bizarrely he tried to go around Gay instead of
shooting with Sudbury defenders in close proximity and the keeper
managed to divert the ball away from danger with his left hand. Ottaway
had another chance five minutes later when he ran onto Dan Harding’s
ball and he tried to lift the ball over Gay with his first touch but
again the keeper denied the striker by comfortably catching the effort
at head height. Sudbury fought their way back into the contest and
created their first chance on the half hour. A quickly taken Daniel
Emmanuel free-kick saw Richard Howell race towards goal but Lidbury
managed to divert the midfielder’s low effort away with his legs after
diving to his left. The visitors looked dangerous on the counter and
three minutes before the interval Emmanuel used his scintillating pace
to burst past Adam Broomhead on the right wing. He squared the ball
across for David Wareham who fired an effort just inches wide of the
post as the tie remained goalless at half-time.
Sudbury continued to trouble Merstham in the second half and deservedly
took the lead five minutes after the restart when Nathan Clarke ran onto
Wareham’s corner and side-footed a low effort into the bottom right
corner. The Moatsiders struggled to make any impression in the final
half hour as they continually played the long ball over the top with the
strikers beginning to tire on an unusually warm October afternoon.
Merstham started to show their frustration with a succession of yellow
cards which included one for substitute Gareth Graham after a sliding
challenge on Wareham just three minutes after coming on. Sudbury should
have put the result beyond doubt on 75 minutes when Lidbury failed to
collect Howell’s dangerous cross. Emmanuel picked up the loose ball and
fired a low effort towards goal but Dean Hamlin managed to track back
onto the goaline to divert the effort over the crossbar. The visitors
did compound Merstham’s misery in the third minute of injury time when
David Lorimer chased down a long clearance upfield. The substitute
managed to tackle Lidbury who was outside his penalty area and he
slotted the ball into an empty net to put a definitive end to Merstham’s
cup dreams. |

After just four minutes Harry Ottaway put Merstham one up only to be cancelled out two minutes later by Pascal Ebigbo. With Merstham pressing much of the time they seemed likely to score again but it took them until five minutes from the break to regain the lead through leading scorer Roscoe Dsane. Merstham came out from the break in a fighting mood and just two minutes in up popped Fabio Saraiva to make it 3-1 to the Moatsiders. Twenty minutes later Ottaway got his second to make it Merstham’s highest score of the season so far. Ramsgate rallied slightly and substitute Warren Schulz grabbed one back with just minutes to go. A good morale boosting result for Merstham which will set them up nicely for Saturday’s Cup tie at home to AFC Sudbury. - Johnny Moatside
Match Report:
David Kirkaldy
A Harry Ottaway double helped Merstham secure a comfortable victory
against Ramsgate to maintain their unbeaten home record. In a thrilling
end-to-end encounter, Ottaway’s early opener was quickly cancelled out
by the visitors when Pascal Ebigbo’s spectacular effort flew into the
roof of the net. Roscoe Dsane and Fabio Saraiva scored either side of
half-time to put the Moatsiders in the driving seat before Ottaway added
the fourth and although Warren Schulz grabbed a consolation, the
visitors left their comeback too late.
Merstham started the game with the same intensity that saw them finish
strongly in the second half against Croydon Athletic and they took the
lead when Ottaway converted Sam Tucknott’s cross in the fourth minute.
However, the lead lasted less than three minutes as Ebigbo managed to
glide past Rhys Coleman on the edge of the area and unleash a ferocious
effort that flew past Michael Lidbury in a flash to equalise for
Ramsgate. The game continued at a frenetic pace with both sides creating
great chances but it was the Moatsiders who regained the initiative five
minutes before the interval. Dsane instantly controlled a high ball and
fired a low effort across goal past keeper Darren Hawkes into the bottom
right corner. |

Match Report:
David Kirkaldy
Merstham rescued a point after mounting a sensational fight back from
two goals down against Croydon Athletic. The Moatsiders looked out of
their depths in the first half with Croydon scoring twice in the opening
twelve minutes through Peter Afolayan and David Graves. However, the
Moatsiders fought back in a confidence boosting second half performance
with goals from Dan Harding and Fabio Saraiva to clinch an away point in
dramatic fashion.
Croydon had lost their previous four games coming into the match but the
hosts went on the offensive from the start and took the lead in the
eighth minute. Former Moatside favourite Billy Marshall clipped a ball
over the top of the defence to Connor French who drove a low cross
towards Jamie England and although Dean Hamlin managed to block the
initial strike the ball fell to Afolayan for an easy finish. The Rams
doubled their advantage just four minutes later with Merstham falling
asleep during a quickly taken short corner routine which ended with an
unmarked David Graves heading home England’s cross at the back post.
Merstham should have fallen further behind on 15 minutes as England
strolled straight through the heart of the defence and squared the ball
across for French but the striker’s first-time effort fell straight into
the hands of Michael Lidbury. Saraiva finally had Merstham’s first
effort on goal after 26 minutes with a 25-yard effort that flew over the
bar while Croydon continued to pile on the pressure on the visitors
goal. Lidbury looked unsure of himself parrying away Rob Carter’s effort
after the midfielder cut inside from the right wing on the half hour and
in injury time Marshall fired Peter Wedgeworth’s cross just inches wide
of the goal as the Moatsiders were lucky to leave the field just two
goals behind at the interval. |

Merstham completed a league and cup double over Walton & Hersham to
advance into the FA Cup Second Qualifying Round with a home tie against
Ryman League Division One North side AFC Sudbury. The Moatsiders looked
to be cruising after first half strikes from Roscoe Dsane and Sam
Tucknott but Glenn Stanley reduced the deficit with just six minutes
remaining to set-up a tense finale but Merstham held their nerve to
progress.
Walton were seeking revenge after the Moatsiders claimed victory in the
final ten minutes of their league meeting just three weeks ago and the
visitors looked hungry and determined from the outset. On the other
hand, Merstham started sluggish with debutant goalkeeper Michael Lidbury
being called into action twice in the opening five minutes. Firstly, the
keeper superbly spread himself to deny Phil Williams with the Walton
attacker bearing down on-goal. Then, Lidbury brilliantly held onto Shaun
Elliot’s fierce low drive across goal following Josh Webb’s corner.
Walton created their best opening in the tenth minute when Graeme Purdy
connected with Victor Kiri’s cross but the striker failed to hit the
target from less than six yards out. Merstham could not impose
themselves on their opponents but then from out of nowhere the
Moatsiders took the lead after 23 minutes. Adam Broomhead’s long
free-kick saw Roscoe Dsane cleverly turn past Dan Sintim inside the area
and prod the ball past goalkeeper Gareth Williams for his fifth goal of
the season. The opening goal settled the Moatsiders and they doubled
their advantage five minutes before the interval as Sam Tucknott
perfectly controlled Adam Moriarty’s cross at the back post and the
winger cut back inside to arrow a low right-footed effort into the
bottom corner.
Walton came out rejuvenated
in the second half and they issued a warning shot straight from
kick-off as Phil Williams blazed Bradley Quamina’s cross over the
bar from the edge of the area. At the other end, Tucknott used his
scintillating pace on the counter to burst past Kiri on the right
wing but his cross just eluded both Harry Ottaway and Dsane who were
left unmarked in the middle. Walton missed a glorious opportunity to
get back into the cup tie on 55 minutes after Quamina’s defence
splitting pass put Phil Williams through on-goal but Lidbury again
denied the attacker quickly rushing off his line and spreading
himself as Williams could only drag his low effort the wrong side of
the post. The visitors started to play with greater urgency but
could only create a few half chances with Reis Stanislaus heading
Stanley’s free-kick onto the roof of the net and Richard Taylor
blasting his 25-yard free-kick over the crossbar. Finally, Walton’s
pressure paid off after 84 minutes as the visitors mounted a counter
attack that ended with Stanley converting Graeme Purdy’s cross to
give the visitors a lifeline to take the game to a replay. Merstham
had to endure five minutes of injury time and the visitors almost
snatched an equaliser in the dying seconds. The hosts failed to
clear a long throw-in and Gary Frewin’s low effort flew inches wide
of the post as Merstham held on to progress into the next round and
keep their cup dream alive.

This was cancelled out twenty minutes later by Hicham Akhazzan. - Johnny Moatside
Match Report:
David Kirkaldy
Merstham courageously battled to secure a point against Sittingbourne
although the visitors will consider themselves unlucky not to leave the
Moatside victorious. Roscoe Dsane scored in the first minute of the
second half for Merstham but the visitors bounced back to equalise
through Hicham Akhazzan and almost grabbed a late winner when Elie
Kayembe struck the post in the final minutes. The Moatsiders welcomed
back veteran goalkeeper Ian Chatfield for the evening to deputise for
the injured David Wilkinson while Andy Martin also gave home debuts to
Sam Robinson and Quentin Conteh following Saturday’s embarrassing defeat
against Worthing.
The changes had a positive impact with Merstham creating the better
opportunities in an uneventful opening twenty minutes. Dsane struck a
fierce 25-yard effort but could only watch his effort deflect safely
into the arms of Tim Roberts and moments later Harry Ottaway cut inside
from the right wing and fired a low effort just agonisingly past the
keeper’s near post. The game sparked into life on the half hour when
Sittingbourne were awarded a controversial penalty when Sam Robinson
tripped Jack Hooper. Billy Manners confidently stepped up but crashed
his spot kick against the post and Ryan Golding spurred his follow-up
effort to the delight of the Merstham faithful. The Moatsiders should
have taken full advantage of the penalty miss on the stroke of half-time
when Omar Folkes intercepted Jerry Nnamni’s pass to put Dsane through
on-goal. However, the striker’s fierce effort was brilliantly parried
away to safety by Roberts to keep the scoreline goalless at the
interval. |

Merstham had tried to re-sign Mo Maan prior to the game but this was thwarted by the League’s 14-day rule. That apart the Moatsiders were taken to the cleaners by the Rebels who took benefit from some dire defending and the advantage they had of having two first- rate wingers, something maybe Merstham could learn from. Merstham had their chances but yet again they failed to capitalise on them, seems old habits die hard. - Johnny Moatside
Match Report:
David Kirkaldy
Merstham suffered their heaviest defeat under Andy Martin after being
ripped apart by high flying Worthing. The Rebels proved to be clinical
in front of goal with Ryan McBride scoring a hat-trick for the hosts and
although Merstham created good chances they paid a high price for some
atrocious defending.
Merstham began brightly but their good start was quickly undone after
Worthing was awarded a seventh minute penalty. Adam Broomhead accidently
collided with Jamie Brotherton inside the area and allowed John Lansdale
to convert the spot kick by sending goalkeeper David Wilkinson the wrong
way to give the hosts an early lead. Worthing extended their lead on 23
minutes after Merstham’s Dean Gunner miss-controlled a long ball and
allowed McBride to run towards goal. McBride slid the ball across to
Darren Budd who saw his effort blocked but Budd squared the ball back
across for McBride who fired his effort through the legs of Adam
Moriarty into the bottom corner. Merstham fought back towards the end of
the half and their pressure finally paid off after 39 minutes as
Worthing’s Glen Woodburn unfortunately converted Harry Ottaway’s fizzing
low cross into his own net. However, Worthing struck a killer blow on
the stroke of half-time as Brotherton flew past Chris Head on the right
wing and arrowed a low cross to the back post for McBride to tap home
and regain their two-goal lead by the interval.
Merstham came out rejuvenated in the second half but missed two guilt
edge chances within the first ten minutes to get themselves back into
the match. Firstly, substitute Sam Robinson intercepted a loose ball in
midfield and played Ottaway through on-goal and the striker pushed his
right-footed effort across goal but just past the far post. Moments
later, Dan Harding found himself in a similar position to Ottaway but
once again Merstham’s strike force failed to take the opportunity as
Harding lifted his effort over an oncoming Alan Mansfield but inches
wide of the post. With the Moatsiders pushing forward, it left the
backline exposed when Tom Manton won possession in midfield on 66
minutes and his perfectly weighted ball found Brotherton who slipped his
effort under Wilkinson to put the game beyond Merstham. Worthing added a
fifth just ten minutes later as McBride side footed Matt Piper’s cross
into the roof of the net after a great free-flowing move saw the striker
complete his hat-trick in style. The scoreline could have been six or
seven as Worthing continued to carve Merstham open but Wilkinson kept
both McBride and Tom Lawler at bay in the closing stages as the
Moatsiders will need to put this humiliating defeat quickly behind them. |

Merstham took the lead through Daniel Harding but from the re-start Egham’s skipper, Marcus Moody wormed his way through the Merstham defence and with a fine finish he levelled the score. Merstham took the lead again with a Roscoe Dsane penalty before making it 3-1 when a Harry Ottaway cross took a wicked deflection of Egham defender Jake Galbraith to beat Borg. Egham reduced the deficit to one when Aaron Taylor-Ives neatly headed home a free kick from former Moatsider Dale Marvell. Merstham now face Walton & Hersham at home on 17th September in the 1st Qualifying Round. - Johnny Moatside
Match Report:
David Kirkaldy
Merstham squeezed through to the qualifying stages of the FA Cup
following a nail biting replay away at Egham Town. All the goals came in
an action packed second half with a Moatsiders opener from Dan Harding,
immediately cancelled out by Egham’s Marcus Moody within five minutes of
the restart. Merstham regained the momentum through a Roscoe Dsane
penalty and a Jake
Galbraith
own goal before Aaron Taylor-Ives headed Egham a
lifeline with ten minutes remaining but the Moatsiders held their nerve
to secure a home tie against Walton & Hersham.
In an evenly contested first-half, Merstham created the better chances
but Egham’s hero from Saturday, goalkeeper Paul Borg, produced another
outstanding display to keep the hosts cup run alive. Firstly, Borg
parried a powerful D’sane effort after the Merstham front man turned his
marker on the edge of the area and fired a low right-footed effort
across goal. Then, the keeper quickly rushed off his line to deny
Harding with the striker bearing down on goal. Egham looked their most
dangerous from set pieces as an unmarked Taylor-Ives headed Dale
Marvell’s corner over the bar and just before the interval Marvell
watched his venomous free-kick fly only inches over the far corner.
The cup-tie exploded into life just two minutes after the restart with
Harding converting Chris Head’s cross from the left for Merstham’s first
goal in this season’s competition. However, the lead lasted less than
sixty seconds as straight from kick-off Moody managed to breeze his way
past Adam Moriarty and Dean Gunner and strike a low left-footed effort
across goal into the bottom corner. Egham should have taken the lead
five minutes after they equalised on the counter attack but Joe Gant
superbly denied Brendan Matthew’s fierce strike and quickly got back on
his feet to deny Moody from grabbing his second. Extra time looked
likely with both teams struggling to build any attacking momentum until
Taylor-Ives conceded a penalty on 67 minutes after a poorly timed
challenge on Harding. Merstham accepted the gift with Dsane sending Borg
the wrong way from the spot to regain the lead for the visitors. The
Moatsiders grabbed their third of the game just four minutes later when
Galbraith
unfortunately converted Harry Ottaway’s fierce low cross across the box
into his own net to give Merstham a commanding advantage. Egham showed
their fighting spirit and brought the deficit back down to one on 80
minutes when Taylor-Ives managed to get his head to the ball before Gant
could cut out Marvell’s free-kick from the left wing. However, an Egham
fightback never materialised as Merstham closed out the match and
progressed into the qualifying rounds of the FA Cup for the first time
in three years. |

Merstham failed to capitalise on the lead and a visibly vexed Andy Martin took the strange decision to bring on all three substitutes from the start of the second half to the amazement of many Moatside fans. However it failed to boost Merstham’s play and it was an old Moatside favourite, Dale Marvell, who earned his side another chance to progress to the First Qualifying Round and a home tie with Walton & Hersham. - Johnny Moatside
Match Report:
David Kirkaldy
Dale Marvell came back to haunt Merstham as Egham Town snatched a late
equaliser against the Moatsiders in the FA Cup Preliminary Round.
Merstham took an early lead after Marcus Moody put the ball into his own
net but the Moatsiders failed to capitalise on their advantage allowing
Marvell to strike twelve minutes from time to set-up a tantalising
replay on Tuesday. Egham Town have made an indifferent start to life in
the Combined Counties Premier League, winning only two of their seven
games while Merstham have won three of their opening four matches in the
Ryman League.
It took eight minutes for Merstham to show their superiority when Gareth
Graham’s dangerous free-kick caused chaos inside Egham’s defence and
resulted in Moody poking the ball past his own goalkeeper Paul Borg. The
contest lacked the passionate edge of a cup thriller with the referee
blowing his whistle every couple of minutes although he waved away an
Egham penalty appeal on 24 minutes when Dean Gunner collided with Scott
Todd. Merstham had opportunities to extend their lead in the first half
but Harry Ottaway lifted Adam Moriarty’s long ball over Borg but also
over the bar and Daniel Harding headed over from a Graham corner. They
also survived a scare five minutes before half-time as Marvell blocked
Merstham keeper Joe Gant’s clearance but fortunately the deflection took
the ball away from goal as the Moatsiders kept their advantage at the
interval.
Bizarrely, Merstham manager Andy Martin made all three substitutions for
the start of the second half as Jason Thompson, Louis Clark and Roscoe
Dsane replaced Gareth Graham, Steve Rollinson and Dan Harding. The
Moatsiders wasted a glorious chance five minutes into the half when
Dsane raced through on-goal but instead of shooting he decided to take
the ball around Borg and square across for Thompson who saw his effort
blocked. Merstham continued to create chances as Omar Folkes saw his
first time fierce volley sail just wide of the far post and Clark
watched his diving header from Thompson’s free-kick parried away by
Borg. However, the Moatsiders showed their inconsistency as they played
too many long balls over the top of the Egham backline instead of trying
to play their way through the opposition. Egham barely threatened during
the contest until they equalised after 78 minutes. Jamie Houghton
flicked Borg’s long clearance to Marvell who managed to gain half a yard
on defender Adam Broomhead to arrow a low right-footed effort across
goal into the bottom left corner. The visitors had turned the game on
its head and four minutes later they had the ball in Merstham’s net
again when Luke Muldowney headed home Moody’s corner but the referee
blew his whistle for a Merstham free-kick.
The action in the final stages went from end-to-end with Marvell firing
a long range effort just inches past the post and Merstham’s Fabio
Saraiva striking a fierce shot straight at Borg in injury time so both
teams will continue their battle on Tuesday night at The Runnymede
Stadium. |

Harry Ottaway grabbed a late winner as Merstham clinched their second
successive victory in a thrilling encounter against Walton and Hersham.
In a terrific end-to-end contest where the momentum swung one way and
then the other, the deadlock was eventually broken in the final five
minutes when Ottaway stole the victory for the Moatsiders following a
quickly taken Gareth Graham free-kick.
The game started at a frenetic pace as Ottaway’s 25-yard driven effort
in the fourth minute was superbly saved by Gareth Williams low down to
his right. Walton came back with good chances of their own inside the
opening twenty minutes as Victor Kiri lifted an effort over the
advancing Mo Maan but just over the bar and Sean Bradley arrowed his
shot inches wide of the far post. Panic reigned in Merstham’s defence on
the half-hour mark after Maan comfortably saved Jon Mundy’s long range
effort. The keeper threw the ball straight to Walton’s Kenny Ojukwu but
Dean Gunner managed to block the strike towards goal just in time. The
Moatsiders created the best move of the match on 40 minutes after a
free-flowing move saw Adam Broomhead and Ottaway combine to square the
ball across the box to Dsane who disappointedly blazed the ball over
from ten yards. Two minutes later, Dsane played Sam Tucknott through
on-goal and Merstham’s right winger tried to chip the ball over the
advancing Gareth Williams but the keeper managed to divert the effort
away with his right hand. Walton threw caution to the wind in the final
moments of the half and should have scored as Mundy met a Tommy Williams
corner at the far post but Maan redeemed himself by tipping the effort
onto the post and gathering the rebound to keep the game goalless at the
interval. |

Manager Andy Martin, visibly angered by his team’s performance, made a snap decision substituting Chris Head and Sam Tucknott before the break which, in hindsight, may not have been the smartest move. Merstham fared little better in the second half but managed to keep the deficit to one. - Johnny Moatside
Match Report:

Merstham produced a lackluster display as they suffered their first
defeat of the season at the hands of local rivals Chipstead. Jason
Goodchild scored the only goal in the first half for the Chips on a wet
and miserable evening with the Moatsiders rarely imposing themselves on
the game.
After a scrappy opening, both teams created good chances but could not
find their killer instinct in front of goal. Dan Harding shot narrowly
wide on 15 minutes for Merstham after cutting inside from the left wing.
At the other end, Alex Wilks saw his powerful 30-yard free-kick parried
away by David Wilkinson and Lee Coburn fired his low effort into the
side netting from an acute angle. Merstham created their best
opportunity on 27 minutes as Sam Tucknott’s cross picked out Roscoe
D’Sane at the far post but Martin Grant produced a great reaction save
to deny the striker from close range. Chipstead started to overpower
Merstham in midfield by winning the 50/50 balls and took the lead after
33 minutes. Coburn’s low cross on the left evaded the hands of Wilkinson
on the slippery surface and allowed Goodchild to pounce for an easy
finish. After shouting his displeasure from the stands, manager Andy
Martin took drastic action as he substituted Chris Head and Tucknott
before half-time and replaced them with Albion Baker and last season’s
top scorer Harry Ottaway. Against the run of play, the Moatsiders almost
grabbed an equaliser before the interval but Grant
superbly leapt to deny Harding after his cross-shot looked destined to
be looping over the keeper.
Merstham illustrated their defensive frailties just three minutes after
the restart as Coburn chased down a long ball upfield but Wilkinson came
to the rescue and diverted the striker’s fierce effort away for a
corner. The Moatsiders begun to push forward midway through the second
half as Adam Broomhead headed over from close range following Gareth
Graham’s corner and Adam Moriarty saw his spectacular 25-yard volley fly
just inches wide of the post. Chipstead had a great chance to put the
game beyond doubt after some mis-communication between Dean Gunner and
Wilkinson allowed Josh James to nip in-between the two but Wilkinson
produced another save to keep the game alive. However, Merstham failed
to sustain any pressure on the Chipstead goal until a final opportunity
presented itself in injury time but Ottaway could only head another
Graham corner wide at the far post to complete a disappointing evening
for the Moatsiders. |

Merstham took the lead through new striker Roscoe D’Sane, whose cracking shot left the Casuals keeper for dead. Merstham could have increased their lead on several occasions during the first half but failed to capitalise on their chances. Just after an hour’s play Merstham did manage to double their lead through Daniel Harding who has looked very promising in the lead up to the new season. Casuals managed to grab one back with substitute Kane Sergeant opening their account as Merstham seemed to go off the boil. All in all a promising start to the season. - Johnny Moatside
Match Report:

Merstham successfully opened their account for the new season with a
well-deserved victory against a spirited Corinthian-Casuals. The
Moatsiders put on a sensational display to build a two-goal advantage in
the first hour with strikes from Roscoe D’Sane and Dan Harding before
Kane Sergeant provided the home faithful with an anxious finale with
twenty minute remaining.
Both sides wanted to make an early impact after disappointing finishes
last season but it was the hosts who took control of the contest inside
the opening 15 minutes. D’Sane picked up the loose ball from 25 yards
and arrowed a low right-footed effort past Matt Mann from out of nowhere
to score on his Merstham debut. Casuals spurned a great chance to
equalise five minutes later as Joel Thompson burst through Merstham’s
defence but his shot across goal was brilliantly held by new goalkeeper
David Wilkinson using only his left hand. Merstham begun to dictate
proceedings with Adam Moriarty and Sam Tucknott combining well down the
right wing and the hosts should have extended their lead after creating
three clear cut chances in the space of five minutes. Firstly, Tucknott
skilfully drifted inside from the right and crashed his low left-footed
effort against the inside of the post. Moments later, Harding met
D’Sane’s cross but the striker could not lift the ball over the
advancing Mann. Then the best chance of the three fell to D’Sane, who
was given far too much time and space inside the penalty area to convert
Moriarty’s cross but Mann managed to thwart the striker’s tame effort
from eight yards with his feet. |
